Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The UK has the fastest growing rate of obesity in Europe with one in five adults classified as being obese. The increasing incidence of obese and overweight children is of equal concern where the rates mirror those of adults. This is a practical guide for GPs practice and community nurses and other health professionals in primary care. Illustrated with case scenarios examples of good practice and practice protocols it describes how to incorporate clinical governance with best practice in preventing and managing obesity and overweight problems. The book provides templates for personal practice and professional development plans that can be used as part of GPs' revalidation portfolios. Reflective exercises at the end of each chapter help to identify learning and service needs and useful data are included on the National Obesity Forum Guidelines together with sources of information and relevant websites. Topics include effective interventions motivation and influence adult and child diets myths and co-existing medical conditions. 'What we desperately need is a reliable evidence-based workshop manual for managing obesity. This book fits the bill. Ruth Chambers and Gill Wakley have long track records for highlighting important issues in general practice. In this book they team up with experts in obesity producing a book which I suspect will develop well-thumbed pages in a short space of time.' Ian Banks in the Foreword

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Health patterns in Southeast Asia have changed profoundly over the past century. In that period, epidemic and chronic diseases, environmental transformations, and international health institutions have created new connections within the region and the increased interdependence of Southeast Asia with China and India. In this volume leading scholars provide a new approach to the history of health in Southeast Asia. Framed by a series of synoptic pieces on the "Landscapes of Health" in Southeast Asia in 1914, 1950, and 2014 the essays interweave local, national, and regional perspectives. They range from studies of long-term processes such as changing epidemics, mortality and aging, and environmental history to detailed accounts of particular episodes: the global cholera epidemic and the hajj, the influenza epidemic of 1918, WWII, and natural disasters. The writers also examine state policy on healthcare and the influence of organizations, from NGOs such as the China Medical Board and the Rockefeller Foundation to grassroots organizations in Thailand, Indonesia, and the Philippines.

Book excerpt: This book analyses the complexity of South and Southeast Asia in international health, taking into account the impact of the geopolitics of the Cold War on the development of public health and development in the regions. In light of the recent health pandemic, which has mobilized experts and governments and led to a securitized approach to global health, this book offers a regional approach to global health histories. The chapters provide case studies ranging from the Cold War to the present time and covering countries from across South and Southeast Asia. Contributors analyse issues related to disease control, an adjunct to wider Cold War geopolitics. They also examine the responses of regional organizations, particularly the ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) and SAARC (South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation), towards COVID-19. Collectively, the book illustrates how narrowly-conceived global health programs implemented by aid agencies failed to account for the local, national or regional contexts. Situating health in South and Southeast Asia in broader global contexts, the book will be a valuable contribution to the History of Medicine and Health and Political Economy of South and Southeast Asia.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book analyses the major problems and issues facing health care decision-makers and practitioners in the planning and implementation of primary health programmes as they pertain to the urban poor. The major concern is the degree to which commonalities transcend the variations in the health programmes of four cities in the region: Bangkok, Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, and Manila. The systematic analysis of current health policies and programmes is based on three approaches: the review of present documents and literature addressed to the health problems of the poor; a survey of health planners and providers, and the community; and case studies on community participation in health care in impoverished urban communities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An illustrated manual designed to help community health workers learn how to use simple drugs to treat common illnesses. Specific to health conditions in Southeast Asian countries, the book uses simple explanatory texts and illustrations to communicate instructions for treating illnesses and knowing when a patient must be referred to a doctor. First issued in 1988 and revised in 1992, the book has been further expanded and updated in line with new knowledge and considerable experience with use of the previous editions. The manual has two parts. The first provides instructions for the correct and appropriate use of 34 essential drugs, ranging from aspirin and paracetamol, through chloroquine and oral re-hydration salts, to penicillin tetracycline eye ointment and several vitamins. Each is described according to a common framework that explains how the drug helps, when it should be used, how it is supplied and given to patients, side effects that may occur, and special precautions to follow. Where appropriate, information on dosage and prescribing schedule by age and weight is set out in tabular form. Part two provides advice for the management or referral of 22 common medical problems moving from anemia, cough, diarrhea, and ear and eye problems through HIV/AIDS, leprosy, malaria and tuberculosis, to poisoning, snakebites, wounds, burns, and shock. Advice on pain relief and on the management of skin and tooth problems is also provided.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the encounter between western and Asian models of public health and medicine in a range of East and Southeast Asian countries over the course of the twentieth century until now. It discusses the transfer of scientific knowledge of medicine and public health approaches from Europe and the United States to several Asian countries — Singapore, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Japan, Taiwan, and China — and local interactions with, and transformations of, these public health models and approaches from the nineteenth century to the 1950s. Taking a critical look at assumptions about the objectiveness of science, the book highlights the use of scientific knowledge for political control, cultural manipulation, social transformation and economic needs. It rigorously and systematically investigates the historical developments of public health concepts, policies, institutions, and how these practices changed from colonial, to post-colonial and into the present day.
