Book Synopsis Prince Rupert's Drop by : Jane Draycott
Download or read book Prince Rupert's Drop written by Jane Draycott and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1999 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prince Rupert's drop, a rare curiosity of the glass-making process, is a tear of glass at once resilient and fragile which explodes dramatically when the glass shatters. This tension--between the beauty and sense of almost inevitable loss inherent in the things we admire most--is a key to many of the poems in Jane Draycott's first full-length solo collection. The long central poem, "Braving the Dark," written after her brother's death from AIDS at the age of 30, is particularly fraught with this tension. Dramatic, quietly surreal, the poems in Prince Rupert's Drop hide a sense of decay and transience beneath the energy of their detail.

Book Synopsis The Black Legend of Prince Rupert's Dog by : Mark Stoyle
Download or read book The Black Legend of Prince Rupert's Dog written by Mark Stoyle and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This compelling book from Mark Stoyle sets out to uncover the true history of Boy, the canine companion of Charles I's famous nephew, Prince Rupert. Like his master, Boy was held to possess dark powers and was elevated to celebrity status as a 'dog-witch' during the English Civil War of 1642-46. Many scholars have remarked upon the fantastical rumours which circulated about Prince Rupert and his dog, but no-one has investigated the source of these rumours, or explored how the supernatural element of the prince's public image developed over time. In this book, Mark Stoyle recounts the occult stories which centred upon Prince Rupert and his dog. He shows how those stories grew out of, and contributed to, the changing pattern of witch-belief in England during the Civil War. Shortlisted for the Folklore Society's Katharine Briggs Award 2012.

Book Synopsis Photoelasticity of Glass by : Hillar Aben
Download or read book Photoelasticity of Glass written by Hillar Aben and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Glass is the oldest man-made material. Its invention about five thousand years ago should be considered as one of the crucial events in the history of mankind. Glass has given man the possibility to have daylight in his protected living environment and to compensate the defects of his sight. Glass containers and tableware have played and still play an important role in man's everyday life. Glass elements in microscopes and telescopes have given us the possibility to learn the secrets of micro- and macrocosm. Glass participates in the most sophisticated technologies: glass fibers have caused a revolution in telecommunication, glass is used as a material for many modern electronic devices. Although nowadays plastics often make a strong competition to glass, for many applications glass is still the best material due to its specific properties - its hardness, good transparency, resistance to chemicals, the easiness to shape glass articles, feasibility to change the composition of the glass in order to meet new specific demands, etc. Two peculiarities of glass should be pointed out. The first is the fragility of glass - it breaks easily due to tensile stresses. The second is the fact that in every glass item there exist residual stresses due to the complicated technological process during which glass from the state of a viscous liquid at high temperature turns into solid state, while cooled down.

As described in over 100 chapters and illustrated with 1100 figures, the practical importance of glass has increased over the ages since it was first man-made four millennia ago. The old-age glass vessels and window and stained glass now coexist with new high-tech products that include for example optical fibers, thin films, metallic, bioactive and hybrid organic-inorganic glasses, amorphous ices or all-solid-state batteries. In the form of scholarly introductions, the Encyclopedia chapters have been written by 151 noted experts working in 23 countries. They present at a consistent level and in a self-consistent manner these industrial, technological, scientific, historical and cultural aspects. Addressing the most recent fundamental advances in glass science and technology, as well as rapidly developing topics such as extra-terrestrial or biogenic glasses, this important guide: Begins with industrial glassmaking Turns to glass structure and to physical, transport and chemical properties Deals with interactions with light, inorganic glass families and organically related glasses Considers a variety of environmental and energy issues And concludes with a long section on the history of glass as a material from Prehistory to modern glass science The Encyclopedia of Glass Science, Technology, History, and Culture has been written not only for glass scientists and engineers in academia and industry, but also for material scientists as well as for art and industry historians. It represents a must-have, comprehensive guide to the myriad aspects this truly outstanding state of matter.
