Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the Study of Organic Chemistry IN the writing of text-books of Organic Chemistry there are two distinct and incompatible systems. In the one, it is the practical aspect of the science which is kept in chief view in the other, its symmetry and homogeneity. The one constantly directs attention to detail the other approaches the subject with the desire of displaying its orderly principles and structural unity. The present writer adheres with conviction to the latter method. The reader of text-books based upon the practical point of view is apt, if he be a beginner, to lose the thread of the argument in the wealth of facts for the mass of information necessary for the proper comprehension of the main principles of organic chemistry is so great, that additional details hinder rather than assist the student in his laborious task of assimilation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Text Book of Organic Chemistry AN attempt is here made to present the fundamental principles of organic chemistry for the use of those begin ning the subject. The most radical departure from the method of treatment adopted in other books treating of the same subject, consists in the dropping of the division into fatty and aromatic compounds, and in the adop tion of what appears to the author a more fundamental and logical classification. This novelty of arrangement will, it is hoped, be found to be justified, partly by the fact that so many connecting links are now known between the two classes of bodies that they no longer stand isolated from each other; and further it is believed that the new method of treatment brings out the important contrasts in chemical conduct for the two series fully as well as the old. One of the most serious difficulties in presenting this subject lies in the overwhelming and ever increasing mass of material at our disposal. It is no longer possible, within a reasonable compass, to present all classes of compounds even, and important compounds of a given class must often be omitted. No two authors would make the same selection, and' that here given is doubtless open to just Criticism at some points. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Class-Book of Organic Chemistry This little volume has been written as an introduction to 'organic chemistry for the use of first year medical students and for senior science students in schools. By treating the theoretical and practical sides of the subject concurrently, it is intended that the book may serve the double purpose of text-book and laboratory manual. It is divided into three parts. In the first part the general principles underlying determinations of purity, empiric and molecular formulae and structure, are explained and illustrated by a careful study of two of the most familiar and most easily procurable organic substances, viz., methyl and ethyl alcohols. In the second part, the aliphatic compounds are described in a more systematic fashion and the third part is devoted to a brief account of the more important members of the aromatic series. It is hoped that the book will fill a gap and serve the purpose for which it was written. I wish to acknowledge the valuable help I have received from Mr. A. T. Simmons in the correction of the proofs. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of General Organic Chemistry With regard to the object of this work there is little to add to Professor Hjelt's remarks; it is intended for those students who have already some general elementary knowledge of organic chemistry, and who wish to extend and systematise that knowledge. In Part I. the composition, constitution, and classification of organic compounds are discussed and explained as clearly and concisely as possible. Part II. is devoted to illustrating the connection between the constitution of organic compounds and their chief physical properties. Part III. deals with the chemical behaviour of organic compounds. The reactions described in this section are in all cases arranged according to the results; dehydration processes for instance being all classed together. Although such a division is somewhat novel, experience has shown that it materially assists students in obtaining a wide and thorough grasp of the subject. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Organic Chemistry for Advanced Students, Vol. 2 The object of recasting the former two volumes of the 'organic Chemistry for Advanced Students' in the three parts in which they now appear has been to group together allied subjects and to link them as far as possible in a consecutive form. As this entailed re-arrangement of the plates, an Opportunity was afforded of bringing the subject-matter up to date, and very considerable additions have been made to the contents of the former volumes. As stated in the original preface, the book is not intended to serve as a reference book, but to furnish a general survey of those fundamental principles which underlie the modern developments of this branch of chemistry. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of Organic Chemistry: A Book Designed Especially for the General Student The present edition represents a thorough revision of the text in which, however, the original point of View has been strictly retained. The attempt has been made to have all statements accord strictly with the results of the latest and most reliable investigations, and the opportunity has been taken to introduce several topics of practical interest which had hitherto been omitted. Among these may be mentioned citric acid, the fulminates, the synthesis of india-rubber, and the chemistry of tannin. The chapter devoted to the com pounds of cyanogen has been brought more nearly in accord with modern technical practice, and that dealing with stereoisomerism has been largely rewritten in the interest of clearness. The author desires to express his thanks to all those who have called attention to inaccuracies or loose statements in the first edition, and hopes that he may rely upon them for similar favors in the future. He is especially indebted to his colleague, Professor W. T. Hall, for valuable assistance in reading the proofs. Book excerpt: Excerpt from General Principles of Organic Syntheses In the presentation of the subject in this volume, I have made rather extensive additions of new material, together with a general rearrangement of the entire subject-matter. Professor Alexeyeff, himself, has been deceased these several years, but his widow, Madame Alexeyeff, has very kindly given me authority to employ her husband's book in the preparation of the present volume. I have also to thank Madame Alexeyeff for her kindness in placing at my disposal the originals of her husband's book in Russian, which have been of very material assistance to me in the translation. For the latter purpose I have also made good use of Darzen's and Lefevre's French, translation of the original Russian. This book is intended for the general student of advanced organic chemistry, and deals only with the theory of the subject. It is not intended in any way as a laboratory manual for the preparation of organic compounds. Although there are a number of good books of the latter class available for the American or English student, yet I do not believe there is any book in English which covers quite the same ground as the present volume. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from d104-Book of Chemistry: Inorganic and Organic With Toxicology, for Students of Medicine, Pharmacy, Dentistry and Biology In the preface to the earlier editions of this book the author clearly specified its Scope and purpose. The general plan of the work remains unaltered, and may be indicated by the following extracts from the preface to the sixth edition. The main purpose of the section on inorganic chemistry is to supply certain data which shall serve as the text upon which to discuss the general principles of chemistry. It is the Opinion of the author that the object of chemical teaching should not be to lay up in the memory of the student a store of isolated facts, but rather to train his mind in those general principles by which he may reason out chemical problems for himself. If a teacher of chemistry to medical students aim merely to supply them with chemical facts, he and they are fore ordained to disappointment, but if the student be led to think in chemistry, ' the success and possible extent of the teaching, both in the fundamentals and in the superstructure of organic and physio logical chemistry, which can be attained, will be surprising and delightful to both instructor and pupil. And in this connection it must be said that the order of consideration of the several subjects which has been here followed, because it is logical, is not recommended in the teaching of students. The study should begin with that of a few elements and compounds, the consideration of the general physical and chemical principles being taken up as material for their discussion is supplied. The section on organic chemistry has been rearranged in the light of further information upon the relationship of substances, and somewhat extended, the prominence given to this branch of the subject the author believes to be justified, notwithstanding its intricacy and the impossibility of teaching it satisfactorily to those not well grounded in general chemistry, because of the intimate connection of organic chemistry with physiology and with modern pharmacy, and the impossibility of the comprehension of the problems of animal and pharmaceutical chemistry without the possession of an adequate knowledge of the principles of organic chemistry. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Organic Chemistry New: Revised Edition Our original intention was to write a small text-book on Organic Chemistry, based on the syllabus drawn up by the Science and Art Department, in the hope that it would be useful to students attending the elementary or advanced classes in the subject, and not without value to teachers as a handy book of reference. As, however, it soon became apparent that, by making comparatively few additions, the subject-matter might be made to include the facts usually dealt with in a course of about sixty lectures, the scope of the work was enlarged to this extent, so as at the same time to make it more useful to general students as an introduction to Organic Chemistry.
