Book excerpt: For pre-service teachers at three levels of education - early childhood, primary and secondary. Learning to teach is a difficult and complex activity. It is a process that requires pre-service teachers to chart uniquely personal pathways to becoming effective teachers, pathways that are littered with complex and demanding challenges that vary across time, place and person. This book offers pre-service teachers a novel way of addressing those challenges. It reveals what pre-service teachers need to do to transform their preconceived notions about teaching, acquired during twelve years as students in schools, into the practical theories that guide the classroom teaching of highly effective practitioners. It presents examples of the knowledge and theories of actual teachers, both pre-service and in-service; activities for explicating, reviewing and re-building knowledge and theories; and research-based guidelines to effect change while learning to teach. This book will contribute to making the task of learning to teach much more comprehensible to prospective teachers, while empowering students to take a more significant role in their own professional development.

Book excerpt: Educating dual language learners (DLLs) and English learners (ELs) effectively is a national challenge with consequences both for individuals and for American society. Despite their linguistic, cognitive, and social potential, many ELsâ€"who account for more than 9 percent of enrollment in grades K-12 in U.S. schoolsâ€"are struggling to meet the requirements for academic success, and their prospects for success in postsecondary education and in the workforce are jeopardized as a result. Promoting the Educational Success of Children and Youth Learning English: Promising Futures examines how evidence based on research relevant to the development of DLLs/ELs from birth to age 21 can inform education and health policies and related practices that can result in better educational outcomes. This report makes recommendations for policy, practice, and research and data collection focused on addressing the challenges in caring for and educating DLLs/ELs from birth to grade 12.

Book excerpt: In a book dedicated to those who endured Hurricane Katrina, and prefaced by a "Be all you can be" speech given to her campus's Student Government Association, Duhon-Sells (dean, College of Education, Southern U.) and fellow New Orleans' academics introduce children's voices collected by personnel who counseled children at an area middle school. In the context of the literature on the effects of disasters on communities and children, contributors --most affected themselves--assess the resulting challenges and responses of area schools (e.g., home distance learning, lessons plans incorporating the new demographics). The last chapter is devoted to healthcare aspects. Illustrations include memorable scenes from during and after the hurricanes. Not indexed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This pamphlet describes the process of beginning to use portfolios in an elementary teacher training program. It defines the concept of portfolios and provides a rationale for their use in teacher education programs. Portfolios are suggested for use in preservice teacher education in three ways: to evaluate the preservice teacher education program, to enhance and document active student learning, and to provide students with a personal marketing tool after graduation. The pamphlet describes the portfolio process, including the six steps involved in adopting portfolios for documenting professional growth in a teacher education program: adopt a philosophy statement; decide on outcomes that reflect the teacher education program; determine the purposes for using portfolios; select specific types of artifacts that students will include; decide a process for implementing portfolios; and write a manual to serve as a guide for faculty and students. The pamphlet concludes that the portfolio development process has energized faculty to continue their best efforts in facilitating the professional growth of future teachers. (JDD)

Book excerpt: All educators in teacher education want to know what factors contribute to the academic success of undergraduate education majors or pre-service teachers. Teacher educators of eight universities across the state of South Carolina were determined to find out. This compilation is a result of their inquiry. The conclusions of this book are drawn from the contributors and each chapter helps expand teacher educator readers’ understanding and informs their practice as they work with initial certification students in educator preparation. A Research Perspective promotes the academic success of pre-service teachers by exploring common research questions posed to education majors of the eight universities in South Carolina. Ranging from historically Black to predominately White, from private to public universities across the state, these institutions serve a diverse body of students who described some insightful contributing factors and challenges to their success. The case scenario begins each chapter that provides contextual snapshots of the myriad choices and obstacles faced by pre-service teachers; the research narratives offer insightful analysis for teacher educators. Though written from the perspective of South Carolina, the lessons learned and recommendations for teacher education are relevant to any state. This is a must-read for all teacher educators interested in student success. This book is most interesting to members of teacher education organizations, especially the Association of Teacher Educators (ATE) and its 41 state and regional affiliates, including South Carolina Association of Teacher Educators (SCATE) and Southeast Regional Association of Teacher Educators (SRATE). It also has wide appeal to members of other professional organizations, such as National Association for Multicultural Education (NAME) and American Educational Research Association (AERA). Finally, it’s a good choice for professional learning communities of district personnel and classroom teachers since it provides insights that will strengthen mentoring and support systems provided to student teachers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper is a report on the development of a digital portfolio system for a teacher education program. The development of the system was based upon a three-year comparative case study of four principals representing rural and urban schools and included pre-kindergarten through 12th grade levels in a Midwestern state. The research generated information to create a computer program to assist undergraduates with the construction of their professional teaching portfolios. As students used the computer program, portfolios were being constructed in many electronic formats. The identification of one accessible electronic system became necessary for student and program evaluation and for accreditation purposes. As a result, a development and a professional portfolio were created within a digital system. The system includes rubrics which connect the standards and the aggregation of data. This paper identifies the research, problem solving process, initiation, and ongoing refinement of a digital portfolio system for use with teacher job search, student evaluation, teacher education program improvement, and aggregation of data for accreditation purposes.
