Book excerpt: “Miss Tomasson comes of an old Derbyshire family connected with that of the last Englishman to die for the Stuarts-Charles Radclyffe, titular Earl of Derwentwater. He was captured at sea on his way to Montrose, and thereby failed to join the Prince's Standard. Perhaps it was in an endeavour to repair this omission that Miss Tomasson attended the Bi-Centenary of the Raising of the Standard at Glenfinnan in 1945. Thereafter she joined " The Forty-Five Association" and began to undertake historical research work in Perthshire. In the Charter Room at Blair Castle her adventures in discovery took a dramatic turn; for she brought to light a bundle of notes written by Lord George Murray himself, and intended for a history of the '45, as well as several hundred letters written by him and by his brother, the Jacobite Duke of Atholl. Miss Tomasson prepared then to write a biography of this " Duke William," but the dominating personality of Lord George kept thrusting itself through all the mass of books and documents she consulted, so that in the end (somewhat to her annoyance) it was of Lord George that she wrote. This is History, but alive and thrilling. The author has studied the lives and characteristics of each of the Prince's eighteen councillors and of many lesser officers. The characters speak for themselves and the campaign is described from their point of view. Their accounts of marches, sieges and battles have been pieced together with care and after a close inspection of the ground over which the armies fought. The Earl of Perth, in his Foreword, underlines the thoroughness with which the late Duke of Atholl (to whom the book is dedicated) and Miss Tomasson refought these battles—particularly Culloden—with models and scale plans and much friendly argument. Certain things emerge clearly from this book: the loyalty of the clansmen; the high character of the Chiefs and the leading Scottish officers, and their unswerving loyalty to the son of their rightful King; and the outstanding ability of that most controversial character, Lord George Murray.”-Publisher.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A collection of essays reflecting on Edgar as friend and colleague and on the subjects of his scholarly work Citizen-Scholar comprises essays written in honor of Walter Edgar, South Carolina's preeminent historian and founding director of the University of South Carolina (USC) Institute for Southern Studies. In the opening overview of Edgar's impressive academic career, editor Robert H. Brinkmeyer, Jr., discusses Edgar's role as the Palmetto State's omnipresent public historian, radio program host, author of the landmark South Carolina: A History, and editor of The South Carolina Encyclopedia. The former George Washington Distinguished Professor of History, Claude Henry Neuffer Chair of Southern Studies, and Louise Fry Scudder Professor, Edgar has been recognized with inductions into the South Carolina Hall of Fame and the South Carolina Higher Education Hall of Fame and has received the South Carolina Order of the Palmetto and the South Carolina Governor's Award in the Humanities. The first section of Citizen-Scholar features personal essays about Edgar and his legacy from author and historian Winston Groom, USC vice president Mary Anne Fitzpatrick, USC president Harris Pastides, and historian Mark M. Smith. The essays that follow are written by some of the nation's most renowned scholars of southern history and culture including Charles Joyner, Andrew H. Myers, Barbara L. Bellows, John M. Sherrer III, Orville Vernon Burton, Bernard E. Powers Jr., Peter A. Coclanis, John McCardell, James C. Cobb, Amy Thompson McCandless, and Lacy K. Ford, Jr. The second section of the collection includes essays spanning a range of regional, national, and international topics, all associated with Edgar's research. These essays were written as a tribute to Edgar, both as a historian and as a public scholar, a man actively involved in his profession as well as in his community, both locally and statewide.

Book excerpt: New York Times bestseller SHE LOST EVERYTHING SHE LOVED. HE HAD EVERYTHING SHE NEEDED. BUT COULD SHE FIND THE COURAGE TO TRUST HIM? Stepping from a battered coach on a rainy April eve, newly widowed Elisabeth Kerr must begin again, without husband or title, property or fortune. She is unafraid of work and gifted with a needle, but how will she stitch together the tattered remnants of her life? And who will mend her heart, torn asunder by betrayal and deception? Elisabeth has not come to Selkirk alone. Her mother-in-law, Marjory Kerr, is a woman undone, having buried her husband, her sons, and any promise of grandchildren. Dependent upon a distant cousin with meager resources, Marjory dreads the future almost as much as she regrets the past. Yet joy still comes knocking, and hope is often found in unexpected places. Then a worthy hero steps forward, rekindling a spark of hope. Will he risk his reputation to defend two women labeled as traitors to the Crown? Or will a wealthy beauty, untainted by scandal, capture his affections? The heartrending journey of the Kerr women comes to a glorious finish in Mine Is the Night, a sparkling gem of redemption and restoration set in eighteenth-century Scotland.
