Book excerpt: The Pacific Rim International Conference on Artificial Intelligence (PRICAI) is a biennial international event which focuses on Artificial Intelligence (AI) theories and technologies, and their applications which are of social and economic importance for countries in the Pacific Rim region. Seven earlier conferences were held in: Nagoya, Japan (1990); Seoul, Korea (1992); Beijing, China (1994); Cairns, Australia (1996); Singapore (1998); Melbourne, Australia (2000); and Tokyo, Japan (2002). PRICAI 2004 was the eigth in the series and was held in Auckland, New Zealand in August 2004. PRICAI 2004 had attracted a historical record number of submissions, a total of 356 papers. After careful reviews by at least two international Program Committee members or referees, 94 papers were accepted as full papers (27%) and 54 papers (15%) were accepted as posters. Authors of accepted papers came from 27 countries. This volume of the proceedings contains all the 94 full papers but only a 2-page - tended abstract of each of the accepted posters. The full papers were categorized into four sections, namely: AI foundations, computational intelligence, AI technologies and systems, and AI specific application areas. Among the papers submitted, we found “Agent Technology” to be the area having the most papers submitted. This was followed by “Evolutionary Computing”, “Computational Learning”, and “Image Processing”.

Book Synopsis Model-Checking Based Data Retrieval by : Elisa Quintarelli
Download or read book Model-Checking Based Data Retrieval written by Elisa Quintarelli and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2004-02-06 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is devoted to the study of the semantics and assuring the efficient execution of database query languages, where the database contains semistructured and time-varying information. The primary focus of the work presented is the definition of an effective graph-based approach to the formalization of query languages for semistructured and temporal information; as a result, query execution can be reduced to searching the database for subgraphs that are similar to the given query graph and thus can be supported through bisimualtion. By integrating and refining graph-based methods and bisimulation, the author develops a powerful and flexible paradigm. The second research challenge solved is that of efficient implementation by modeling graphical queries as formulas in modal logic and interpreting database instance graphs as Kripke transition systems.

Book Synopsis Secure Data Science by : Bhavani Thuraisingham
Download or read book Secure Data Science written by Bhavani Thuraisingham and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2022-04-27 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Secure data science, which integrates cyber security and data science, is becoming one of the critical areas in both cyber security and data science. This is because the novel data science techniques being developed have applications in solving such cyber security problems as intrusion detection, malware analysis, and insider threat detection. However, the data science techniques being applied not only for cyber security but also for every application area—including healthcare, finance, manufacturing, and marketing—could be attacked by malware. Furthermore, due to the power of data science, it is now possible to infer highly private and sensitive information from public data, which could result in the violation of individual privacy. This is the first such book that provides a comprehensive overview of integrating both cyber security and data science and discusses both theory and practice in secure data science. After an overview of security and privacy for big data services as well as cloud computing, this book describes applications of data science for cyber security applications. It also discusses such applications of data science as malware analysis and insider threat detection. Then this book addresses trends in adversarial machine learning and provides solutions to the attacks on the data science techniques. In particular, it discusses some emerging trends in carrying out trustworthy analytics so that the analytics techniques can be secured against malicious attacks. Then it focuses on the privacy threats due to the collection of massive amounts of data and potential solutions. Following a discussion on the integration of services computing, including cloud-based services for secure data science, it looks at applications of secure data science to information sharing and social media. This book is a useful resource for researchers, software developers, educators, and managers who want to understand both the high level concepts and the technical details on the design and implementation of secure data science-based systems. It can also be used as a reference book for a graduate course in secure data science. Furthermore, this book provides numerous references that would be helpful for the reader to get more details about secure data science.
Book Synopsis Periodic Pattern Mining by : R. Uday Kiran
Download or read book Periodic Pattern Mining written by R. Uday Kiran and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-10-29 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an introduction to the field of periodic pattern mining, reviews state-of-the-art techniques, discusses recent advances, and reviews open-source software. Periodic pattern mining is a popular and emerging research area in the field of data mining. It involves discovering all regularly occurring patterns in temporal databases. One of the major applications of periodic pattern mining is the analysis of customer transaction databases to discover sets of items that have been regularly purchased by customers. Discovering such patterns has several implications for understanding the behavior of customers. Since the first work on periodic pattern mining, numerous studies have been published and great advances have been made in this field. The book consists of three main parts: introduction, algorithms, and applications. The first chapter is an introduction to pattern mining and periodic pattern mining. The concepts of periodicity, periodic support, search space exploration techniques, and pruning strategies are discussed. The main types of algorithms are also presented such as periodic-frequent pattern growth, partial periodic pattern-growth, and periodic high-utility itemset mining algorithm. Challenges and research opportunities are reviewed. The chapters that follow present state-of-the-art techniques for discovering periodic patterns in (1) transactional databases, (2) temporal databases, (3) quantitative temporal databases, and (4) big data. Then, the theory on concise representations of periodic patterns is presented, as well as hiding sensitive information using privacy-preserving data mining techniques. The book concludes with several applications of periodic pattern mining, including applications in air pollution data analytics, accident data analytics, and traffic congestion analytics.

The main objective of this conference was to discuss problems and solutions in all areas, to identify new issues, to shape future directions of research, and to help users apply various advanced computational techniques. The event harvested recent developments in com- tationalgridsandnextgenerationcomputingsystems, tools, advancednumerical methods, data-driven systems, and novel application ?elds, such as complex - stems, ?nance, econo-physics and population evolution.
Book Synopsis Operations Research Proceedings 2008 by : Bernhard Fleischmann
Download or read book Operations Research Proceedings 2008 written by Bernhard Fleischmann and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-08-04 with total page 586 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The international conference \Operations Research 2008", the annual meeting of the German Operations Research Society (GOR), was held at the University of Augsburg on September 3-5, 2008. About 580 p- ticipants from more than 30 countries presented and listened to nearly 400 talks on a broad range of Operations Research. The general subject \Operations Research and Global Business" str- ses the important role of Operations Research in improving decisions in the increasingly complex business processes in a global environment. The plenary speakers Morris A. Cohen (Wharton School) and Bernd Liepert (Executive Board of KUKA Robotics) addressed this subject. Moreover, one of the founders of Operations Research, Saul Gass (U- versity of Maryland), gave the opening speech on the early history of Operations Research. This volume contains 93 papers presented at the conference, selected by the program committee and the section chairs, forming a representative sample of the various subjects dealt with at Operations Research 2008. The volume follows the structure of the conference, with 12 sections, grouped into six \Fields of Applications" and six \Fields of Methods and Theory". This structure in no way means a separation of theory and application, which would be detrimental in Operations Research, but displays the large spectrum of aspects in the focus of the papers. Of course, most papers present theory, methods and applications together.
