Quark models generally predict that about 60% of the proton's spin should be carried by the spin of the quarks inside, whereas high energy scattering experiments have shown that the quark spin contribution is small - only about 30%. This result has been the underlying motivation for about 1000 theoretical papers and a global program of dedicated spin experiments at BNL, CERN, DESY and Jefferson Laboratory to map the individual quark and gluon angular momentum contributions to the proton's spin, which are now yielding exciting results. This book gives an overview of the present status of the field: what is new in the data and what can be expected in the next few years. The emphasis is on the main physical ideas and the interpretation of spin data. Book excerpt: Understanding the structure of the proton is an ongoing effort in the particle physics community. Existing in the region of nonperturbative QCD, the various models for proton structure must be informed and constrained by experimental data. In 2009, the STAR experiment at Brookhaven National Lab recorded over 12 pb-1 of data from polarized p+p collisions at 500 GeV center-of-mass energy provided by the RHIC accelerator. This has offered a first look at the spin-dependent production of W+(-) bosons, and hence at the spin-flavor structure of the proton, where the main production mode is through d+u (u+d) annihilation. Using STAR's large Time Projection Chamber and its wide-acceptance electromagnetic calorimeters, it is possible to identify the e+ + v (e- + v) decay mode of the W bosons produced. This thesis presents the first STAR measurement of charge-separated W production, both the pseudorapidity-dependent ratio and the longitudinal single-spin asymmetry. These results show good agreement with theoretical expectations, validating the methods used and paving the way for the analysis of larger datasets that will be available soon. In the near future the range of this measurement will be augmented with the Forward GEM Tracker. A discussion of the design and implementation of this upgrade is also included, along with projections for its impact.

Book excerpt: The Spin Asymmetries of the Nucleon Experiment investigated the spin structure of the proton via inclusive electron scattering at the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility at Jefferson Laboratory in Newport News, VA. A double-polarization measurement of polarized asymmetries was performed using the University of Virginia solid polarized ammonia target with target polarization aligned longitudinal and near transverse to the electron beam, allowing the extraction of the spin asymmetries A1 and A2, and spin structure functions g1 and g2. Polarized electrons of energies of 4.7 and 5.9 GeV were scattered to be viewed by a novel, non-magnetic array of detectors observing a four-momentum transfer range of 2 to 6 GeV2. This document addresses the extraction of the spin asymmetries and spin structure functions, with a focus on spin structure function g2, which we have measured as a function of x and W in four Q2 bins.

Book excerpt: This book presents two analyses, the first of which involves the search for a new heavy charged gauge boson, a so-called W' boson. This new gauge boson is predicted by some theories extending the Standard Model gauge group to solve some of its conceptual problems. Decays of the W' boson in final states with a lepton (l± = e± , μ±) and the corresponding (anti-)neutrino are considered. Data collected by the ATLAS experiment in 2015 at a center of mass energy of √s =13 TeV is used for the analysis. In turn, the second analysis presents a measurement of the double-differential cross section of the process pp->Z/gamma^* + X -> l^+l^- + X, including a gamma gamma induced contribution, at a center of mass energy of sqrt{s} = 8 TeV. The measurement is performed in an invariant mass region of 116 GeV to 1500 GeV as a function of invariant mass and absolute rapidity of the l^+l^-- pair, and as a function of invariant mass and pseudorapidity separation of the l^+l^-- pair. The data analyzed was recorded by the ATLAS experiment in 2012 and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 20.3/fb. It is expected that the measured cross sections are sensitive to the PDFs at very high values of the Bjorken-x scaling variable, and to the photon structure of the proton.

