Book Synopsis Abnormal Hemoglobins in Human Populations by : Frank. B. Livingstone
Download or read book Abnormal Hemoglobins in Human Populations written by Frank. B. Livingstone and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-01-15 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research on abnormal human hemoglobins (protein in blood that carries oxygen), has taught us about the inheritance, biochemistry, and distribution of these traits. This knowledge, coupled with mathematical research using computer models of population genetics, has enabled researchers to marry biological fact and genetic theory. This volume places medical understanding in an evolutionary framework. Using published data on the frequencies of abnormal hemoglobins in the world's populations, Livingston analyzes and interprets these frequencies in the light of world distribution of different forms of diseases such as malaria. He further develops the genetic theory of the evolutionary homeostasis. Livingston discusses the relation of abnormal hemoglobins to endemic malaria and, shows how natural selection pressures explain the known distribution of these traits. Where non-coinciding distributions arise, the book presents other genetic, anthropological, evolutionary, and epidemiological evidence to explain these discrepancies. This classic work remains a useful sourcebook for professors and graduate students of anthropology, genetics, epidemiology, and hematology.

Book Synopsis Bloody Bioethics by : James Stacey Taylor
Download or read book Bloody Bioethics written by James Stacey Taylor and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-03-10 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book to argue in favor of paying people for their blood plasma. It does not merely argue that offering compensation to plasma donors is morally permissible. It argues that prohibiting donor compensation is morally wrong—and that it is morally wrong for all of the reasons that are offered against allowing donor compensation. Opponents of donor compensation claim that it will reduce the amount and quality of plasma obtained, exploit and coerce donors, and undermine social cohesion. James Stacey Taylor argues that empirical evidence demonstrates that compensating plasma donors greatly increases the amount of plasma obtained with no adverse effects on the quality of the pharmaceutical products that are manufactured from it. Prohibiting compensation thus harms patients by reducing their access to the medicines they need. He also argues that it is the prohibition of compensation—not its offer—that exploits donors, fails to respect the moral need to secure a person’s authoritative consent to her treatment, and prevents donors from giving their informed consent to donate. Prohibiting compensation thus not only harms patients but also wrongs donors. Bloody Bioethics will appeal to researchers, advanced students, and medical professionals interested in bioethics, moral philosophy, and the moral limits of markets.
Download or read book Red Cell Preservation written by and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 616 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This bibliography covers the literature of red cell preservation and related subject areas for the period January 1, 1966 through December 31, 1969. In addition, 25 references are included which appeared in 1965. The bibliography is the result of work on a Project which consists of searching the literature, both primary and secondary, and preparing the material for transmittal each month to a number of approved recipients who are interested in blood preservation, particularly in red cell preservation by freezing. Following the response to a questionnaire sent out early during the Project, a rather broad approach to the subject was taken. Abstracts were prepared for those articles which are not accompanied by abstracts with the exception of a few references which are in Japanese only. (Author).
