It appears, now, that the thought of this paper could be simplified. The primary notion is the philosopher's "way to be." Style, locus of interest, nisus and way of thought can then be seen as growing out of this, as particular aspects or expressions of it. This entire paper then would be an attempt to come to grips with the primary notion. How is a "way to be" related to what is normally called a philo sopher's views or theories (the formulable core)? Is it not irrelevant as non-implicatory fact, like biographical details or social background? I do not think so. A philosopher's way to be is not external fact to the formulable core of his thought. It is not "internal" either in the logical sense. It is what allows us to comprehend his explicit views.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new translation of Immanuel Kant’s 1790 "Critique of Judgement" in modern American English with the original German in the back for reference. This is Volume IX in the Complete Works of Immanuel Kant from Newcomb Livraria Press. "Herewith I end my whole critical business" Kant states in the preface to his third and final Critique in his core triad of critical philosophical treatises. In his old age, he turned from being Polemic to being prescriptive in his vision for a future of transcendental, rational morality. Here he recaps his whole critical system and breaks out his final thoughts between a Critique of Aesthetic and Teleological Judgment. Between Pure Reason (theoretical) and Practical Reason (law and ethics) stands the mediating Power of Judgement which recognizes the particular in the general and bridges the chasm between sensuality and morality, nature and freedom, manifesting itself to the senses. Kant's Teleological, dialectal understanding of the experience of art is still used today in Modern art theory. His analysis of sublimity as "disinterested pleasure" as an aesthetic experience between the dynamics of the cognitive faculties of sensuality and rationality, creates a paradox of judgment as both subjective and universal. To Kant, the correct recognition of what beauty is, and responding to it authentically (morally), is vital to his entire project.

Book excerpt: Written at the crossroads of aesthetics and politics, Reproducing Enlightenment: Paradoxes of the Body Politic interrogates the abstraction of the bearer of rights in Enlightenment thought by exploring contradictions between reproductive labor and political representation in the ideal of democratic citizenship. Drawing parallels between new definitions of biological form in Kant’s Critique of Judgment and his popular writings on Enlightenment, Reese’s study reveals connections between naturalist inquiry and the political category of self-evidence around the turn of the 19th century. Pursuing this connection into Weimar-Classical era aesthetics, Reese’s scholarship sets the backdrop against which she proposes to read the formal literary innovations of Mary Shelley and Heinrich von Kleist. The careful comparison of textual compositions by Shelley and Kleist shows how these two authors refuse organicist metaphor and excavate the paradoxes of Enlightenment attempts to theorize the equality of a disembodied subject. Reproducing Enlightenment traces two anti-classical poetics that arc beyond the concept of juridical and biological self-evidence to touch the dialectics and dilemmas of recognition at the foundation of social being.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his last work, "Crisis of the European Sciences and Transcendental Phenomenology", Edmund Husserl formulated a radical new approach to phenomenological philosophy. Unlike his previous works, in the "Crisis" Husserl embedded this formulation in an ambitious reflection on the essence and value of the idea of rational thought and culture, a reflection that he considered to be an urgent necessity in light of the political, social, and intellectual crisis of the interwar period. In this book, James Dodd pursues an interpretation of Husserl's text that emphasizes the importance of the problem of the origin of philosophy, as well as advances the thesis that, for Husserl, the "crisis of reason" is not a contingent historical event, but a permanent feature of a life in reason generally.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Michael P. Berman’s Merleau-Ponty and God: Hallowing the Hollow examines issues in the philosophy of religion through the phenomenological and existential writings of the French philosopher Maurice Merleau-Ponty (1908–1961). Merleau-Ponty addressed issues like the nature of faith, the problem of evil, and the love and judgment of God. Throughout the book Berman explains and critically interrogates the religious perspectives articulated in Merleau-Ponty’s thought. Merleau-Ponty challenges us to think through these issues but always with an eye to our embodiment and perceptual experience. In this vein, Merleau-Ponty and God fleshes out the French philosopher’s treatment of God in his writings. Merleau-Ponty and God will appeal to those interested in the philosophy of religion (inside and outside the academy), as well as scholars and students of Merleau-Ponty, continental philosophy, phenomenology, or existentialism.
