Book Synopsis Genetic Programming and Data Structures by : W.B. Langdon
Download or read book Genetic Programming and Data Structures written by W.B. Langdon and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1998-04-30 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computers that `program themselves' has long been an aim of computer scientists. Recently genetic programming (GP) has started to show its promise by automatically evolving programs. Indeed in a small number of problems GP has evolved programs whose performance is similar to or even slightly better than that of programs written by people. The main thrust of GP has been to automatically create functions. While these can be of great use they contain no memory and relatively little work has addressed automatic creation of program code including stored data. This issue is the main focus of Genetic Programming, and Data Structures: Genetic Programming + Data Structures = Automatic Programming!. This book is motivated by the observation from software engineering that data abstraction (e.g., via abstract data types) is essential in programs created by human programmers. This book shows that abstract data types can be similarly beneficial to the automatic production of programs using GP. Genetic Programming and Data Structures: Genetic Programming + Data Structures = Automatic Programming! shows how abstract data types (stacks, queues and lists) can be evolved using genetic programming, demonstrates how GP can evolve general programs which solve the nested brackets problem, recognises a Dyck context free language, and implements a simple four function calculator. In these cases, an appropriate data structure is beneficial compared to simple indexed memory. This book also includes a survey of GP, with a critical review of experiments with evolving memory, and reports investigations of real world electrical network maintenance scheduling problems that demonstrate that Genetic Algorithms can find low cost viable solutions to such problems. Genetic Programming and Data Structures: Genetic Programming + Data Structures = Automatic Programming! should be of direct interest to computer scientists doing research on genetic programming, genetic algorithms, data structures, and artificial intelligence. In addition, this book will be of interest to practitioners working in all of these areas and to those interested in automatic programming.

Book excerpt: The Twenty-Second Symposium on Naval Hydrodynamics was held in Washington, D.C., from August 9-14, 1998. It coincided with the 100th anniversary of the David Taylor Model Basin. This international symposium was organized jointly by the Office of Naval Research (Mechanics and Energy Conversion S&T Division), the National Research Council (Naval Studies Board), and the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division (David Taylor Model Basin). This biennial symposium promotes the technical exchange of naval research developments of common interest to all the countries of the world. The forum encourages both formal and informal discussion of the presented papers, and the occasion provides an opportunity for direct communication between international peers.

Book Synopsis Network Processor Design by : Mark A. Franklin
Download or read book Network Processor Design written by Mark A. Franklin and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2005-03-11 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The past few years have seen significant change in the landscape of high-end network processing. In response to the formidable challenges facing this emerging field, the editors of this series set out to survey the latest research and practices in the design, programming, and use of network processors. Through chapters on hardware, software, performance and modeling, Network Processor Design illustrates the potential for new NP applications, helping to lay a theoretical foundation for the architecture, evaluation, and programming of networking processors. Like Volume 2 of the series, Volume 3 further shifts the focus from achieving higher levels of packet processing performance to addressing other critical factors such as ease of programming, application developments, power, and performance prediction. In addition, Volume 3 emphasizes forward-looking, leading-edge research in the areas of architecture, tools and techniques, and applications such as high-speed intrusion detection and prevention system design, and the implementation of new interconnect standards. - Investigates current applications of network processor technology at Intel; Infineon Technologies; and NetModule - Presents current research in network processor design in three distinct areas: - Architecture at Washington University, St. Louis; Oregon Health and Science University; University of Georgia; and North Carolina State University. - Tools and Techniques at University of Texas, Austin; Academy of Sciences, China; University of Paderborn, Germany; and University of Massachusetts, Amherst. - Applications at University of California, Berkeley; Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Spain; ETH Zurich, Switzerland; Georgia Institute of Technology; Vrije Universiteit, the Netherlands; and Universiteit Leiden, the Netherlands.
Book Synopsis Virtual Instruction by : Carine M. Feyten
Download or read book Virtual Instruction written by Carine M. Feyten and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 1999-09-15 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the world, schools, universities, and industry have begun to use virtual instruction to expand their outreach to learners and to promote collaboration and exchange among educators. As these virtual communities encompass the globe, questions regarding the nature of teaching learning, and communicating in a technology-embedded, multicultural, and border-free environment have arisen. The essays in this book clarify predominant theoretical issues that pertain to this new form of computer-mediated, interactive distance learning and offer practical suggestions for implementing virtual instruction programs. Addressing a variety of instructional technologies (e.g., web-based instruction, videoconferencing), the book examines virtual instruction from different perspectives, including economics, sociology, communication, and learning theory. Invaluable to educators and students of teacher education, instructional design, technology, and communication, the book will appeal to anyone involved in or w
Book Synopsis Multimedia and Virtual Reality by : Alistair Sutcliffe
Download or read book Multimedia and Virtual Reality written by Alistair Sutcliffe and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2003-02-26 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is primarily a summary of research done over 10 years in multimedia and virtual reality, which fits within a wider interest of exploiting psychological theory to improve the process of designing interactive systems. The subject matter lies firmly within the field of HCI, with some cross-referencing to software engineering. Extending Sutcliffe's views on the design process to more complex interfaces that have evolved in recent years, this book: *introduces the background to multisensory user interfaces and surveys the design issues and previous HCI research in these areas; *explains the basic psychology for design of multisensory user interfaces, including the Interactive Cognitive Subsystems cognitive model; *describes elaborations of Norman's models of action for multimedia and VR, relates these models to the ICS cognitive model, and explains how the models can be applied to predict the design features necessary for successful interaction; *provides a design process from requirements, user and domain analysis, to design of representation in media or virtual worlds and facilities for user interaction therein; *covers usability evaluation for multisensory interfaces by extending existing well-known HCI approaches of heuristic evaluation and observational usability testing; and *presents two special application areas for multisensory interfaces: educational applications and virtual prototyping for design refinement.
