Download or read book Ecological Silviculture written by Brian J. Palik and published by Waveland Press. This book was released on 2020-05-15 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Classical silviculture has often emphasized timber models, fundamentally based in production agriculture. This books presents silvicultural methods based in natural forest models—models that emulate natural disturbances and development processes, sustain biological legacies, and allow time to take its course in shaping stands. These methods, dubbed “ecological forestry,” have been successfully implemented by foresters for decades managing a wide variety of forestlands. Ecological silvicultural strategies protect threatened and rare species, sustain biological diversity, and provide habitat for game and non-game species, all while providing timber in profitable ways.
Book Synopsis Multiaged Silviculture by : Kevin O'Hara
Download or read book Multiaged Silviculture written by Kevin O'Hara and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2014-08-28 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the latest scientific and management information on multiaged silviculture, an emerging strategy for managing forestry systems worldwide. Over recent decades, forest science and management have tended to emphasize plantation silviculture. Whilst this clearly meets our wood production needs, many of the world's forests need to be managed far less intensively and more flexibly in order to maintain their natural ecosystem functions together with the values inherent in those processes. Developing multiaged management strategies for these complex forest ecosystems represents a global challenge to successfully integrate available science with sustainable management practices. Multiaged Silviculture covers the ecology and dynamics of multiaged stands, the management operations associated with regeneration, tending, and stocking control, and the implications of this strategy on production, genetic diversity, and stand health. It is primarily aimed at graduate level students and researchers in the fields of forestry and silviculture, but will also be of relevance and use to all professional foresters and silviculturists.

Book Synopsis Educating the Sustainability Leaders of the Future by : Walter Leal Filho
Download or read book Educating the Sustainability Leaders of the Future written by Walter Leal Filho and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-03-10 with total page 675 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on 'educating the sustainability leaders of the future' and will contribute to the further development of this fast-growing field. As the title suggests, it presents practical experiences related to education, research and extension, the so-called third mission, whereby universities conduct outreach to society as a whole (e.g. to local communities, organisations, industry, and other groups) with the aim of documenting such experiences and making them available to a wide audience. This book is produced by the European School of Sustainability Science and Research (ESSSR), through the Inter-University Sustainable Development Research Programme (IUSDRP) and contains inputs from authors from across all geographical regions. It gives a special emphasis to the participation of future generations on sustainability efforts. The book also discusses examples of initiatives coordinated by universities but involving civil society, the private sector, and public sector (including local, national, and intergovernmental bodies). In particular, it describes practical experiences, partnerships, networks, and training schemes for building capacity aimed at fostering the cause of sustainable development at institutions of higher education. Thanks to its design and the contributions by experts from various areas, it provides a welcome contribution to the literature on sustainable development, and it inspires further works in this field.

Book Synopsis Long-term Assessment of Financial Maturity, Diameter-limit Selection in the Central Appalachians by : Thomas M. Schuler
Download or read book Long-term Assessment of Financial Maturity, Diameter-limit Selection in the Central Appalachians written by Thomas M. Schuler and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Financial maturity, diameter-limit (FMDL) selection was proposed more than three decades ago as a replacement for diameter-limit cutting. FMDL incorporates financial maturity guidelines for individual trees, high-priority removal of poor-quality trees, and guidelines for residual basal area. We provide the first long-term assessment of this practice after more than three decades of implementation. FMDL selection is evaluated in terms periodic yield of merchantable board feet, residual basal area, butt-log quality, and species composition. Recommendations for lowering the minimum residual basal area are presented. Management implications regarding controlling species composition are discussed.
