Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Animal Biology This book was made necessary by a radical change, several years ago, in the introductory course in zoology at the University of Michigan. When the dissection of animal types in the laboratory was replaced by exercises bearing on the larger questions and fundamental principles of biology, a textbook treating almost exclusively of the morphology of representatives of the phyla, classes and orders was obviously of small use. In the absence of any text which appeared to fit the new departure, a book was provided in temporary form by the organizers of the course. Until now the temporary volume has sufficed. Were a textbook based on principles useful only in a course whose laboratory exercises were also based on principles, the authors would not now feel impelled to make the volume available to others. They have accepted, however, the judgment of other biologists who find that even in courses in which types are dissected in the laboratory, the textbook should deal largely with biological principles, and with classification and the morphology of types only as these subjects fit themselves into the principles of the science as a whole. The best teachers have, in fact, long been presenting to their students much of the material of this book in lectures and recitations. In the hope that a textbook based on principles will be thought better than those now commonly in use, even for courses which retain the dissection of types in the laboratory, this volume is presented to the teachers of zoology and biology. It is believed, furthermore, that the general reader will find in its pages much that is of interest. Illustrations have been selected with a view to making the book intelligible, not only to college students, but to persons who are not pursuing laboratory work. The authors have made no attempt to write in popular style for the benefit of such readers, but have endeavored to make the exposition clear and in the main specific. They prefer to believe that the general reader is willing to labor for his acquisitions so long as his effort promises to yield commensurate results. Advice and criticism have been freely asked and given in the preparation of many of the chapters. The authors desire to mention in particular Professors H. H. Bartlett and J. F. Shepard, Dr. L.V. Heilbrunn, Dr. O. M. Cope, Dr. P. O. Okkelberg and Margaret B. Shull. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Laboratory Directions in Principles of Animal Biology The course for which this book of laboratory directions was prepared is a recognition of the growth which the science of Zoology has made in the past several decades. No longer a purely morphological subject, zoology is not in the opinion of the authors properly treated in a purely morphological course. Good teachers have long recognized that dis section and classification alone would not make a zoologist, and have striven in lectures and recitations to provide the larger outlook which the science has come to possess. But this recognition seems hardly adequate. If in the lectures and recitations due attention is paid to the type dis sections in the laboratory, morphology can scarcely avoid receiving an emphasis it does not deserve. If to avoid this over-emphasis the recita tions and lectures are devoted exclusively to evolution, distribution, ecology, genetics, etc., the laboratory exercises and recitations must seem unrelated to one another. Recitations and laboratory work thus become two courses Which the student pursues simultaneously. The only solution has appeared to be to make the laboratory work itself bear on the large questions of biology. The laboratory work may thus have a balance of its own, it does not need to be averaged with the recitations. This book contains directions for first-hand exercises which we believe have the emphasis properly placed. Morphology still receives more attention than any other division of the subject, but it is nearly everywhere directed to some end Which is not merely structure. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Animal Biology This volume is intended as an introduction to the elements of animal biology for the use of students in the high school. The cut-and-dried method of exposition which is so commonly found in text - books and which so frequently deprives them of all traces of stimulating quality has been avoided so far as was deemed compatible with the presentation of such subject matter as a text-book should contain. Although the book would best fulfil its purpose if read in connection with laboratory work, I have not included directions for such work, partly be cause it would add considerably to the bulk of the volume, but chiefly because so many teachers nowadays prefer to make laboratory outlines of their own. The order in which the main topics are treated is essen tially like that which is followed in several of the best recent text-books. The general experience of teachers of biology has shown it to be eminently desirable that the student should possess a general knowledge of the animal kingdom as a preparation for the study of physiology. The section on the elements of physiology has therefore been placed after the part devoted to a survey of the principal groups of animals. Rather more than the usual amount of attention is given to the role of bacteria in causing disease, and to the way in which diseases are spread and how they may be avoided. Book excerpt: Excerpt from General Principles Zoology But meanwhile the subject of Zoology has widened 1, for, apart from its relations to man, Zoology has to explain the organization of animals and their relations to one another. This is a rich field for scientific activity; its enormous range is a consequence, on the one hand, of the well-nigh exhaustless variety of animal organization, and, on the other hand, of the different points of view from which the zoologist enters upon the solution of his problem. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A d104-Book of the Principles of Animal Histology A text-book of histology must have some very definite reason for appearing at the present time when so many good books bearing that title have appeared in the last few years and promise to continue to appear. These books, however, with practically no exceptions, have been intended for the medical school, and with this in view have been restricted to the histology of man, as a main theme, with more or less reference to other animals, principally the mammals. Such works have not filled the need of a text-book of general histology for the college course, a book that treats of the principles of the subject. They do not show what the animal cell is capable of as a builder of tissues which enable the organism to make use, more or less completely, of nearly all the known forces of physics and many of those of chemistry. This can be realized when we consider that they do not even mention such tissues as produce electricity, light, gases, and many other things. And again much is lost in the college course in histology by the fact that, of those tissues which are treated of in the medical histology, the complete significance is lost by not seeing their earlier representation and variation in the lower forms. This volume has been written to secure a work that covers the general field of histology and is not restricted in the main to human and mammalian forms. It is intended to be a work that teaches general principles and teaches histology as a pure science and for its own sake. It is believed that it will serve as a broad foundation for future studies of morphology and embryology as well as for the medical studies. As to method of treatment, it has seemed convenient to treat each part, with some exceptions, by writing a general discussion of the subject, and following this discussion with detailed laboratory descriptions of types of the tissue, abundantly illustrated with good pen and ink drawings. Such concrete examples have been selected from readily accessible materials in most cases, and the proper procedure for securing and preparing the materials has been indicated in small type at the end of each chapter in many cases. In the last part of the book a chapter on technique will be found, giving a short statement of principles and a guide for some concrete practice. In some chapters the seminar work is not separated from the statements of principles. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
