Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Political Economy The successive French editions of the work have undergone numerous and important changes, - changes not so much in the general scope and spirit of the book as in the manner of presenting certain sections of the subject. The fundamental purpose has remained precisely the same: to give the reader a plain statement of the accepted principles of economics a summary of the unsettled problems of the science, and a clear, brief, and impartial outline of the various solutions that have been proposed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles of Economic Geography This volume attempts to give little more than an outline of the principles of economic geography in a readable form. The scope of the subject is liberally interpreted in the belief that the deeper and wider the foundations the surer the edifice that can be built. For this reason several matters are touched on which are not often dealt with in works on economic geography. Statistical matter, as far as possible, has been avoided as out of keeping with the aim of the book. Moreover, statistics for recent years, even when available, do not illustrate the normal features of production and trade, owing to the dislocation caused by the war. Book excerpt: Excerpt from National Economy and the Banking System of the United States: An Exposition of the Principles of Modern Monetary Science in Their Relation to the National Economy and the Banking System of the United States This act was generally regarded as the greatest achievement of that administration. Under this act of liquid money was created to finance the World War. It financed not only the United States but financed to the extent of billions of dollars Great Britain, France, Italy, and their allies. That one act won the war, said John Skelton Williams, the Comptroller of the Currency. The United States came out of this war in a highly prosperous condition. This prosperity was the result of the expansion of credit and currency which enormously stimulated production and employ ment. In 1921 those in control of the Federal Reserve System contracted credit and currency by the use of the great powers of the Federal Reserve Act. It resulted in depression. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Political Economy: Applied to the Condition, the Resources, and the Institutions of the American People The work was not designed to be wholly controversial and original; besides suggesting the doctrines which are to take the place of those which have been rejected, it was intended to contain a summary of what is most valuable in other treatises upon the subject, so as to form a con venient text-book of instruction in American colleges. Most teachers will probably accept the conclusion which I have formed, after many years' experience, that it is a wearisome and hopeless task to at tempt to instruct a class Of pupils from any Of the English or French treatises upon the science. This volume contains the substance of a course of lectures upon Political Economy, first delivered before the Lowell Institute in Boston five years ago, and afterwards repeated, with many changes and additions, before successive classes in college. It also comprises all that was deemed worthy of preservation in a series of articles upon various topics in the science, which have been published during the last ten years in the North American Review. I have not deemed it necessary to rewrite what was at first carefully prepared for publication, when time and further reflection had not suggested any change of doctrine, or any material improvements in illustration or phraseology. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Economics, Vol. 1 The order of the topics has been determined more by convenience for exposition than by any strict regard for system. In general, a subject has been entered on only when the main conclusions relat ing to it could be followed to the end. Yet so close is the connec tion between the different parts of economics that it has been nec essary sometimes to go part way in the consideration of matters on which the final word had to be reserved for a later stage. Taxation has offered, as regards its place in the arrangement, perhaps the greatest difficulties. It is so closely connected with economics that some consideration of it seemed essential; whereas public finance in the stricter sense, whose problems are political quite as much as economic, has been omitted. Yet a suitable place for taxation was not easy to find. I concluded finally to put the chapters on this subject at the very close, even though they may have the effect of an anti-climax coming as they do after those on socialism. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Economic Principles His volume contains hardly any references to the writers who have built up the theories of economics and given them the form which renders them useful in understanding modern economic facts. In omitting these references, my desire has been, not merely to avoid introducing controversies which can only interest students more advanced than those for whom I wrote, but also to retain a freedom of expression which I must have denied myself had I assigned each point of doctrine to those who first, or most clearly, gave it expression. I should like to express my indebtedness to many recent writers, and, if I have given an interpretation of them, here and there, some what different from their own, i trust that I have not lost the essence of their doctrines, so far as I am able to accept them. No Cambridge student of economics in recent years can fail to have gained inspiration from contact with Professor Marshall, and the writer is conscious of a very special obligation to the teacher to whom he owes his chief guidance in economic study. As with others, so especially in this case, the acknow ledgment of inspiration carries with it no attempt to place a burden of responsibility for either the form or the substance of what is written here. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Leading: Principles of Political Economy Newly Expounded Though the following work is an attempt to recast some considerable portion of Political Economy, I should be sorry it were regarded as in any sense antagonistic in its attitude toward the science built up by the labors of Adam Smith, Malthus, Ricardo, and Mill. On the contrary, my hope is that it will - should its reasonings find acceptance - strengthen, in some sensible degree, and add consistence to that fabric. As regards those assumptions respecting human character and the physical conditions of external nature which constitute the ultimate premises of economic science, the position I have taken is identical with that of the four great writers I have named; and I have endeavored also to follow the method of combined deduction and verification by comparison with facts, which was theirs, and which is, as I believe, the only fruitful, or indeed possible method in economic inquiry. Nor do the final conclusions which I have reached differ very widely on any important points from those at which they had arrived. The points on which I have ventured to join issue with them are what, in Bacon's language, may be called the axiomata media of the science - those intermediate principles by means of which the detailed results are connected with the higher causes which produce them. If I have not deceived myself, there is in this portion of Political Economy, as at present generally received, no small proportion of faulty material; and the present work may be regarded as an attempt, so far as it goes, to replace this element of weakness with matter better fitted to endure the strain of modern criticism. It is hoped that this revision Of fundamental concepts, as well as the new treatment Of enterprise and profits, the fuller statement of the capitalization theory of interest, and the separation Of the dynamic from the static theory, will be found helpful to teachers and acceptable in the end to all economic students.
