Book Synopsis Language, Literacy and Learning in Primary Schools by : Olatunde A. Adekola
Download or read book Language, Literacy and Learning in Primary Schools written by Olatunde A. Adekola and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2007 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Language, Literacy, and Learning in Primary Schools is a synthesis of the findings arising from four years of policy research and development in Nigeria's primary schools that focused on the gap between what teachers should know and be able to do, and the realities of teaching and learning in classrooms. It begins by critically examining the outcomes of primary schooling as measured by learning achievement results from national assessments, and by identifying some core learning problems for Nigerian primary school children. It reviews the findings from recent research reports that studied teaching and learning processes in primary school classrooms, and it identifies the pedagogical issues in primary classrooms that contribute to poor learning achievements. This report describes a research and development program that set out to improve teaching and learning in core learning skill areas of the curriculum. This study identifies priority areas for teachers' professional development. It suggests a policy framework for the continuing professional development of primary school teachers, including the initial preparation of teachers and their induction into teaching. It proposes medium and long-term strategies to bring about the desired changes in teaching and learning through school-based approaches to teacher development.
Book Synopsis Education Inputs in Uganda by : Harriet Nannyonjo
Download or read book Education Inputs in Uganda written by Harriet Nannyonjo and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report is based on a study prompted by the need for improved effectiveness in the use of education resources in Uganda. Uganda's problem with increasing resource constraints for education is common in many developing countries and the lessons learned in this study may be of broad interest. Currently, Uganda allocates over 31 percent of its discretionary recurrent expenditure to education and 67 percent of this is allocated to primary education. Given increasing pressures on the budgets, there is need to implement strategies focusing on those inputs most likely to improve student learning. A major impediment to rational decision making in this area is lack of knowledge about what interventions work best and under what circumstances. Without this knowledge, Government may continue spending scarce resources on inputs that may not directly contribute to student learning achievement.

Book Synopsis Education Sector Plans and their Implementation in Developing Countries by : Roy Carr-Hill
Download or read book Education Sector Plans and their Implementation in Developing Countries written by Roy Carr-Hill and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-03-09 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the factors affecting the successful implementation of Education Sector Plans in developing countries. It provides a detailed comparison that draws on data from 27 countries to offer careful research conclusions and policy recommendations. Offering a detailed comparison of the schooling situation (e.g. availability of potable water and toilets, provision for the disabled) as well as educational outcomes (both test scores and percentages out-of-school) from the 27 countries using empirical evidence, the book examines the resources that have been invested in different education sectors, investigating the development and success of each plan. The volume uses correlation analysis to compare factors including the availability of government funding, national characteristics, ministerial decisions, influences of country and donor stakeholders, as well as district- and school-level issues. Thorough comparative analysis of the data is then demonstrated, with two measures of achievements to identify which factors can be considered as the most important in order to reach realistic policy and research conclusions. Timely and engaging, this book will be of great interest to researchers, scholars, and postgraduate students in the field of education and international development, comparative education, and international education more broadly.

Download or read book Struggling to Make the Grade: A Review of the Causes and Consequences of the Weak Outcomes of South Africa’s Education System written by Mr.Montfort Mlachila and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2019-03-01 with total page 61 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While South Africa has made significant improvements in basic and tertiary education enrollment, the country still suffers from significant challenges in the quality of educational achievement by almost any international metric. The paper finds that money is clearly not the main issue since the South Africa’s education budget is comparable to OECD countries as a percent of GDP and exceeds that of most peer sub-Saharan African countries in per capita terms. The main explanatory factors are complex and multifaceted, and are associated with insufficient subject knowledge of some teachers, history, race, language, geographic location, and socio-economic status. Low educational achievement contributes to low productivity growth, and high levels of poverty, unemployment, and inequality. Drawing on the literature, the paper sketches some policy considerations to guide the debate on what works and what does not.
