Book Synopsis Small Divisor Problem in the Theory of Three-Dimensional Water Gravity Waves by : Grard Iooss
Download or read book Small Divisor Problem in the Theory of Three-Dimensional Water Gravity Waves written by Grard Iooss and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2009-06-05 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors consider doubly-periodic travelling waves at the surface of an infinitely deep perfect fluid, only subjected to gravity $g$ and resulting from the nonlinear interaction of two simply periodic travelling waves making an angle $2\theta$ between them. Denoting by $\mu =gL/c^{2}$ the dimensionless bifurcation parameter ( $L$ is the wave length along the direction of the travelling wave and $c$ is the velocity of the wave), bifurcation occurs for $\mu = \cos \theta$. For non-resonant cases, we first give a large family of formal three-dimensional gravity travelling waves, in the form of an expansion in powers of the amplitudes of two basic travelling waves. ``Diamond waves'' are a particular case of such waves, when they are symmetric with respect to the direction of propagation. The main object of the paper is the proof of existence of such symmetric waves having the above mentioned asymptotic expansion. Due to the occurence of small divisors, the main difficulty is the inversion of the linearized operator at a non trivial point, for applying the Nash Moser theorem. This operator is the sum of a second order differentiation along a certain direction, and an integro-differential operator of first order, both depending periodically of coordinates. It is shown that for almost all angles $\theta$, the 3-dimensional travelling waves bifurcate for a set of ``good'' values of the bifurcation parameter having asymptotically a full measure near the bifurcation curve in the parameter plane $(\theta,\mu ).$
Book Synopsis Nonlinear Oscillations of Hamiltonian PDEs by : Massimiliano Berti
Download or read book Nonlinear Oscillations of Hamiltonian PDEs written by Massimiliano Berti and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-10-01 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many partial differential equations (PDEs) that arise in physics can be viewed as infinite-dimensional Hamiltonian systems. This monograph presents recent existence results of nonlinear oscillations of Hamiltonian PDEs, particularly of periodic solutions for completely resonant nonlinear wave equations. The text serves as an introduction to research in this fascinating and rapidly growing field. Graduate students and researchers interested in variational techniques and nonlinear analysis applied to Hamiltonian PDEs will find inspiration in the book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The papers in this volume reflect a broad spectrum of current research activities on the theory and applications of nonlinear dynamics and evolution equations. They are based on lectures given during the International Conference on Nonlinear Dynamics and Evolution Equations at Memorial University of Newfoundland, St. John's, NL, Canada, July 6-10, 2004. This volume contains thirteen invited and refereed papers. Nine of these are survey papers, introducing the reader to, anddescribing the current state of the art in major areas of dynamical systems, ordinary, functional and partial differential equations, and applications of such equations in the mathematical modelling of various biological and physical phenomena. These papers are complemented by four research papers thatexamine particular problems in the theory and applications of dynamical systems. Information for our distributors: Titles in this series are copublished with the Fields Institute for Research in Mathematical Sciences (Toronto, Ontario, Canada).

Book Synopsis Perspectives in Nonlinear Partial Differential Equations by : Henri Berestycki
Download or read book Perspectives in Nonlinear Partial Differential Equations written by Henri Berestycki and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2007 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In celebration of Haim Brezis's 60th birthday, a conference was held at the Ecole Polytechnique in Paris, with a program testifying to Brezis's wide-ranging influence on nonlinear analysis and partial differential equations. The articles in this volume are primarily from that conference. They present a rare view of the state of the art of many aspects of nonlinear PDEs, as well as describe new directions that are being opened up in this field. The articles, written by mathematicians at the center of current developments, provide somewhat more personal views of the important developments and challenges.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text treats the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation with periodic boundary conditions. This equation models waves in homogeneous, weakly nonlinear and weakly dispersive media in general. For the first time, these important results are comprehensively covered in book form, authored by internationally renowned experts in the field.

Book Synopsis Kam Story, The: A Friendly Introduction To The Content, History, And Significance Of Classical Kolmogorov-arnold-moser Theory by : H Scott Dumas
Download or read book Kam Story, The: A Friendly Introduction To The Content, History, And Significance Of Classical Kolmogorov-arnold-moser Theory written by H Scott Dumas and published by World Scientific Publishing Company. This book was released on 2014-02-28 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a semi-popular mathematics book aimed at a broad readership of mathematically literate scientists, especially mathematicians and physicists who are not experts in classical mechanics or KAM theory, and scientific-minded readers. Parts of the book should also appeal to less mathematically trained readers with an interest in the history or philosophy of science. The scope of the book is broad: it not only describes KAM theory in some detail, but also presents its historical context (thus showing why it was a “breakthrough”). Also discussed are applications of KAM theory (especially to celestial mechanics and statistical mechanics) and the parts of mathematics and physics in which KAM theory resides (dynamical systems, classical mechanics, and Hamiltonian perturbation theory).Although a number of sources on KAM theory are now available for experts, this book attempts to fill a long-standing gap at a more descriptive level. It stands out very clearly from existing publications on KAM theory because it leads the reader through an accessible account of the theory and places it in its proper context in mathematics, physics, and the history of science.
