Book excerpt: With the growing need for maintenance or reconstruction of existing infrastructure and the construction of newinfrastructure, work zone (WZ) setup and management are important for the safe and efficient movement of roadusers and protection of construction workers and personnel. This study conducted a pilot implementation of SWZs to evaluate the effectiveness of deploying Active Work Zone Awareness Devices (AWADs), connected vehicle technologies via iCone products, stationary police vehicles with flashing blue lights, and their combinations in improving WZ safety on arterials, considering three stationary WZ types: lane closure, lane shift, and work on shoulder or median. This research focused major efforts to evaluate the effectiveness of AWAD deployment and its combinations with other applications.

Book excerpt: This primer has been developed to assist agencies in establishing and monitoring a useful set of work zone safety and mobility performance measures. Work zone performance measures are metrics that help to quantify how work zones impact travelers, residents, businesses and workers. Work zone performance measures help agencies improve their understanding of how their decisions during planning, design, and construction affect work zone safety and mobility, and thus can help improve how they make decisions for future work zones. The primer describes possible work zone performance measures, and provides guidance to help agencies select and implement measures that make sense for their own work zone programs. The primer outlines the methods and technologies that are available to gather data to monitor the various possible measures and procedures for calculating specific performance measures from different types of work zone traffic monitoring data. The primer also discusses the use of measures across multiple projects to assess an agency's overall efforts and outcomes against its policies and goals.

Book excerpt: This Work Zone Best Practices Guidebook provides an easily accessible compilation of work zone operations practices used and recommended by various States and localities around the country. The Guidebook is a reference document that can be updated with new approaches, technologies, and practices for effectively managing work zones and reducing the impacts of work zones on mobility and safety as they are identified. The best practices are descriptive, not prescriptive. They describe approaches that have been successfully used by transportation agencies, along with contact information to find out more from the agency using the practice. Each organization must determine which of these practices are best suited for its particular situation, considering all the site-specific factors that affect work zone operations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This implementation guide describes the conceptual framework, data requirements, and computational procedures for determining the safety and mobility impacts of work zones in Texas. Researchers designed the framework and procedures to assist district-level personnel who have responsibility for work zone safety and mobility impact reviews of significant projects as required by Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) policy. In this guide, researchers describe the types of impact monitoring and analysis that can occur as part of ongoing project activities and those that can be performed during post-project reviews. Analysis procedures are presented to assist in determining which projects should be targeted for regular reviews of crash data during the project, as well as the increase in crash frequency that is indicative of unusual safety concerns that should be investigated further through field observations. Researchers also present analysis procedures to guide district personnel in determining the queue lengths, individual vehicle delays, and total vehicle-hours of delay that are created during temporary lane closures in a project.

This book was released on 2012 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Work zone crashes and fatalities have been decreasing since 1994. Yet, according to Fatality Analysis Reporting System, 667 people were killed in highway work zone crashes in 2009. As the United States' infrastructure ages and new roads and highways are constructed less frequently, the need for repairs and alterations to the nation's roadways is continually increasing. This growth ensures that work zones will be a vital piece of design focus in the near future. In order to continue the decreasing trend in work zone crashes, and reduce the still significant number of work zone fatalities, work zones need to continually be examined to identify opportunities for improved safety. This research explored the relationship between work zone related crashes and work zone design and setup. More specifically, existing literature and current standards, compiled with crash report form data in the UMass Safety Data Warehouse and field observations in Massachusetts were integrated to determine the causes and remedies for work zone related crashes. The research examined three critical areas: 1) causation of work zone related crashes in contrast to non-work zone related crashes along with variations of citations as a result of work zone crashes; 2) variations of the work zone definition and the impact on work zone involvement; and 3) analysis of conflict and event studies for small scale work zones to develop a methodology using surrogate measures to identify potential countermeasures leading to improved work zone safety. The results are expected to advance the current state of knowledge with regards to work zone design and setup, resulting in recommended actions for improved work zone analysis and design strategies.
