It is obvious that the notes in staccato accompaniment must be light and delicate, and not strong enough to interfere with the melody which they accompany. When they are required to be soft, and yet bright in tone and distinctly articulated, which is often the case, they must be played with a steady hand, the fingers being held in a bent position and with little or no movement of the joints, and the hand lifted from the key with great rapidity, but to a very short distance. This movement, which is very slight though quick, comes from the action of the elbow-joint, and the tone produced is crisp and short, with very little percussion. This touch is suitable for such passages as the bass in the Scherzo of Beethoven's Sonata in E flat, op. 31, No. 3, or the chords of the right hand in the 108th and following bars of the first movement of the same. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Art of Pianoforte Playing 1n offering to the public a short Treatise on the Theory and Practice of pianoforte-playing, it has been my endeavour to write in the plainest, the most concise, and the most practical manner. Giving the result of my long experience as a teacher, I have included in this work those phases of pianoforte playing which, occurring daily, may be considered as forming the basis of a good, solid, and correct execution. The position of the. Performer at the instrument - the method of producing, by means of a good, distinct touch, a full and rich, yet delicate and subtle tone - the practical manner of studying and playing the scales - the execution of the shake - the chords, firm and broken - the double passages part-playing - all these are essential constituents of an efficient and artistic performance; and to explain these different matters in a Clear yet not too elaborate manner, has been my endeavour throughout. This book is intended for the use of pupil and teacher alike. The pupil may, I think, learn from it many matters for whose elucidation the teacher finds no time during the lesson; while to the teacher the little work may prove useful as a kind of text-book, which he must. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The First Principles of Pianoforte Playing: Being an Extract From the Author's "the Act of Touch," Designed for School Use, and Including Two New Chapters Directions for Learners and Advice to Teachers This little work is issued to render the teachings of The Act of Touch better available for the School-room and Class room, and as a d104-book for Examinations. It is intended as an Introduction to the subject. The supreme importance of early training in this subject the mechanism of playing - need not be further dilated upon here, since it has been proved that Agility itself, and all those contrasts of Tone and Duration which enable us musically to express ourselves through the Pianoforte, depend immediately on the proper fulfilment of the laws of Touch, the polemics of which have been amply dealt with in The Act of Touch. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Burrowes Piano Primer, Containing the Rudiments of Music Adapted for Either Private Tuition or Teaching in Classes, Together With a Guide to Practice The conciseness and clarity of burrowes' primer (it is, rather, a. Catechism), together with its convenient size and low price, have given it a large sphere of usefulness. Approximately a million copies have been sold, and the little book is in the most active use. The present edition is based on the many previous editions; but while there are many changes, corrections, and additions in this new edition, the editor has been careful to preserve the original text and contents as far as possible. It is still Burrowes' Primer; it is still a Piano Primer. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Technique and Expression in Pianoforte Playing These suggestions relate to both the mechanical and intellectual sides of the study of pianoforte-playing, or, briefly, to Technique and Expression, the chief matters implied by the first of these terms being the production of various qualities of tone, the choice of suitable fingering, and the best methods of attacking certain difficulties; while the second, which may perhaps be more aptly designated the means of expression, includes rhythm, phrasing. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Palmer's Piano Primer: A Systematic and Clear Explanation of the Fundamental Principles of Piano-Forte Playing, Designed for the Assistance of Teachers, and as a Text-Book for Classes or Private Pupils, Containing a Scientific Exposition of the Rudiments of Musical Notation It is recommended that the pupils be required to commit the questions and answers to memory, (a few at each lesson, 5 to 20, according to the capacity for memorizing) and recite them at the beginning of the next lesson; this would, in the course of six or twelve months, place much important information at the pupil's disposal, thereby saving the teacher's valuable time for those things which cannot be learned from books, while the learners would stand on a broader foundation of musical knowledge, with no perceptible interference with the time of lessons; in fact, it would in the end save their time, for, with increased knowledge, they will be able to comprehend the explanations and elucidations of the teacher much more rapidly, thereby insuring greater advancement in the same length of time.
