This book was released on 2006-02-09 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Secondary education in Northern Ireland is currently based on a selective system according to academic ability with the use of an 11-plus style test. However, the DfES has announced that academic selection will be ended by autumn 2008, and a consultation document published in December 2005 set out proposals for new post-primary arrangements. Although it was felt to be inappropriate to undertake a full inquiry at this late stage in the decision-making process, the Committee's report contains oral and written evidence submitted by interested parties to the debate. The Committee notes that education is a formerly devolved responsibility and states its hope that there will be scope for detailed supervision of any reforms by a restored Northern Ireland Assembly, as well as by the House of Commons.

Download or read book The Economics of Schooling in a Divided Society written by V. Borooah and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-05-26 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Countries that have suffered ethnic or religious conflict and become segregated societies reflect these divisions in education provision for their children. Northern Ireland is a case study in point where a parallel system of schools offers education in Catholic maintained schools and Protestant (de facto) controlled schools. While school segregation is the most obvious manifestation of Northern Ireland's fractured society, there are more important issues of 'educational inequality' with respect to schools and pupils. This book analyses three issues in some detail: segregation, educational performance and inequality in educational outcomes between schools and between pupils from deprived and affluent family backgrounds. Thus far public policies to tackle these issues have been met with limited success. The authors consider an alternative approach, which they term 'shared education', the aim of which is to improve school performance and, in so doing, to dismantle some of the barriers between maintained and controlled schools.

Book Synopsis Religion in the Primary School by : Peter Hemming
Download or read book Religion in the Primary School written by Peter Hemming and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-02-20 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Religion and its relationship to schooling is an issue that has become more and more topical in recent years. In many countries, developments such as the diversification of state school sectors, concerns about social cohesion between ethnic and religious groups, and debates about national identity and values have raised old and new questions about the role of religion in education. Whilst the significance of this issue has been reflected in renewed interest from the academic community, much of this work has continued to be based around theoretical or pedagogical debates and stances, rather than evidence-based empirical research. This book aims to address this gap by exploring the social and political role of religion in the context of the primary school. Drawing on original ethnographic research with a child-centred orientation, comparisons are drawn between Community and Roman Catholic primary schools situated within a multi-faith urban area in the UK. In doing so, the study explores a number of ways in which religion has the potential to contribute to everyday school life, including through school ethos and values, inter-pupil relations, community cohesion and social identity and difference. At the centre of the analysis are two key sociological debates about the significance of religion in late modern societies. The first is concerned with the place of religion in public life and the influence of secularisation and post-secularism on the relationship between religion and schooling. The second relates to the increasingly multi-faith nature of many national populations and the implications for religious citizenship in educational settings. Religion in the Primary School will be a useful resource for academics, researchers and students as a key addition to existing knowledge in the disciplines of education, sociology and human geography. It will also be of value to both policy-makers and educationalists interested in the role of religion in schools and the implications for the wider community and society in a range of national contexts.

Download or read book Human Rights in Northern Ireland written by Brice Dickson and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2015-02-26 with total page 738 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Handbook is the latest version of a book that was last published in 2003, and has been completely revised to take account of the innumerable legal developments since then. The book contains 26 chapters on topics ranging across the full spectrum of civil, political, social, economic and environmental rights, with particular emphasis on the right not to be discriminated against. It is currently the most comprehensive and practical publication on the state of human rights in Northern Ireland. This is a part of the world where, as well as ongoing issues arising out of the conflict ('emergency laws' are still in place, for example), there are familiar questions concerning the rights of people with poor mental health, the law relating to family and sexual matters, children's rights, education rights, employment rights, housing rights, and social security rights. The contributors to the book are all experts in their field, most of them with years of experience as human rights activists and advisers. The book provides precise information about relevant legislation and case law (on which there are tables) and is fully indexed.
Book Synopsis Teaching Content and Language in the Multilingual Classroom by : Svenja Hammer
Download or read book Teaching Content and Language in the Multilingual Classroom written by Svenja Hammer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-07-03 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together research from six different countries across three continents where teacher educators and policy makers are addressing the under-preparation of content teachers to work effectively with multilingual learners. By highlighting this relatively young field of research at an international level, the book advances the research-based knowledge of the field and promotes international research relationships and partnerships to better support the education of multilingual learners and their teachers. The chapters represent high-quality empirical qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods studies about pre-service and in-service teachers. Comprising four sections, each represents a critical aspect of the equitable teaching of multilingual learners. All the research was conducted in countries that belong to OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) and the PISA (Programme for International Student Assessment) enabling the reader to compare contexts and outcomes. This book will be of particular interest to academics, researchers, and post-graduate students in the fields of language education, teacher education, and education for multilingual learners. It will be of great value to anyone concerned with equity and social justice for multilingual learners whose languages, cultural practices, and resources are often overlooked and/or marginalized in the schools they attend.
Book Synopsis The Psychological Effects of War and Violence on Children by : Lewis A. Leavitt
Download or read book The Psychological Effects of War and Violence on Children written by Lewis A. Leavitt and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2014-01-14 with total page 423 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The outgrowth of a conference planned as a response to the need for researchers and clinicians to develop integrated plans for addressing the psychological trauma of children exposed to violence, this volume's goals are: * to summarize research on the subject with particular emphasis on the Gulf War; * to use this information to formulate an outline of what current knowledge suggests are reasonable approaches to public mental health intervention; and * to develop an agenda for future research necessary for improving clinical efforts in varying international conflicts. A significant collection of diverse perspectives attending to a diversity of cultural and political contexts, the contributors offer many conclusions about important dimensions for analyzing the effects of violence on children. Suggesting informed approaches to public mental health efforts which can be implemented, the work presented here directs attention to the need for interdisciplinary collaboration among researchers and clinicians to better understand the effects of exposure to violence on the psychological well being of children and the optimal modes of remediation on individual, family, and community levels.
