Book excerpt: So I Hit Him is an extremely powerful memoir that will shock many people, yet is intensely inspirational. Born in a former workhouse hospital in Manchester, England with multiple disabilities and not expected to survive, Michael was placed in care almost from birth. By the time he was 17, he had been placed in over 30 institutions and had suffered every manner of physical, emotional and sexual abuse and neglect. His Asperger’s became the key to his survival in a hostile world, enabling him to endure punishment, deprivation and emotional conflict. His rage and frustration had created a man who used violence to deal with most situations in life. Readers: be prepared to suspend judgment as you read an inspirational story. Michael’s strong will to live and learn enabled him to survive not only his time in care, but also his forced migration, as a child, to Australia, and his later alcohol addiction. It also enabled him to finally succeed in his ultimate goals of getting an education and helping youth in trouble. So I Hit Him is the compelling story of a man who, despite all odds being against him, still says he has had a lucky life.

Book excerpt: In the Western imagination, the Middle Eastern harem was a place of sex, debauchery, slavery, miscegenation, power, riches, and sheer abandon. But for the women and children who actually inhabited this realm of the imperial palace, the reality was vastly different. In this collection of translated memoirs, three women who lived in the Ottoman imperial harem in Istanbul between 1876 and 1924 offer a fascinating glimpse "behind the veil" into the lives of Muslim palace women of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The memoirists are Filizten, concubine to Sultan Murad V; Princess Ayse, daughter of Sultan Abdulhamid II; and Safiye, a schoolteacher who instructed the grandchildren and harem ladies of Sultan Mehmed V. Their recollections of the Ottoman harem reveal the rigid protocol and hierarchy that governed the lives of the imperial family and concubines, as well as the hundreds of slave women and black eunuchs in service to them. The memoirists show that, far from being a place of debauchery, the harem was a family home in which polite and refined behavior prevailed. Douglas Brookes explains the social structure of the nineteenth-century Ottoman palace harem in his introduction. These three memoirs, written across a half century and by women of differing social classes, offer a fuller and richer portrait of the Ottoman imperial harem than has ever before been available in English.

This biography encompasses the life of Prince William of Wales, from the moment of his birth in 1982, through to his current status as an ambassador of the Royal Family and one of the most popular celebrities in his home country and around the globe. In Prince William, experienced biography author Joann F. Price details the prince's life thus far, including his experiences at the prestigious Eton College and the University of St. Andrews in Scotland, his global travels with his glamorous and beloved mother and brother, his military service, and his engagement and upcoming wedding to longtime girlfriend Kate Middleton. The book also reveals important aspects of the Royal Family and explains how being born into it—an integral and highly influential part of the history of the British Empire—has molded this man's life. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charles III was one of the kings of Spain during the Bourbon dynasty who ruled from 1759 to 1788. He was born in Madrid, Spain, in 1716 and lived a privileged life as the second son of King Philip V. Charles III was educated by the Jesuits and was trained to become a military officer, but he later decided to pursue a career in public administration. He served as governor of Naples and Sicily, where he implemented policies aimed at improving the economy, reducing corruption, and promoting agriculture. When Charles III became king of Spain in 1759 at the age of 42, he inherited a country that was in dire economic, political, and social crisis. He embarked on a series of reforms that aimed to modernize Spain and bring it in line with the European powers. Charles implemented policies aimed at improving public health, reducing poverty, and promoting education. He also reorganized the Spanish army, established a new system of taxation, and supported scientific research. Charles III left a lasting legacy as a reformer who modernized Spain, restored its economic and military power, and improved the welfare of its people.
