Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Design and Construction of Metallic Bridges This book is based upon the ninth edition of "The Stresses in Bridge and Roof Trusses, Arched Ribs, and Suspension Bridges," by one of the Authors of this volume. That work, however, has been so thoroughly rewritten and such a large amount of new matter has been introduced that a new title has been adopted. It has been the intention of the Authors to prepare a comprehensive book covering all types of trusses used to a material extent in American bridge practice, or at least all trusses forming the basis of that practice. In conformity with this plan, the most advanced methods of stress computations, as well as those that are older, have been employed. The methods of influence lines and of deflections are used in the treatment of swing-bridges as well as the more common procedure with the theorem of three moments. There will also be found a short chapter setting forth the main features of the application of the principle of least work to the determination of stresses in trusses. As graphical methods of analysis have been completely set forth in the Authors' "The Graphic Method by Influence Lines for Bridge and Roof Computations," the graphic theory is but little used in this book. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Suspension Bridges and Cantilevers: Their Economics Proportions and Limiting Spans The term economic span will be used to designate the span at which the cost of a bridge would exceed the cap italized value of its usefulness to the builders. Although this is a problem of great practical significance, it does not lend itself to accurate treatment in any general manner owing to the large possible variations in local conditions, such as the magnitude and financial im portance of the traffic expected, the cost of real estate for land spans and approaches, and the difficulty encountered in locating suitable foundations. By adopting the most favorable assumptions for these varying conditions, a maximum value for the economic span may be established. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Design of Simple Steel Bridges IN writing this book my idea has been to revise and rearrange my former book, entitled Manual of Bridge Design, which has been used for some considerable time as a text-book on this subject by the Royal Engineers at the School of Military Engineering, Chatham. I have endeavoured to depart from the generality of text books, and to keep ever before the student the practical aim or object for which he is striving. I have also tried always to illustrate theoretical deductions and conclusions with examples from actual practice. The book is full of practical examples and illustrations, and contains many details of all sorts connected with bridge work. I have confined this work to simple bridges. On all hands text-books by celebrated men abound which investigate most thoroughly every conceivable kind of structure or girder, books which go into deep mathematics, and which at their conclusion do not venture to advise any particular course of action under any set circumstances, but leave the engineer to decide for himself. In this book I have therefore avoided any deep mathematics; a graphic solution of every problem is given where such a solution is useful, and I. Have in simple language endeavoured to advise or lay down a course of action in almost every case. And although the course of action recommended may sometimes be open to question as to whether it is the best, yet I think it is always good. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'A'ishah al-Ba'uniyyah (d. 923/1517) of Damascus was one of the great women scholars in Islamic history. A mystic and prolific poet and writer, 'A'ishah composed more works in Arabic than any other woman before the twentieth century. Yet despite her extraordinary literary and religious achievements, 'A'ishah al-Ba'uniyyah remains largely unknown. For the first time her key work, The Principles of Sufism, is available in English translation. The Principles of Sufism is a mystical guide book to help others on their spiritual path. She recounts the fundamental stages and states of the spiritual novice’s transformative journey, emphasizing the importance of embracing both human limitations and God’s limitless love. Drawing on lessons and readings from centuries-old Sufi tradition, 'A'ishah advises the seeker to repent of selfishness and turn to a sincere life of love. In addition to his lucid translation, Th. Emil Homerin provides an insightful introduction, notes and a glossary to 'A'ishah al-Ba'uniyyah’s remarkable account of the pursuit of mystical illumination. A bilingual Arabic-English edition.
