Download or read book Prince written by Matt Thorne and published by Agate Publishing. This book was released on 2023-08-22 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The newest, most updated book on Prince available today—now updated with information about the afterlife of his work following his untimely death. Famously reticent and perennially controversial, Prince was one of the few music superstars who remained, largely, an enigma—even up to his premature death on April 21, 2016. A fixture of the pop canon, Prince is widely held to be the greatest musician of his generation and will undoubtedly remain an inspiring and singular talent. This revised and updated second edition of this meticulously researched biography is the most comprehensive work on Prince yet published. Unlike other Prince books, this one eschews speculation into the artist's highly guarded private life and instead focuses deep and sustained attention exactly where it should be: on his work. Acclaimed British novelist and critic Matt Thorne draws on years of research and dozens of interviews with Prince's intimate associates (many of whom have never spoken on record before) to examine every phase of the musician's 35-year career, including nearly every song—released and unreleased—that Prince has recorded. Originally released in the UK in 2012, this revised and updated second US edition of Prince includes updated content regarding work released and made available after the artist’s death.. This astonishingly rich, almost encyclopedic biography is a must-have for any serious fan of Prince.

Using a diverse array of primary and secondary sources, letters, diary entries, and interviews with descendants, Vovk provides an in-depth look into the lives of four extraordinary women who stayed faithfully at their husbands sides throughout the cataclysm of the First World War and the tumultuous years that followed. At the centers of these four great monarchies were Augusta Victoria, Germanys revered empress whose unwavering commitment to her bombastic husband made her a national icon; Mary, whose Cinderella story and immense personal strength made her the soul of the British monarchy through some of its greatest crises; Alexandra, the ill-fated tsarina who helped topple the Russian monarchy through her ineffective rule; and Zita, the resolute empress of Austria whose story of loss and exile captivated the worlds attention for seven decades. Imperial Requiem shares the fascinating story of four princesses who married for love, graced imperial thrones, and watched as their beloved worlds were torn apart by war, revolution, heartache, and loss.
Book Synopsis Royalty and Diplomacy in Europe, 1890-1914 by : Roderick R. McLean
Download or read book Royalty and Diplomacy in Europe, 1890-1914 written by Roderick R. McLean and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2007-07-26 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 2001 book examines the diplomatic role of royal families in the era before the outbreak of the First World War. It argues that previous historians have neglected for political reasons the important political and diplomatic role of monarchs during the period. Particular attention is given to the Prusso-German, Russian and British monarchies. The Prusso-German and Russian monarchies were central in their countries' diplomacy and foreign policy, principally as a result of their control over diplomatic and political appointments. However, the book also argues that the British monarchy played a much more influential role in British diplomacy than has been accepted hitherto by historians. Individual themes examined include relations between Kaiser Wilhelm II and Tsar Nicholas II, the political significance of the ill-feeling between Wilhelm II and his uncle King Edward VII, the role of Edward VII in British diplomacy, and the impact of royal visits on pre-1914 Anglo-German relations.

Book Synopsis Promoters, Patriots, and Partisans by : Martin Brook Taylor
Download or read book Promoters, Patriots, and Partisans written by Martin Brook Taylor and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1989-01-01 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the nineteenth-century, the writing of history in English-speaking Canada changed from promotional efforts by amateurs to an academically-based discipline. Professor Taylor charts this transition in a comprehensive history. The early historians - the promoters of the title - sought to further their own interests through exxagerated accounts of a particular colony to which they had developed a transient attachment. Eventually this group was replaced by patriots, whose writing was influenced by loyalty to the land of their brith and residence. This second generation of historians attempted both to defend their respective colonies by explaining away past disappointments and to fit events into a predicitve pattern of progress and development. In the process, they established distinctive identities for each of the British North American colonies. Eventually a confrontation occurred between those who saw Canada as a nation and those whose traditions and vistas were provincial in emphasis. Ultimately the former prevailed, only to find the present and future too complex and too ominous to understand. Historians ssubsequently lost their sense of purpose and direction and fell into partisan disagreement or pessimistic nostalgia. This abandonment of their role paved the way for the new, professional breed of historian as the twentieth century opened. In the course of his analysis, Taylor considers a number of key issues about the writing of history: the kind of people who undertake it and their motivation for doing so, the intended and actual effects of their work, its influence on subsequent historical writing, and the development of uniform and accepted standards of professional practice.
Book Synopsis COOK'S LEGACY - FURS, DISCOVERY AND CONFLICT by : Winifred Dixon
Download or read book COOK'S LEGACY - FURS, DISCOVERY AND CONFLICT written by Winifred Dixon and published by Troubador Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2019 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Captain James Cook was an outstanding example of navigation and seamanship, and together with the officers and men under his command, circumnavigated the globe three times. One of these became Captain George Dixon. In this unique biography, the author - who hopes the Captain to be an ancestor of her late husband - traces Dixon’s journey to discover the Northwest Passage as he followed Cook, continuing to when he was sent on a trading voyage to deal in furs on the Northwest Coast. Well-researched, the story is told in multiple viewpoints with detailed historical observations woven throughout. Marrying with this is the author’s own experience of visiting the places that James Cook and George Dixon would have seen, as she and her daughter travelled to Canada and by ship to Vancouver Island, the Queen Charlotte Islands and the Northwest Coast and on to Juneaux Alaska. As for George, the author hasn’t proven a link yet, but there’s always tomorrow! The book will be enjoyed by maritime history enthusiasts as well as readers who enjoy sailing adventures.
