Book Synopsis Primary Industries Facing Global Markets by : Frank Asche
Download or read book Primary Industries Facing Global Markets written by Frank Asche and published by Copenhagen Business School Press DK. This book was released on 2006 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Food producers and other producers of primary products such as forestry increasingly face international competition, and the markets for their products increasingly become globalized. This process can provide promising opportunities to reach new markets and to increase value added by marketing new products. But there are challenges though, as new competitors show up in the domestic markets and access to the retail outlets is denied .Norway is a country with a successful export oriented aquaculture industry and more protected forestry and agricultural sectors. This book explores some of the lessons learned from these sectors in coping with international competition and in exploiting the opportunities that are offered by more open markets. The perspectives adopted come from marketing, economics as well as multidisciplinary social sciences. Each perspective is essential to paint a reliable picture of the opportunities and challenges facing primary industries."

Book Synopsis Climate change and primary industries by :
Download or read book Climate change and primary industries written by and published by Nordic Council of Ministers. This book was released on 2014-08-14 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Climate change is expected to have a profound impact on natural resources, and thus on the primary industries (agriculture, forestry and fisheries) in the Nordic countries. Climate change induces risks but also creates possibilities for new production systems on land and in the ocean. Climatic changes also represent great challenges for policy-making and management regimes. The current knowledge base on natural resources in the Nordic region needs to be expanded to fully address the impacts of climate change. In particular it is important to address the need for improved policies and new policy instruments. The research programme Climate Change Impacts, Adaptation and Mitigation in Nordic Primary Industries is a coordinated set of thematic research networks with the objective to create a Nordic knowledge base on climate change interactions with primary industries in the Nordic region.

Book Synopsis Governance in the Extractive Industries by : Lori Leonard
Download or read book Governance in the Extractive Industries written by Lori Leonard and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-01 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Greater understanding of the forms and consequences of investment and disinvestment in the extractive industries is required as a result of capitalist expansion, recent declines in global commodity prices, and claims that extractive sector projects, especially in the global south, are poverty reduction projects. This book explores emergent forms of governance in mining and extractive industry projects around the world. Chapters examine efforts to govern extractive activities across multiple political scales, through intermediaries, instruments, technologies, discourses, and infrastructures. The contributions analyse how multiple micro-processes of rule reverberate through societies to shape the material conditions of everyday life but also politics, social relations, and subjectivities in extractive economies. Detailed case studies are included from Africa (Chad, Nigeria, Rwanda, and São Tomé and Príncipe), Latin America (Bolivia, Ecuador, and Peru), and the UN Climate Conference.

Book Synopsis Adapting Institutions by : Emily Boyd
Download or read book Adapting Institutions written by Emily Boyd and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-10-27 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global environmental change is occurring at a rate faster than humans have ever experienced. Climate change and the loss of ecosystem services are the two main global environmental crises facing us today. As a result, there is a need for better understanding of the specific and general resilience of networked ecosystems, cities, organisations and institutions to cope with change. In this book, an international team of experts provide cutting-edge insights into building the resilience and adaptive governance of complex social-ecological systems. Through a set of case studies, it focuses on the social science dimension of ecosystem management in the context of global change, in a move to bridge existing gaps between resilience, sustainability and social science. Using empirical examples ranging from local to global levels, views from a variety of disciplines are integrated to provide an essential resource for scholars, policy-makers and students, seeking innovative approaches to governance.
