Book excerpt: This exciting new work collects together for the first time the evidence for hoards, buried treasure and other finds of numismatic material from the Americas. An inventory enumerates approximately 900 coin finds, chiefly from the United States, but also from Canada and most other countries in the Americas. This is supplemented with a listing of 150 finds of American coins outside the Americas. Each entry contains the find spot, date of discovery, date of deposit, detailed description of the contents, and a bibliography. The inventory exploits the numismatic, shipwreck, and archaeological literatures, newspapers, and law reports of treasure trove cases more thoroughly than has ever been done before.

Download or read book Pledges of History written by William E. Du Bois and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pledges of History: A Brief Account of the Collection of Coins Belonging to the Mint of the United States, More Particularly of the Antique Specimens The writer will save himself some criticisms, by saying, that he has had neither the skill, nor the zeal, to fulfil this duty in a technical and scientific method. The explana tions which follow are intended not so much for those who are, as those who are not, familiar with ancient coins. And if, after all the pains that have been taken, some errors should appear, it must be remembered that the subject is peculiarly exposed to them. If so trifling a performance were worth the formality of an inscription, the writer would do himself the honour to inscribe it to his superiors in office. William E. DU bois, Assistant Assayer. U 8. Download or read book Coin Hoards written by Ute Wartenberg and published by Spink Books. This book was released on 2002 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This, the ninth volume of Coin Hoards, is again dedicated solely to hoards of Greek coins. It includes hoards from all areas around the Mediterranean from the sixth century BC to the second century AD. Coin Hoards IX, together with the previous volumes in the series, thus forms an essential supplement to the Inventory of Greek Coin Hoards, published in 1973 by Thompson, Morkholm and Kraay. Since the last volume, published eight years ago, the number of Greek coin hoards has increased considerably. Not only does this volume list new hoards, but it also updates and often amends information on hoards already published. Overall, the inventory for this volume consists of 744 entries, with detailed references to find-spot (if known), content, approximate burial date and bibliography. In addition to the inventory, Coin Hoards IX also contains the detailed publication of a number of significant hoards. An important aspect of this volume is the inclusion of 66 plates of photographs illustrating a large proportion of those coins described. This volume will be in indispensable tool for all future research in the field.

Book excerpt: The present monograph is intended to give only a synoptic view of the complex world of numismatic research. An area of knowledge that spans centuries and contains such varying fields as primitive media of exchange, coins, paper money, money substitutes, tokens, medals, and decorations, can hardly be given a detailed history by a single person in a single work. -- Introduction.

Book Synopsis The Islamic Coins by : George Carpenter Miles
Download or read book The Islamic Coins written by George Carpenter Miles and published by . This book was released on 1962 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All but 9 of the 6,449 Islamic coins found at Athenian Agora up to the date when this book was written belong to the Ottoman period. The earliest datable Ottoman coin is from the reign of Mehmed I (1413-21). Most of the coins come from overseas mints such as those of Istanbul, Cairo, Macedonia, Serbia, and Bosnia. Although the name of Athens cannot be read on any coin, the author thinks that many of the crude coppers of the 15th to 16th centuries A.D. were locally struck.
