Book excerpt: Prince Shōtoku's Commentary on the Śrīmālā Sutra is a translation of the Shōmangyō-gisho (Commentary on the Śrīmālādevīsimhanāda-sūtra), one of three Buddhist commentaries written in classical Chinese that have been attributed to Japan's Prince Shōtoku (574-622). A master politician and shining figure in the imperial line, Prince Shōtoku played a leading role in government and with promoting diplomatic, cultural, and religious contacts with China and Korea. He is also remembered as a devout practitioner and generous patron of Buddhism who studied Buddhist doctrine under the instruction of continental tutors, and offered lectures at court on the Lotus Sutra and the Śrīmālādevī-sūtra, a key early Mahayana sutra that espouses the tathāgatagarbha, the "seed" of enlightenment said to be present in all sentient beings, and the ekayāna, or "One Vehicle." Shōtoku's lectures on the Śrīmālādevī-sūtra are believed to be the source of the Shōmangyō-gisho, a text that has had undeniable influence in both premodern and modern forms of Japanese Buddhism, and which continues to be a source of inspiration for many.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an anthology of passages gathered from the leading monks and teachers of the Pure Land, or Shin, school of Buddhist teaching. Extending from the foundational texts and first interpreters in the 4th century, to Rennyo in the 15th century, Professor Bloom’s selections trace the development of Shin Buddhist teaching from monastic visualization practices to the widely popular path to salvation through faith in, and recitation of, the name of Amida Buddha. The collection features a foreword by Kenneth K. Tanaka and an insightful introduction by renowned scholar and editor, Alfred Bloom, whose selected passages have been arranged topically for easy reference on issues of Pure Land teaching. The key interpreters featured are the Seven Great Teachers from India, China, and Japan (Nagarjuna, Vasubandhu; T’an-luan, Tao-ch’o, Shan-tao; Genshin, Honen), selected as doctrinal authorities by Shinran (1173-1263), the founder of the Japanese Pure Land sect.

Book excerpt: The present Glossary of Buddhism is devoted to this inner pilgrimage, as it attempts to make the treasures of Maitreya’s Tower accessible to the greatest number. Thus, over the last several years, the editors have canvassed some 30 Buddhist dictionaries and encyclopedias and over 350 books on Buddhism, published in different languages, extracting what they believe are key terms and concepts useful to the average student of Buddhism. Although the whole range of Buddhist thought is covered, special empha sis is placed on the Pure Land and Hua-yen (Avatamsaka) world views, the so-called Schools of Existence (q.v.). An important aspect of this Glossary is its extensive cross-referencing of key Buddhist terms, a feature which we believe is particularly useful at this stage of development of Buddhist terminology in the West.

Book excerpt: A cross-cultural encyclopedia of the most significant holy people in history, examining why people in a wide range of religious traditions throughout the world have been regarded as divinely inspired. The first reference on the subject to span all the world's major religions, Holy People of the World: A Cross-Cultural Encyclopedia examines the impact of individuals who, through personal charisma and inspirational deeds, served both as glorious examples of human potential and as envoys for the divine. Holy People of the World contains nearly 1,100 biographical sketches of venerated men and women. Written by religious studies experts and historians, each article focuses on the basic question: How did this person come to be regarded as holy? In addition, the encyclopedia features 20 survey articles on views of holy people in the major religious traditions such as Islam, Buddhism, and African religions, as well as 64 comparative articles on aspects of holiness and veneration across cultures such as awakening and conversion experiences, heredity, gender, asceticism, and persecution. Whether exploring by religion, culture, or historic period, this extensively cross-referenced resource offers a wealth of insights into one of the most revealing--and least explored--common denominators of spiritual traditions. Approximately 1,200 entries including biographical sketches of holy men and women, plus 20 overview articles and 64 comparative essays 270 contributors include scholars from 20 countries--all leading authorities on the individuals and religions they write about Hundreds of historical photographs, illustrations, and paintings depicting holy men and women End-of entry bibliographic citations to guide readers to further sources on each topic Exhaustive subject index Rich cross-referencing structure that aids navigation among related entries
