Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the 8th European Conference on Object-Oriented Programming (ECCOP '94), held in Bologna, Italy in July 1994. ECOOP is the premier European event on object-oriented programming and technology. The 25 full refereed papers presented in the volume were selected from 161 submissions; they are grouped in sessions on class design, concurrency, patterns, declarative programming, implementation, specification, dispatching, and experience. Together with the keynote speech "Beyond Objects" by Luc Steels (Brussels) and the invited paper "Putting Objects to Work" by Norbert A. Streitz (GMD-IPSI, Darmstadt) they offer an exciting perspective on object-oriented programming research and applications.

Book Synopsis ECOOP '93 - Object-Oriented Programming by : Oscar M. Nierstrasz
Download or read book ECOOP '93 - Object-Oriented Programming written by Oscar M. Nierstrasz and published by Springer. This book was released on 2003-05-16 with total page 541 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is now more than twenty-five years since object-oriented programming was “inve- ed” (actually, more than thirty years since work on Simula started), but, by all accounts, it would appear as if object-oriented technology has only been “discovered” in the past ten years! When the first European Conference on Object-Oriented Programming was held in Paris in 1987, I think it was generally assumed that Object-Oriented Progr- ming, like Structured Programming, would quickly enter the vernacular, and that a c- ference on the subject would rapidly become superfluous. On the contrary, the range and impact of object-oriented approaches and methods continues to expand, and, - spite the inevitable oversell and hype, object-oriented technology has reached a level of scientific maturity that few could have foreseen ten years ago. Object-oriented technology also cuts across scientific cultural boundaries like p- haps no other field of computer science, as object-oriented concepts can be applied to virtually all the other areas and affect virtually all aspects of the software life cycle. (So, in retrospect, emphasizing just Programming in the name of the conference was perhaps somewhat short-sighted, but at least the acronym is pronounceable and easy to rem- ber!) This year’s ECOOP attracted 146 submissions from around the world - making the selection process even tougher than usual. The selected papers range in topic from programming language and database issues to analysis and design and reuse, and from experience reports to theoretical contributions.

Book Synopsis Advances in Object-Oriented Metalevel Architectures and Reflection by : Christoph Zimmermann
Download or read book Advances in Object-Oriented Metalevel Architectures and Reflection written by Christoph Zimmermann and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1996-06-20 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The importance of object-oriented metalevel architectures, metaobjects, and reflection continues to grow in computer science. This applies to traditional fields such as artificial intelligence and object-oriented programming languages as well as to parallel processing and operating systems. Advances in Object-Oriented Metalevel Architectures and Reflection presents some of the standard-setting research in this field. The book is structured with and introductory chapter that lays the necessary foundation for readers new to the field. The next five parts discuss operating systems, artificial intelligence, languages, concurrent objects, and application support. Each part itself has a brief introduction that presents the basics for understanding the particular topic.

Book Synopsis Multimedia and Imaging Databases by : Setrag Khoshafian
Download or read book Multimedia and Imaging Databases written by Setrag Khoshafian and published by Morgan Kaufmann. This book was released on 1996 with total page 632 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Affordable and mainstream manipulation of multimedia data types will lead to tremendous growth in imaging and multimedia data in general computing environments. Multimedia and imaging applications can now provide benefits to common business applications by integrating voice, sound, images, animation and digitized video. Ultimately, it will be possible to convert all information that is currently stored on paper, video and film into a digitized environment. This will allow users to organize, search and route multimedia objects over local and wide area networks in real time. The authors' introductory level presentation of this new class of data types supplies the database technology required for effective manipulation and storage. Multimedia and database experts, Khoshafian and Baker aptly illustrate the ability of multimedia database systems to concurrently share, access, and query large collections of multimedia information. They introduce the elemental concepts of object and relational databases and then apply them to multimedia and imaging databases. Fundamental database topics discussed include querying, transaction support, recovery, security, and storage. This book provides information essential to the incorporation of multimedia databases that will improve the quantity and quality of information manipulated by computer users in many areas including medicine, computer aided design, and information retrieval systems.
Book Synopsis Parallel Computer Architectures by : Arndt Bode
Download or read book Parallel Computer Architectures written by Arndt Bode and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-12-11 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Parallel computer architectures are now going to real applications! This fact is demonstrated by the large number of application areas covered in this book (see section on applications of parallel computer architectures). The applications range from image analysis to quantum mechanics and data bases. Still, the use of parallel architectures poses serious problems and requires the development of new techniques and tools. This book is a collection of best papers presented at the first workshop on two major research activities at the Universitiit Erlangen-Niirnberg and Technis che Universitiit Miinchen. At both universities, more than 100 researchers are working in the field of multiprocessor systems and network configurations and methods and tools for parallel systems. Indeed, the German Science Founda tion (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft) has been sponsoring the projects under grant numbers SFB 182 and SFB 342. Research grants in the form of a Sonder forschungsbereich are given to selected German Universities in portions of three years following a thoroughful reviewing process. The overall duration of such a research grant is restricted to 12 years. The initiative at Erlangen-Niirnberg was started in 1987 and has been headed since this time by Prof. Dr. H. Wedekind. Work at TU-Miinchen began in 1990, head of this initiative is Prof. Dr. A. Bode. The authors of this book are grateful to the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft for its continuing support in the field of research on parallel processing. The first section of the book is devoted to hardware aspects of parallel systems.

Book Synopsis Reflections on Programming Systems by : Liesbeth De Mol
Download or read book Reflections on Programming Systems written by Liesbeth De Mol and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-01-10 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a historical and philosophical analysis of programming systems, intended as large computational systems like, for instance, operating systems, programmed to control processes. The introduction to the volume emphasizes the contemporary need of providing a foundational analysis of such systems, rooted in a broader historical and philosophical discussion. The different chapters are grouped around three major themes. The first concerns the early history of large systems developed against the background of issues related to the growing semantic gap between hardware and code. The second revisits the fundamental issue of complexity of large systems, dealt with by the use of formal methods and the development of `grand designs’ like Unix. Finally, a third part considers several issues related to programming systems in the real world, including chapters on aesthetical, ethical and political issues. This book will interest researchers from a diversity of backgrounds. It will appeal to historians, philosophers, as well as logicians and computer scientists who want to engage with topics relevant to the history and philosophy of programming and more specifically the role of programming systems in the foundations of computing.
