Book Synopsis College and the Future by : Richard Rice
Download or read book College and the Future written by Richard Rice and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from College and the Future: Essays for the Undergraduate on Problems of Character and Intellect "There is no enlargement, unless there be a comparison of ideas one with another, as they come before the mind, and a systematizing of them. We feel our minds to be growing and expanding then, when we not only learn, but refer what we learn to what we know already." - Cardinal Newman. The object of this volume is to present a set of essays which form a close sequence of ideas, a little philosophy, about the present interests and the future problems of the undergraduate. It is hoped that he may find in them a series of facts and opinions that will be naturally productive of further opinions and investigation on his part. The chief intention of the book is to be gathered from the order of the essays, which enables the writer of themes to proceed from one discussion to another logically resulting discussion, accumulating thought instead of "writing himself out" in rather scattered and casual efforts. Owing to the variety of the materials, which illustrate many kinds of writing, he has an unusual chance to gain true impressions of manner and method, because he can here see what different styles do for the drift of the same general argument. The essays make chapters of a book that may be read from cover to cover as a unit. A brief commentary will serve here better than elsewhere to describe some of its practical uses as a text for courses in writing. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Empire and the Century: A Series of Essays Imperial Problems and Possibilities by Various Writers IF there is any truth in Schiller's saying, Men rise by their higher purposes, ' it is as applicable to nations as to individuals. In no period in history has it fallen to the lot of mankind to Witness a greater Empire than the British Empire of to-day, and it follows as a logical conclusion that the administration of such an Empire must needs imply a heavy weight of responsibility. Are we conscious Of these responsibilities, and is the nation rising to meet them? Surely, on no occasion is the question Of its future more Vital, is, in fact, the duty of reflection and examination more in keeping With national rejoicing, than on the centenary Of the great naval battle Which determined the future Of the Empire and laid the foundations of modern Europe, To serious men Trafalgar should be considered in the light of a national sacrament. The lessons of the past are weighed, our vows for the future renewed. Re Jolcmg must be combined with national self-examina tion, and the conditions of our success in the past used as a guide to our conduct in the future. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Future Is Ours The Mississippi River and the myriad streams which con tribute to its system, draining two thirds of the continental United States, is the most important single fact in our national life. The Great Valley is not only the largest habitable river basin in the temperate zone but it has been settled by a mix ture of vigorous peoples in a high stage of civilization, peoples with ideas and institutions, traditions and habits, developed under entirely different geographical conditions. The result is perhaps the sharpest geo - political tension in recorded his tory. Since the epoch when the advance of the glaciers forced men to tame fire as a condition for their survival, there has been nothing like it. We must invent the political and social equivalent of fire if we are to survive. For the numerous Gov ernment studies and reports which deal with the problems of the Great Valley can be summarized into two challenging statements. Book Synopsis Industrial Colonies and Village Settlements for the Consumptive (Classic Reprint) by : German Woodhead
Download or read book Industrial Colonies and Village Settlements for the Consumptive (Classic Reprint) written by German Woodhead and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 2018-01-19 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Industrial Colonies and Village Settlements for the Consumptive Symonds, and we together examined the patients, sampled the climate and other conditions, and argued with Unger and Ruedi. Then for the second time came Hope; more solid Hope. Given a fairly early case, and three years, and recovery was in the offing. And so we went on cheerfully with Davos. But Davos was not for every one; nor was every case an early 'one. Then came the discovery that lower altitudes would do if certain conditions were obtained; and so arose the great sanatorium movement. But slowly we found that patients could not spend their lives in sanatoriums; and one day on making my way up to one of them in England, I met on the way patient after patient, slouching along, bored to death with themselves and with each other; and even worse in morale than in body. Better discipline and better notions of thera peutics mended some of that; still I could not forget those listless saunterers, and it became evident to some of us, however unwillingly, that Hope was drooping again. The sanatorium was doing a great educative work no doubt; but at the end of its four or six months - what then? To send the patient away with recommendations about light jobs, and a regime, was almost a mockery or quite. What about the wage, and the family to be supported? The next lesson was brought home to me by a visit with other commissioners to certain cities, concerning some such problems. Before me now I see a gaunt hollow-eyed man, coughing, and leaning against the wall as he tried to talk to us, saying that his mates when he came out of the sanatorium - good fellows as they were - had bought him a milk that he might creep round, and earn a bit. The brave wife, shawl on head and mill apron on, had just come from the factory, and apologised for the dirty house - as well she might. The poor thing was working all day at the factory to keep the wolf from the door. All being dragged down together into the pit! What is the value of a good house, or a clean house, if no wages! What is there for the children? And what is to stop the infection! Who then would have the imagination, the initiative, the business capacity, to lift this burden, like lifting a world?
