Book Synopsis IUTAM Symposium on Scaling Laws in Ice Mechanics and Ice Dynamics by : J.P. Dempsey
Download or read book IUTAM Symposium on Scaling Laws in Ice Mechanics and Ice Dynamics written by J.P. Dempsey and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-18 with total page 479 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Volume constitutes the Proceedings of the IUTAM Symposium on 'Scaling Laws in Ice Mechanics and Ice Dynamics', held in Fairbanks, Alaska from 13th to 16th of June 2000. Ice mechanics deals with essentially intact ice: in this discipline, descriptions of the motion and deformation of Arctic/ Antarctic and river/lake ice call for the development of physically based constitutive and fracture models over an enormous range in scale: 0.01 m - 10 km. Ice dynamics, on the other hand, deals with the movement of broken ice: descriptions of an aggregate of ice floes call for accurate modeling of momentum transfer through the sea/ice system, again over an enormous range in scale: 1 km (floe scale) - 500 km (basin scale). For ice mechanics, the emphasis on lab-scale (0.01 - 0.5 m) research con trasts with applications at the scale of order 1 km (ice-structure interaction, icebreaking); many important upscaling questions remain to be explored.

Book Synopsis The Story of Offshore Arctic Engineering by : Dan Masterson
Download or read book The Story of Offshore Arctic Engineering written by Dan Masterson and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2018-10-29 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early 1970s, new technology was needed to aid in coal, oil and gas exploration in the High Arctic, in order to see if ice sheets could provide a perfect structural support for roadways, airstrips and drilling platforms housing hundreds of workers. However, little engineering experience was available in this regard. This book uniquely relates the human history and the technical innovations developed in this harsh environment through research, testing, and applying many existing engineering principles to ice structure analysis. It offers essential insights into the history of ice engineering for designers, university educators and postgraduate students. While other studies detail research and testing in the laboratory, this text relates the testing, development, construction and use of ice in real construction conditions.

Book Synopsis Field Techniques for Sea-Ice Research by : Hajo Eicken
Download or read book Field Techniques for Sea-Ice Research written by Hajo Eicken and published by University of Alaska Press. This book was released on 2010-03-15 with total page 590 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As much as one-tenth of the world’s oceans are covered with sea ice, or frozen ocean water, at some point during the annual cycle. Sea ice thus plays an important, often defining, role in the natural environment and the global climate system. This book is a global look at the changes in sea ice and the tools and techniques used to measure and record those changes. The first comprehensive research done on sea-ice field techniques, this volume will be indispensable for the study of northern sea ice and a must-have for scientists in the field of climate change research.

Book Synopsis The Theory and Practice of Hydrodynamics and Vibration by : Subrata Kumar Chakrabarti
Download or read book The Theory and Practice of Hydrodynamics and Vibration written by Subrata Kumar Chakrabarti and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2002 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers the basics of the hydrodynamics and vibration of structures subjected to environmental loads. It describes the interaction of hydrodynamics with the associated vibration of structures, giving simple explanations. Emphasis is placed on the applications of the theory to practical problems. Several case studies are provided to show how the theory outlined in the book is applied in the design of structures. Background material needed for understanding fluid-induced vibrations of structures is given to make the book reasonably self-sufficient. Examples are taken mainly from the novel structures that are of interest today, including ocean and offshore structures and components. Besides being a text for undergraduates, this book can serve as a handy reference for design engineers and consultants involved in the design of structures subjected to dynamics and vibration.
