Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research and innovation are two pillars that come together when universities are at stake. The expansion of the frontiers of human knowledge, in all areas and disciplines, is an irrefutable commitment of higher education institutions. Together with public and private entities, they are also committed to promoting knowledge transfer to society and the economy, in the form of new ideas, new products and new processes. Universities are supposed to transform ideas into value for society. To achieve these goals, higher education institutions have to assure their human resources are highly qualified, that they have an adequate atmosphere, that research is of high quality, and finally that adequate interactions take place. At UMinho we have a clear strategy to be an open and permanent space for knowledge production and furtherance of nationally and internationally relevant innovation across different social and economic sectors. For many years, UMinho has adopted the principles of open access and open science. We aim at carrying out our scientific activity and the dissemination of the corresponding results transparently and collaboratively; this implies that researchers, citizens, policymakers, state agencies, companies, and third sector organizations work in close cooperation facing research and innovation processes. We believe this is the shorter way to trigger smart and sustainable growth and qualified job creation. At UMinho, we encourage the coupling between research and education. Our goal is to expand research opportunities and to give our students occasions to experience vibrant research environments, ensuring that learning goes beyond the “common” routines. Joining research and learning processes provides both undergraduate and postgraduate students with opportunities to own their learning process. We believe that research experience has a role to play in improving students’ motivation for learning, in the pursuit of their interests. Doing better science occurs when we make it both more sensitive to the needs of society and also more efficient in what concerns the allocated resources. It is also a question of accountability. This is fundamental for reinforcing society awareness about our contributions to human and social development. Following the 2018 publication, we present here the 2019 edition of Research and Innovation, a series that draws on the outcomes of the activity of the UMinho research and innovation ecosystem. This comprehensive volume gives particular emphasis to the Research Units outcomes, namely in terms of funding, research projects, papers, and the most important achievements; the activity of the Interface Units and Collaborative Laboratories in which UMinho participates is also reported, through their activities and institutional projects, making evident their importance for the continuous growth of our Institution, our region, and our country. Book excerpt: The sources of ultra high energy cosmic rays detected by the Pierre Auger Observatory are yet unknown. It is natural to expect that cosmic-ray sources could produce high-energy neutrinos detectable by IceCube. In this work we discuss the potential utility and implementation of a correlation search between IceCube and Auger. Any such correlations would allow an unprecedented view of transient astrophysical events, such as a gamma-ray burst. Where previous studies have focused on thehighest energy events(ECR > 57 EeV), weanalyzethe subthreshold data available in the IceCube public dataset and overlapping Auger data down to ECR = 3 EeV. A likelihood estimator is constructed from spatial and temporal correlations based on Monte Carlo simulations of the data. Data is compared to a randomized (scrambled) data set, where any correlations are bound to be accidental, and shown to be consistent with the background hypothesis. We then discuss how this procedure can be used in a real time search, allowing for any coincidences with sufciently high likelihood to be followed up with near real time multiwavelength observations.

R&D was done to increase of the dynamical range of Hamamatsu PMTs using the technique based on the reading out of deeper dynodes, reaching 20 bits. To increase the statistics at high energy, a relax trigger selection was designed to be used in further Auger data analysis. Further, point sources were searched in direction of the Galactic Center and Centaurus A. We also developed a new method for searching for anisotropies without relying on any catalog that provides the clustering scale and an analytical way to compute the chance probability. Using it, we place important limits on the density of sources and the deflections of the extra-galactic cosmic rays. In the low energy range, we performed a first harmonic analysis using a new method to account for detector effects. Upper bounds were given above 1 EeV with an indication of a signal at all energies pointed out by the smooth transition of the phase. Finally, using both a numerical method to solve the diffusion equation in a simplified galactic magnetic field mo-del and Monte Carlo simulations, we compare the resulting anisotropy with the possible one, studying also relaxing some hypothesis (stationary sources, isotropic emission).

Book excerpt: The origin and composition of ultrahigh energy cosmic rays has been and continues to be a topic of much study and debate. The Pierre Auger Observatory was designed to investigate the highest energy cosmic rays and resolve some of these problems. In this dissertation, I present a description of the Pierre Auger Observatory and a study of the performance of the surface array as well as work done on the photomultiplier tubes used in the surface array. I also present an analysis done on the composition of the events detected in the surface detector paying special attention to a photon primary assumption. Monte carlo simulations of extensive air showers are put through a simulation of the surface detector and observables are compared to real data. The mean behavior of the real data is compared to various baryonic primary assumptions. For photon primaries, a method is described to set an upper limit on the flux of photons based on comparing real events to expected distributions for photon initiated air showers. An upper limit on the photon flux is presented and compared with predictions from various exotic models of cosmic ray origins.

Book excerpt: Cosmic Rays reach the Earth from space with energies of up to more than 1020 eV, carrying information on the most powerful particle accelerators that Nature has been able to assemble. Understanding where and how cosmic rays originate has required almost one century of investigations, and, although the last word is not written yet, recent observations and theory seem now to fit together to provide us with a global picture of the origin of cosmic rays of unprecedented clarity. Here we will describe what we learned from recent observations of astrophysical sources (such as supernova remnants and active galaxies) and we will illustrate what these observations tell us about the physics of particle acceleration and transport. We will also discuss the "end" of the Galactic cosmic ray spectrum, which bridges out attention towards the so called ultra high energy cosmic rays (UHECRs). At ~1020 eV the gyration scale of cosmic rays in cosmic magnetic fields becomes large enough to allow us to point back to their sources, thereby allowing us to perform "cosmic ray astronomy", as confirmed by the recent results obtained with the Pierre Auger Observatory. We will discuss the implications of these observations for the understanding of UHECRs, as well as some questions which will likely remain unanswered and will be the target of the next generation of cosmic ray experiments.
