Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An exciting guide to, and celebration of, the Whitney Museum and its outstanding collection of American art This all-new handbook, a fresh look at the Whitney Museum of American Art's collection, highlights the museum's extraordinary holdings and its fascinating history. Featuring iconic pieces by artists such as Calder, Hopper, Johns, O'Keeffe, and Warhol--as well as numerous works by under-recognized individuals--this is not only a guide to the Whitney's collection, but also a remarkable primer on modern and contemporary American art. Beautifully illustrated with abundant new photography, the book pairs scholarly entries on 350 artists with images of some of their most significant works. The museum's history and the evolution of its collection, including the Whitney's important distinction as one of the few American museums founded by an artist, and the notion of "American" in relation to the collection, are covered in two short essays. Published to coincide with the Whitney's highly anticipated move to a new facility in downtown New York in the spring of 2015, this book celebrates the museum's storied past and vibrant present as it looks ahead to its future.

Why do they look the way they do? And why have they captured the imagination of timeless artists, Romantic poets, and every kid who's ever held a crayon? Veteran journalist and lifelong sky watcher Gavin Pretor-Pinney reveals everything there is to know about clouds, from history and science to art and pop culture. Cumulus, nimbostratus, and the dramatic and surfable Morning Glory cloud are just a few of the varieties explored in this smart, witty, and eclectic tour through the skies. Illustrated with striking photographs (including a new section in full-color) and line drawings featuring everything from classical paintings to lava lamps, The Cloudspotter's Guide will have enthusiasts, weather watchers, and the just plain curious floating on cloud nine.

Book excerpt: Handbook of the Colour Print in China 1600-1800' is a ground-breaking volume of collected research into colour woodblock printed imagery produced in early modern China. The emergence and development of colour woodblock imagery occurred first in book illustrations and then in single-sheet prints. 0Leading scholars of Chinese print culture trace the emergence of a sophisticated and fully developed colour woodblock print technology between the late Ming and mid-Qing. This volume examines the impact of colour prints on Qing visual culture through interdisciplinary studies investigating literary and artistic contexts, social and economic histories, and dating through European inventoried collections. 0Richly illustrated with full-colour reproductions, this volume is an essential contribution to the future study of Chinese print and book culture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Print-Collector's Handbook In the following pages an attempt is made to supply answers to some of the many questions that a number of years' experience has shown to be those most frequently asked by art amateurs at the commencement of their print-collecting, and also by those who have devoted some time and attention to the pursuit of their hobby. In consequence of the limitation of a single volume like the present one, it has been thought best to refrain from commenting upon the etchings and engravings of living artists whose place in art is not yet definitely fixed. Most of the illustrations have been made by the half-tone process; but in order that collectors may more closely examine the actual technique of the different methods of engraving, specimens of the various styles have been reproduced in collotype. In this latter process no screen or visible foreign grain intervenes to impair or destroy the texture of the original work, and the results are therefore as faithful as a mechanical process will yield. These collotype reproductions can be easily identified by reference to the List of Illustrations. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book, probing a number of resources and incorporating advice from top experts in the field, offers guidance on collection management and care, and serves as an important reference guide for collectors and those charged with managing collections.
