Book excerpt: Based on a hugely successful US model, the Seven Core Issues in Adoption is the first conceptual framework of its kind to offer a unifying lens that was inclusive of all individuals touched by the adoption experience. The Seven Core Issues are Loss, Rejection, Shame/Guilt, Grief, Identity, Intimacy, and Mastery/Control. The book expands the model to be inclusive of adoption and all forms of permanency: adoption, foster care, kinship care, donor insemination and surrogacy. Attachment and trauma are integrated with the Seven Core Issues model to address and normalize the additional tasks individuals and families will encounter. The book views the Seven Core Issues from a range of perspectives including: multi-racial, LGBTQ, Hispanic, Asian, Native American, African-American, International, openness, search and reunion, and others. This essential guide introduces each Core Issue, its impact on individuals, offering techniques for growth and healing.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Problems and Procedures in Adoption It was intended not to evaluate the success or failure of individual adoptions insofar as the children adopted or the persons adopting them were concerned but to Show the extent to which the safeguards for their protection set up by legislation or through administration had been effective. Another aim was to obtain factual material to Show who the children were who were being adopted, how they found their way into the homes of those petitioning for their adeption, and what differences there were in standards, practices, and volume in the several States in which the study was conducted. Although there has been general acceptance of the fact that adop tions of children born out of wedlock are frequent, no body of material was available showing the relationship between illegitimacy and adoption in those States having a social program for the unmarried mother and those without it. Former studies had for the most part been confined to a single city or county with no comparable data from other areas. It was expected that the study not only would provide information on the administration of existing laws but would furnish a basis for evaluating these laws and for determining which aspects of the legis lation now in operation could safely be recommended to other States contemplating changes in their adoption laws. It covers the four types of adoptions (independent, agency, stepparent and intercountry), and briefly discusses those aspects of guardianship and juvenile dependency law which relate to adoptions. This book explores the "best interests of the child" and the home study process. It also seeks to explain "consent," whose consent must be obtained, and whether consent may be revoked. The book further describes the roles of attorneys, adoption service providers, adoption facilitators, adoption agencies and governmental agencies. It seeks to clarify the rights of the adoptive parents, the child, and of third parties, whether or not a Postadoption Contact Agreement is in place. This text discusses interstate conflicts and how laws such as the Uniform Child Custody Jurisdiction and Enforcement Act operate. It also covers the new federal statutes and regulations which implement the Hague Convention on Intercountry Adoption."--Back cover.
