Renz and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-02-11 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Private Gold Coinage of the United States: A Treatise on the Subject of "Private and Territorial Gold Coins of the U. S.," Including the First Important Issues of the Bechtlers and the Later California Coinage From the Various Private Mints of That State Thru the medium of present day scenario and fiction writers the the picture and story of the pioneer is vividly brought to us. We may still see the covered wagon, stage coach and pony express. We may still witness the hardships these pepple endured, the misfortunes, the brighter side; sudden wealth, love, romance, and the fascination of it all. While we do not seethese things in reality, we do however, as numismatists, preserve that which is real and appropriately emblematic of the pioneer. I refer, of course, to the private issues of gold which are so scarce today and cherished so much by the numismatist. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Private Gold Coins Struck in the United States, 1830-1861: A Complete Illustrated List of the Various Coins Issued by Private Assayers in Georgia, Carolina, Colorado, Utah, Oregon and California Upon the discovery of gold in California and the influx of prospectors and traders there was an immediate need for a medium of exchange other than the unwieldy bags of gold dust. Several firms struck coins in 1849 and the State Assay Office of California, with Frederick D. Kohler as State Assayer, began stamping ingots early in 1850; a few of these still exist. In the latter part of 1850 the firm of Moffat Co. Were designated as United States Assay representatives and Augustus Humbert of New York was appointed United States Assayer to place the government stamp upon the ingots produced by Moffat Co. This business was in 1852 con ducted under the name of the United States Assay Office. For a full account of the preceding and the operations of other com panies see Edgar H. Adams Private Gold Coinage of California. The Mormon coinage grew out of the same necessity and appeared early in 1849. It did not, however, compare with the California coinages in actual intrinsic value. The firm of Clark, Gruber Co. In Denver coined gold from the Colorado mines and produced over worth in 1860 and 1861. The Parsons and Conway companies were much smaller operators. Way up in Oregon the same need for a medium of exchange produced the two pieces struck by the Oregon Exchange Co. In 1849. It has been thought best to limit the scope of this work to a complete illustrated list of the various coinages, excepting the minor die varieties existing in some of the California pieces. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Standard Catalogue of United States Coins From 1652 to Present Day: Early American Coins, Coins of the States, United States Gold, Silver and Copper Coins, Private Gold Coins, Pattern Coins, Encased Postage Stamps, Commemorative Coins, Philippine Islands Coins, Hawaiian Coins, General Information, Complete Mint Reports The first mint established in this country was authorized by the General Court of Massachusetts in 1651 and began operation in Boston the follow ing year. The ne, willow, oak and pine tree coins were the product of this mint. The Bermuda coinage antedates the above by over thirty years but could hardly have had any circulation in the colonies. In 1658 the Lord Baltimore coins were planned for Maryland but never achieved any circulation as they were all short weight. William Wood received a Royal Grant to strike copper coins for use in the colonies and his Rosa Americana pieces undoubtedly had some circula tion here as well as his Hibernia halfpence which were not accepted in Ireland. After the Revolution several of the states established their own mints, those of New Jersey. And Connecticut having quite an extensive coinage of great interest to present day collectors. The various experimental and trial pieces speak for themselves as little is known about them, except that a large proportion. Of them originated in England, evidently as an effort to secure contracts for the preparation of dies for a new coinage. To the collector who acquires a really scientific interest in this series Crosby's Early Coins of America is the only standard work and the sixty years since the publication have added very little to the general knowledge of the subject.
