Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this third volume of travel tales, Rufus McGaugh, who, 2017, completed his 49-year quest to visit every country in the world, takes you back to some countries he revisited, takes you with him on his trek to six dangerous wanna-be countries in the Russian Caucasus (North Ossetia, Abkhazia, Ingushetia, Kabardino-Balkaria, Chechnya, and Dagestan), and tells you, in the title chapter, how he sometimes came close but managed to avoid drowning all over the world. In addition, he regales the reader with more anecdotes from his life as a middle-school teacher and offers further insights into the life and psyche of a Vietnam vet (particularly in a section entitled "How to Come Home from a War"). Anyone who has read and enjoyed Rufus' first two volumes (LONGITUDE AND LATITUDE, WITH ATTITUDE and JOYRIDING WITH A TERRORIST IN YEMEN) will certainly enjoy this book. And readers who haven't read those two volumes will be scurrying to pick them up after they finish DROWNING IN ALL SEVEN CONTINENTS.

Book Synopsis This Life That Is Ours by : Lauren Burdette
Download or read book This Life That Is Ours written by Lauren Burdette and published by Upper Room Books. This book was released on 2019-04-01 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Life That Is Ours offers 40 gentle meditations with guidance for reflection on the spiritual journey of motherhood. These practical, soul-affirming meditations nurture a mother's heart and spiritual life in a season fraught with overwhelm, exhaustion, and loss of identity. Through the lens of Burdette's real-life stories, the reader is invited to ponder her experience and to contemplate where God might be present. This book is divided into three sections. Reflections in the first section, "Becoming a Mother," explore the dynamics of being a new mother and the whirlwind experience of those early months and years. The second section, "Becoming Yourself," considers what it means to return home to yourself—to begin to find your identity again, both within the realm of motherhood and outside of it. The third section, "Becoming Holy," names the holy paradoxes of motherhood—the ways it can be both extraordinary and mundane, both gift and sacrifice—ultimately deepening one's experience of the holiness of motherhood. This Life That Is Ours includes an introduction, a preparatory guide for the reflective journey, a closing spiritual practice, and a conclusion. This book can be used in communities of mom groups, intergenerational groups of women, or spouse groups and would make a great gift for new mothers and mothers-to-be.

Book Synopsis Hollywood Highbrow by : Shyon Baumann
Download or read book Hollywood Highbrow written by Shyon Baumann and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2018-06-05 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today's moviegoers and critics generally consider some Hollywood products--even some blockbusters--to be legitimate works of art. But during the first half century of motion pictures very few Americans would have thought to call an American movie "art." Up through the 1950s, American movies were regarded as a form of popular, even lower-class, entertainment. By the 1960s and 1970s, however, viewers were regularly judging Hollywood films by artistic criteria previously applied only to high art forms. In Hollywood Highbrow, Shyon Baumann for the first time tells how social and cultural forces radically changed the public's perceptions of American movies just as those forces were radically changing the movies themselves. The development in the United States of an appreciation of film as an art was, Baumann shows, the product of large changes in Hollywood and American society as a whole. With the postwar rise of television, American movie audiences shrank dramatically and Hollywood responded by appealing to richer and more educated viewers. Around the same time, European ideas about the director as artist, an easing of censorship, and the development of art-house cinemas, film festivals, and the academic field of film studies encouraged the idea that some American movies--and not just European ones--deserved to be considered art.
