Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Polymer composites represent a field of intense and growing interest to consumers and producers of plastics. They are used to solve the most acute problems: energy and oil conservation, improvement of the properties of polymer materials, and the increase of their use. Even special problems, such as inflammability of plastics and industrial wastes, are closely connected with polymer composites. The achievements in this field are well known. Polymer composites have been widely used in building, furniture, electric appliances, cars, and other fields. Their production is growing at a higher rate than that of polymers as a whole. In the present book the emphasis is put on the principles that may become the foundation of designing new highly effective composites. The authors analyze their favorable properties as compared to "unfilled" polymers, as well as the means to improve moldability and strength. Economical and technical problems are examined. Special attention is paid to the matching of the components, development of technological processes of composites production, and to new ideas in the field. Fundamental and practical aspects of calculating properties and structure of composites are examined. The scope of the book does not include composites based on continuous reinforcing fibers, polymeric concretes, nor other special-purpose materials in which polymers are used to modify the properties of inorganic materials. The book reflects mainly ideas developed at the Institute of Chemical Physics of the USSR Academy of Sciences, but it also contains a review of the latest works in the field.

This book was released on 2009 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on 15 years of composites manufacturing instruction, the Principles of the Manufacturing of Composite Materials is the first text to offer both a practical and analytic approach to composite manufacturing processes. It ties together key tools for analyzing the mechanics of composites with the processes whereby composite products are fabricated, whether by hand lay-up or through automated processes. The book outlines the principles of chemistry, physics, materials science and engineering and shows how these are connected to the design and production of a variety of composites, primarily polymeric. It thus provides analytic, quantitative tools to answer the questions of why certain materials are linked with specific processes, and why products are manufactured by one process rather than another. All phases of matrix material formation are explained, as are practical design details for fabrics, autoclaving, filament winding, pultrusion, liquid composite molding, hand techniques, joints and joint bonding, and more. A special section is devoted to nanocomposites. The book includes exercises for university students and practitioners.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Providing a useful summary of current knowledge on the friction and wear properties of composite materials, this book fills the gap between publications on fundamental principles of tribology and those on the friction and wear behavior of metals and polymers. Detailed coverage is given of: the fundamental aspects of tribology in general and polymer composites in particular; the effects of the microstructure of composites on friction and wear behavior under different external loading conditions; and the problem of the control of friction and wear behavior in practical situations. Although emphasis is on polymer composites associated with bearing-type applications, part of the book is also devoted to the friction and wear of metal-based composites and rubber compounds. The data are represented in the form of 277 figures, diagrams and photographs, and 68 tables. The author index covers more than 670 references, and the subject index more than 1,000 keywords. The book will be of particular interest to: those involved in research on some aspects of polymer composites tribology (material scientists, physical chemists, mechanical engineers); those wishing to learn more methods for solving practical friction or wear problems (designers, engineers and technologists in industries, dealing with selection, reprocessing and application of polymer engineering materials); and teachers and students at universities.

Book excerpt: Wood-polymer composites (WPC) are materials in which wood is impregnated with monomers that are then polymerised in the wood to tailor the material for special applications. The resulting properties of these materials, from lightness and enhanced mechanical properties to greater sustainability, has meant a growing number of applications in such areas as building, construction and automotive engineering. This important book reviews the manufacture of wood-polymer composites, how their properties can be assessed and improved and their range of uses. After an introductory chapter, the book reviews key aspects of manufacture, including raw materials, manufacturing technologies and interactions between wood and synthetic polymers. Building on this foundation, the following group of chapters discusses mechanical and other properties such as durability, creep behaviour and processing performance. The book concludes by looking at orientated wood-polymer composites, wood-polymer composite foams, at ways of assessing performance and at the range of current and future applications. With its distinguished editors and international team of contributors, Wood-polymer composites is a valuable reference for all those using and studying these important materials. - Provides a comprehensive survey of major new developments in wood-polymer composites - Reviews the key aspects of manufacture, including raw materials and manufacturing technologies - Discusses properties such as durability, creep behaviour and processing performance

Book excerpt: This text presents the structural characteristics of plastics, rubbers, and polymer composites, describing how these important materials are converted into useful products. Engineering principles and design procedures are accorded an exceptionally clear and rigorous treatment, illustrated with carefully chosen model calculations, numerous worked examples and problems. Aimed at undergraduates and postgraduate students of engineering and materials science, the book opens with chapters showing why plastics and rubbers have such distinctive properties and how they are affected by temperature, strain rate, and other factors. The second half of the book concentrates on the ways in which these properties can be exploited to produce components that function in the most effective manner.

Jack Weitsman, addresses the wide range of parameters that affect the interaction of fluids with polymers and polymeric composites. The book aims at broadening the scope of available data, mostly limited up to this time to weight-gain recordings of fluid ingress into polymers and composites, to the practical circumstances of fluctuating exposure. Various forms of experimental data are given, in conjunction with theoretical models derived from basic scientific principles, and correlated with severity of exposure conditions and interpreted by means of rationally based theoretical models. The practical implications of the effects of fluids are discussed. The issue of fluid effects on polymers and polymeric composites is of concern to engineers and scientists active in aerospace and naval structures, as an increasing portion of these structures are made of polymeric composites and employ polymeric adhesives as a joining device. While the book is intended for this audience, it will also interest researchers and graduate students interested in the mechanics and materials aspects of this matter.
