Book excerpt: Tommy Atkins is the English soldier, who joking broke the cavalry of France at Minden, who singing marched with the Great Duke to the Danube, who grumbling shattered Napoleon's dreams at Waterloo, who sweating in his red coat tramped back and forth across Indis, who kept his six-rounds-to-the-minute at Mons, and who died in the mud at Passchendaele, the sands of the Western Desert, and the jungles of Burma. If his name has been eclipsed by his more illustrious commanders - Cromwell, Marlborough, Moore, Wolfe, Wellington, Allenby, Slim - they at least will accord him his rightful place beside them. They knew his worth. Tommy Atkins is his story - the story of this most versatile, most adaptable, most un-military soldier.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Storm over South Africa follows the lives and tribulations of a diverse group of characters through the 2nd Anglo-Boer War from 1899-1902 in South Africa. They belonged to different levels of the opposing societies and the story follows their actual life and death experiences in this conflict. The characters include the seventeen-year-old son of a Boer president; a young shipbuilding dock worker and his military nurse girlfriend from the industrial north-east of England, and a young Canadian soldier who volunteered for Canada’s first campaign outside its borders. Involved too are such illustrious British participants as Winston Churchill, Field Marshals Frederick Roberts and Herbert Kitchener, Generals Ian Hamilton and Robert Baden-Powell among others. Boer leaders involved include Generals Christiaan de Wet, Louis Botha, Koos de la Rey and Jan Smuts. The reader is guided through the various twists and turns of the first major British conflict of the 20th century from its beginning through to its end. The naivety and excitement of combatants in the lead up to and beginning of the Second Anglo-Boer War was contagious. It pulled many naïve young men into the maelstrom of combat. It began as another glorious Victorian war. But the successes and failures, sufferings and disillusionment soon emerge. It is a tale of imperial arrogance and determination, of stubbornness, innocence, love and loss experienced in a rugged and alluring land far from the heart of the British Empire.

Song of the Season is for those who believe that the score is at the heart of a musical and is the essential building block on which the rest of a show is built. Through a systematic historical survey from 1891 to 2023 it argues that the best musicals survive because of their songs, from early 20th century classics such as Show Boat and Oklahoma! through to the contemporary sound of Dear Evan Hansen and Hamilton. looking at outstanding songs from each Broadway season, the development and history of the musical is illustrated with a fresh perspective. As song styles and popular music tastes changed throughout the decades this structure charts the progress of American showtunes alongside popular music forms as songs evolved from the waltz and ragtime to jazz, rock, rap and hip-hop. Factual analysis and historical context combine to offer a rich picture of the American songbook from Irving Berlin to Elton John. Song of the Season paints a fresh picture for musical theatre students and fans alike, illustrating significant changes in the form through the music. Analyzed in an accessible and engaging way that doesn't rely on music theory knowledge, and including a link to playlist where all the 'songs of the seasons' can be listened to, it is a must-have for those looking to expand their knowledge of the form and trace the social history of the American showtune.

Book excerpt: This book was not planned it just happened. When it occurred to me that I could write a poem describing the charge of the 24th Regiment of Foot of Chilianwala, just how was I to do it? I decided to write it as being related by a soldier who had participated int he charge against the Sikh guns. He speaks in the 'lingo' of some of the soldiers of my acquantance during my colour service in the British Army. I wrote the other poems in a similar style, with the exception of the recruiting serjeant in The Queen's Shilling, who speaks with the 'Midlands' dialect. During Queen Victoria's long sixty-four year reign, there were constant military expeditions, campaigns and conflicts. Many caused the expansion of the empire, and many as result of that expansion. By European standards Great Britain had a very small standing army, but The Royal Navy was the world's largest. Britannia ruled the waves. Rather like the Roman legionaryies, the 'Tommies' of the period were professional and reliable. On many occasions they defeated the enemy although heavily outnumbered. Perhaps that explains why a relatively small regular army was so successful.

Book excerpt: PULP IS DEAD... Or so we're told. Those dusty, cheaply printed paperbacks you knew and loved of old have lost their relevance. People don't want fast-paced adventure! They want dreary ten-volume collections of thousand-page tomes recounting the lives of the introspective and self-doubting. And yet a quick glance at the shelves today shows the spirit of action and heroism is alive and well in the modern imagination. Abaddon presents three of their best stories of derring-do, relentless violence and sheer pluck. In Simon Spurrier's The Culled, a special ops soldier murders his way across a post-apocalyptic continent to find the one he loves. In Al Ewing's El Sombra, a maddened poet, left for dead in the desert, returns as a laughing angel of vengeance to destroy the Ultimate Reich. And in Pat Kelleher's Black Hand Gang, a "pal's batallion" of WWI Tommies is plucked from the Somme and dropped in a world of ghastly aliens and sudden death.

Book excerpt: When Thomas ‘Only’ Atkins signed up to fight for King and Country, half the boys he grew up with ended up fighting alongside him.The 13th Battalion of the Pennine Fusiliers were a ‘Pal’s Brigade,’ a whole town transposed to the Somme together to feed the Front’s relentless need for warm bodies. They also disappeared from the face of the Earth, on the 1st November 1916, along with nearly half a mile of mud and trenches, a Sopwith and a tank.Finding themselves on a terrifying alien world, Tommy and his mates have to contend with man-eating plants, ravening beasts and the eerie, insectile Chatts—to say nothing of a sinister, arcane threat from within their own ranks...No Man’s World presents all three novels from this series—Black Hand Gang, The Ironclad Prophecy and The Alleyman—along with a new introduction and extensive new content.

Book excerpt: Alfred Burrages War is War is his sincere and successful attempt to record his experiences as a private soldier in France during the First World War, his reactions to abnormal conditions and his observations.Written in the 1920s he wanted the curious to know what war was really like. Burrage realized that nearly all such memoirs were written by ex-officers who inevitably saw the war from a different view point to Tommy Atkins as he put it, the officers were only with us, not of us, and they cannot get inside our skins. In this account, written of necessity under a pseudonym, he covers the wide canvas of war, from off duty moments in grubby estaminets and brothels, to life in shell torn trenches, going over the top with equally terrified yet resigned comrades, being a casualty, to periods of numbing boredom.War is War is superbly crafted and phrased and will be revelation to even the most informed student of The Great War. Private X writes with complete honesty and avoids sentimentality. How fortunate that he at least survived his ordeal to share with us nearly 100 years later his thoughts, fears and experiences.

It calls for a reappraisal of Lewis himself, not as a "soldier-poet" but as a young, ruthless and ambitious would-be academic, using others--his father, his university, his mistress--to further his own ends.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first comprehensive account of global Shakespeare commemoration in the period between 1916 and 2016. Combining historical analysis with insights into current practice, Memorialising Shakespeare covers Shakespeare commemoration in China, Ukraine, Egypt, and France, as well as Great Britain and the United States. Chapter authors discuss a broad range of commemorative activities—from pageants, dance, dramatic performances, and sculpture, to conferences, exhibitions, and more private acts of engagement, such as reading and diary writing. Themes covered include Shakespeare’s role in the formation of cultural memory and national and global identities, as well as Shakespeare’s relationship to decolonisation and race. A significant feature of the book is the inclusion of chapters from organisers of recent Shakespeare commemoration events, reflecting on their own practice. Together, the chapters in Memorialising Shakespeare show what has been at stake when communities, identity groups, and institutions have come together to commemorate Shakespeare.
