Book excerpt: Diploma Thesis from the year 2005 in the subject Economics - Case Scenarios, grade: 2,3, University of L neburg, 71 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: To privatise is to drive a two-horse cart. The cart is the enterprise in question. One horse is called Political Goals and is flighty and fickle; the other is called Economics, and is slow and steady. They have to pull the cart along the Road to Privatisation, which is a rough, boulder-strewn track. The cart is full of cases of vintage wine, which is unfortunate because the horses are pulling in different directions. The bottles of wine, which can be enjoyed only when the cart reaches its goals, are labelled 'improved efficiency', 'high sales price', 'effective governance', 'economic investment', and so on. Since the mid-1970s the idea of privatisation has been promoted and the elections of Margaret Thatcher as prime minister of Britain and Ronald Reagan as president of the United States, in 1979 and 1980 respectively, led to a huge privatisation movement in industrial countries. Although some developing countries engaged in privatisation activities during the early 1980s - Chile was a front runner in this movement - most of those countries did not implement privatisation as a tool of macroeconomic liberalisation before the late 1980s. Since then many experiences have been collected and led to different forms of private sector involvement. Privatisation, public-private-partnerships (PPP) and private-sector-participation (PSP) are common used expressions although the differences between them are very unclear. Nevertheless these approaches have become driving forces in international development strategies although the success is highly questionable. There seems to be a lack of knowledge on the benefits and risks of the private sector involvement in developing countries. Especially the effects in the water sector produced opposing results. The aim of this thesis is to analyse this ongoing debat

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first comprehensive, multi-disciplinary book to address water policy in Jordan. Edited by the former Minister of Water and Irrigation of Jordan, with contributions by other prominent Jordanian and international water professionals, this volume covers such areas as the population-water resources equation in Jordan; institutional and legal frameworks; the data systems used for the assessment and formulation of water policy; water allocations and uses in municipal, industrial, and agricultural sectors; social and environmental issues; and water conflict with Jordan's neighbors. The book is a must for readers interested in Middle East politics and the critical nature of water issues in the region. The book notes the importance of interaction with the outside world to augment water resources through trade, making the experience of Jordan relevant to other developing regions where water is scarce. It introduces the term 'shadow water' to mean the scarce indigenous water resources that the import of agricultural and industrial commodities saves or replaces. The book shows how financially profitable it can be to treat water as a tradable commodity, to be exchanged peaceably across international borders. Haddadin and his distinguished contributors bring the water conflicts between Jordan and its neighbors, Israel and Syria, into sharp focus. The book includes a historical perspective on the development of water policies in Jordan and explores the significance of water in the religious, social, and political life of the country.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Containing papers from the ninth International Conference on Sustainable Water Resources Management, this book presents the work of scientists, practitioners and other experts regarding recent technological and scientific developments associated with the management of surface and sub-surface water resources. Water is essential for sustaining life on our planet, nevertheless its unequal distribution is a source of permanent conflict. It is predicted that population growth and irregular rainfall, due to climate change, may lead to more restricted access to water in certain regions of the world. This problem is made even more severe by human actions that can cause degradation to nature and the environment. These papers cover such topics as: Water management and planning; Water rights and accessibility; Water markets economics and policies; Climate change; Sedimental soil erosion; Irrigation; Water resources in arid regions; Ground water; Urban water management; Hydraulic engineering; Trans-boundary water management; Water, food and energy; Socio-economic aspects; Innovative technologies; Water and the community; Integrated water analysis; Wetlands as water sources.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The worldwide privatization of public sector services has expanded market opportunities for transnational corporations enormously. Ann-Christian Holland visits countries as far apart as Britain and Argentina, Ghana and South Africa, to find the effect of privatization on that most basic of human needs, fresh water. She finds that two companies, Suez and Veolia, rapidly came to dominate nearly 80% of the privatized water market. As prices for water soared, massive public protests erupted in country after country. Holland interviewed senior corporate executives to get their responses, and sets out the arguments on both sides to present some of the innovative ideas and experiments for providing water as an essential service for all citizens.

Book excerpt: A unique interdisciplinary study of the relationships between climate, hydrology and human society from 20,000 years ago to the present day within the Jordan Valley. It describes how state-of-the-art models can simulate the past, present and future climates of the Near East, reviews and provides new evidence for environmental change from geological deposits, builds hydrological models for the River Jordan and associated wadis and explains how present day urban and rural communities manage their water supply. The volume provides a new approach and new methods that can be applied for exploring the relationships between climate, hydrology and human society in arid and semi-arid regions throughout the world. It is an invaluable reference for researchers and advanced students concerned with the impacts of climate change and hydrology on human society, especially in the Near East.
