Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to empirically test the price transmission process in the U.S. Beef Industry. Several arguments have been identified in the literature based on market behaviors supporting the claim that price transmission is asymmetric, including strategic behavior of packers and retailers, adjusting and menu costs, asymmetric information, inventories, and product characteristics. The data set used in this study includes weekly prices from January 1996 to March 2004 at three levels of the beef supply chain: producer, processing, and retail. The relationships between captive supply and price transmission are also investigated. Threshold cointegration approach is used to test the presence of asymmetries in this industry. Empirical results support the hypothesis that prices move asymmetrically in the period from 2001 to 2004 but not for the period from 1996 to 2001 with price increases transmitted faster than price decreases. The study has important implications for the participants in the beef market and for the public policy in the U.S. beef sector, bringing additional empirical evidence to the table.

Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS)* at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dis semination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 39 (thesis year 1994) a total of 13,953 thesis titles from 21 Canadian and 159 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this impor tant annual reference work. While Volume 39 reports theses submitted in 1994, on occasion, certain uni versities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Book excerpt: The US beef, pork, and broiler industry structures have undergone significant changes over the course of the last thirty years. Such changes include increased concentration at the wholesale/packer level as well as increased vertical integration or vertical coordination. With increasing consolidation and changing industry structure, the question of imperfectly competitive markets arises. As a result, it is relevant to examine the effect on price flow direction and symmetry between industry segments within each animal protein industry studied here as there may be important implications for producers and consumers. Previous research has sought to identify if price transmission asymmetries exist in each of the beef, pork, and broiler industries. However, while evidence suggests such asymmetries exist, little work has been performed to attempt to explain why price transmission asymmetries arise. The purpose of this thesis is to test for price transmission asymmetries in each of the beef, pork, and broiler industries from 1986 through 2003. Based on those results, attempts to make comparisons of the industry structure and to draw conclusions as to why price transmission will be undertaken. A five step process including lag length determination, unit root testing, Granger causality testing, price transmission asymmetry testing, and Cumulative Sum (CUSUM) and Cumulative Sum of Squares (CUSUMSQ) stability tests were utilized. Results indicated the presence of price transmission asymmetries in the US beef, pork, and broiler industries. Results were unclear as to the effect that concentration and integration have on the occurrence of price transmission asymmetries. Results suggest that concentration at the retail sector may have as much or more of an influence on price transmission asymmetries as vertical integration or increased concentration at the wholesale level of the US beef, pork, and broiler industries.

Book excerpt: This book argues that the viability of many observed market and non-market interventions in agricultural products worldwide depends considerably on the underlying behaviour of the relevant commodity markets. Many of these policies have had distortive impacts, resulting in much discussion and controversy in the context of the World Trade Organization (WTO) Doha Round of trade negotiations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Economists have proposed several plausible explanations for observed price transmission asymmetries in commodity markets. Unfortunately, the econometric methods commonly used in such studies cannot empirically distinguish pricing behavior under the competing theories. We argue that the theories may be classified by firm responses to high- and low-frequency price cycles and use Engle's band spectrum regression to test the symmetry of high- and low-frequency cycles in weekly pork prices. The findings indicate that changes in wholesale prices are asymmetrically transmitted to retail prices in relatively low-frequency cycles, which does not support search costs and other high-frequency explanations. Conversely, wholesale pork prices asymmetrically adjust to changes in farm prices at all frequencies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published continuously since 1972, Agricultural Product Prices has become the standard textbook and reference work for students in agricultural and applied economics, buyers and sellers of commodities, and policymakers, clearly explaining conceptual and empirical models applicable to agricultural product markets. The new fifth edition uses up-to-date information and models to explain the behavior of agricultural product prices. Topics include price differences over market levels (marketing margins), price differences over space (regionally and internationally) and by quality attributes, and price variability with the passage of time (seasonal and cyclical variations, trends, and random behavior). William G. Tomek and Harry M. Kaiser review and adapt microeconomic principles to the characteristics of agricultural commodity markets and then apply these principles to the various dimensions of price behavior. They also provide an in-depth discussion of prices established for futures contracts and their relationship to cash (spot) market prices; cover the influential roles of price discovery institutions, such as auctions and negotiated contracts, and government policies regulating trade and farms; and discuss the specification, use, and evaluation of empirical models of agricultural prices, placing emphasis on the challenges of doing high-quality, useful analyses and interpreting results.

Book excerpt: The production of meat is an important income source for farmers in Canada and the U.S. From 2000 to 2004, total livestock account for almost 50% of both Canadian and American farmer income. Canada is the second largest pork exporter and it is the seventh top pork importer. The main trading partners of Canada in pork are the U.S., Japan and Mexico. United States has the largest fed-cattle industry in the world, and is the world's largest producer of beef. It is also the second largest exporter of poultry meat. Both United States and Canada play very important roles in the global meat market. Because studies on price relationships could provide insights into marketing efficiency and welfare distribution between consumers and producers, the competitiveness of stages from the farm production sector to the retail sector have received considerable attention from economists. A lot of past studies found common asymmetric price transmission exist among food market without anticipation of the standard economic theory. Though there is not yet a general theoretical explanation for asymmetric price transmission, most studies point to characteristics associated with imperfect competition as reasons for the phenomenon. So the existence of asymmetric price transmission could be an indicator to policy maker in terms of addressing public policy issues. This thesis uses monthly data over the period 1981-2006 to test asymmetric price transmission from farm prices to retail prices for three commodities: beef, pork and chicken in both the Canadian and U.S. meat markets. A comparative analysis of results from the Wolffram-Houck model and a modified error correction model for testing the symmetry of price transmission were examined. The empirical results suggest that the farm to retail price transmission process is characterized by negative asymmetry in the Canadian pork and U.S. broiler sectors, and positive asymmetry in the Canadian beef sector while it is characterized by symmetry in Canadian chicken, U.S. beef and pork sectors.