Rather the particle is a bound state of three valence quarks and the QCD vacuum that condenses around them, its properties an amalgamation of those underlying degrees of freedom. Naive expectations presume that contributions from the valence quarks dominate these properties, but the deep inelastic scattering (DIS) experiments which first investigated the proton structure in detail revealed the importance of the vacuum. In particular, polarized DIS measurements uncovered a surprisingly inadequate quark polarization, necessitating significant contributions to the proton spin from elsewhere. The total spin of the gluon field confining the quarks is one possibility, but a contribution only weakly constrained by the electromagnetic probes of DIS. An observable far more sensitive to contributions from the gluon field can be found in the collision of two polarized protons. By correlating the incident proton helicities with final-states originating from an initial-state gluon, the double-helicity asymmetry directly probes the underlying gluon polarization and provides much stronger experimental constraints. Asymmetries measured with hadronic final-states have already improved the understanding of the proton spin structure significantly, but with accumulating statistics these measurements will eventually be limited by systematic uncertainties. Although direct photons are rare in the hadronic environment, the simplicity of the resulting asymmetry ultimately promises a more precise probe of the gluon polarization. Located at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC), the only facility in the world capable of accelerating and colliding polarized proton beams, the Solenoidal Tracker at RHIC (STAR) provides the large acceptance electromagnetic calorimetry and charged particle tracking critical for measuring direct photons and, subsequently, their asymmetry. Utilizing data from the 2009 running period with intricate simulation, state-of-the-art statistical methods have been developed to tease out the rare photon signal from an overwhelming hadronic background to enable the first direct photon measurements at STAR. This thesis details the construction of the unpolarized cross section and an initial double-helicity asymmetry, proving the feasibility of the direct photon program at the experiment.

Book excerpt: The transversity distribution, $h_1(x)$, of a transversely polarized proton describes the probability of partons with polarization parallel to the parent proton, carrying a momentum fraction $x$ of the parent proton. This distribution is fundamental for our understanding of the proton spin structure but still very much unknown for values of $x$ larger than about 0.15. We study transversely spin-polarized proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=200$ GeV from STAR, because polarized p+p collisions at RHIC can access this $x$ region and, with a higher scale and transverse momentum, probe a different kinematic regime than SIDIS. We find sizable spin asymmetries in di-hadron correlations, which can be used to directly probe the transversity distribution of quarks inside protons because they arise from a transversely spin polarized quark fragmenting into two hadrons by the Interference Fragmentation Function.

Book excerpt: Studies on the spin structure of the proton have been an active area of research; after the EMC experiment and subsequent experiments found that only about 30% of the total proton spin is carried by quark spins. The Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) is the world's first and only polarized proton collider. The Solenoidal Tracker At RHIC (STAR) has full azimuthal acceptance and is ideally suited to advance studies of the proton spin. The longitudinal spin transfer, DLL, of & lambda; and anti- & lambda; hyperons in longitudinally polarized proton-proton collisions is sensitive to quark and anti-quark polarization in the polarized proton; as well as to polarized fragmentation; and has been proposed as a possible probe of (anti- )strange quark polarization. The STAR collaboration has previously reported an initial proof-of-concept measurement of DLL of & lambda; and anti- & lambda; hyperons from a data sample obtained at sqr(s)=200 GeV in 2005. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 2 pb- with 50% beam polarization. Considerably larger data samples corresponding to 6.5 pb- and 25 pb- with beam polarizations of 57% at sqr(s)=200 GeV were obtained in 2006 and 2009 using an upgraded instrument. Improvements were made on the analysis procedure to reduce background contribution to the & lambda; + anti- & lambda; measurements. These new measurements of DLL form the main topic of this dissertation. The sample of hyperons residing within a jet that triggered the experiment are classified as near-side hyperons, and are analyzed separately from an away-side sample that has similar precision. In addition to DLL, the double longitudinal spin asymmetry, ALL, for the production of & lambda; and anti- & lambda; hyperons has been extracted. The dependences of DLL on pseudo-rapidity, pT, and the fragmentation ratio, z, are studied. The stated DLL from & lambda; and anti- & lambda; each disfavor one of the published model predictions for DLL for a combined & lambda; and anti- & lambda; sample, and are consistent with other predictions as well as with the preceding data. The disfavored model prediction is based on the assumption that up, down, and strange (anti- )quark spins contribute equally to polarized fragmentation into & lambda; + anti- & lambda; hyperons. Future data with improved statistical precision, including data at sqr(s)=500 GeV, are needed to discriminate between the other models.
