This book was released on 1990 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this paper is to present, and to explain the construction of, a set of price indexes relating to international trade in manufactured goods. These include: 1. Indexes of export prices for the U.S., Germany, and Japan, based on their weights, and indexes of competitors' prices for each of those countries based on the sane set of weights; 2. Indexes of domestic prices for the U.S., Germany, and Japan based on export weights; 3. Indexes for developed country exports of manufactures based on weights of developed country exports of manufactures to developing countries and of total developed country exports of manufactures, and indexes for exports of the U.S., Germany, and Japan on the sane sets of weights. The indexes for developed country exports make use of a method for estimating missing prices that takes account not only of contemporaneous price changes in the same country within the sane community groups, but also of price changes for the particular commodity in other countries. Comparisons are made between movements of domestic and export prices and between price indexes based on weights of early and late base years. In addition, an attempt is made to correct the price indexes for changes in the quality of some manufactured goods not usually taken account of in measures of export or import prices.

Book excerpt: This paper describes the methods used by the Research Department to construct the indicators of price competitiveness, or real effective exchange rates, published for 17 industrial countries in International Financial Statistics. The weighting scheme used to construct these indicators is derived from a disaggregated system of demand equations encompassing trade relations in bilateral and third-country markets. Other commonly used trade-weighting schemes are shown to be special cases of the more general and less restrictive competitiveness weights. Differences in the measurement of relative price changes using indices based on other weights are explained by the greater informational content of the competitiveness weights.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leading economists analyze the multiple factors that drive competitiveness among nations in world markets. Competitiveness among nations is often approached as if it were a sports competition: some countries win medals, others lose out. This view of countries fighting it out in the economic arena is especially popular in business circles and among politicians. Economists, however, take a very different approach to international economic relations, arguing that international trade leads not to winners and losers but to win-win situations in which all countries profit. In this volume, leading economists take on the sometimes-derided concept of competitiveness, demonstrating the value of systematic analysis in an area too often dominated by special interest groups who use (and abuse) the concept to advance hidden agendas. The chapters range from broad theoretical views to case studies, examining the multiple factors that drive competitiveness. Contributors consider the conceptual framework underlying the World Economic Forum's approach to competitiveness; differences in per capita GDP between the United States and the European Union; an integrated approach to measuring competitiveness and comparative advantage; divergent trends in price and cost competitiveness in the euro area; methodological issues in constructing competitiveness indicators; taxation and international competitiveness; and a case study of Mexico's competitiveness in world markets in comparison to China's. Knoll, Inmaculada Martinez-Zarzoso, Wim Moesen, Felicitas Nowak-Lehmann, Xavier Sala-i-Martin, Bernd Schnatz, Alain de Serres, Eckhard Siggel, Sebastian Vollmer

This means that competitiveness can be measured either in terms of “tasks” (Bems and Johnson, 2012), or goods, but with goods prices reflecting the cost of tasks embedded in those goods. We show that when measuring competitiveness in goods, the formula used in computing the real effective exchange rates at the IMF (Bayoumi, Lee, and Jayanthi, 2005) needs to be expressed in terms of the price of value added and needs an additional term, which captures a gain or loss in competitiveness of goods due to outsourcing.

Book excerpt: This book integrates the microeconomics of trade with international finance and open economy macroeconomics. The emphasis throughout is on international competition and the limits of trade policy.Economics began with a debate over tariffs. Domestic industries lobby for protection against foreign competitors or export subsidies. Government policy makers dole favors in return for cash and votes. Governments negotiate free trade agreements but disregard them when possible with tariffs, export subsidies, and other policies to influence foreign trade and investment. The forces of international competition, however, eventually overwhelm government policy. This text presents the critical issues of international trade and finance. Trade theory includes partial equilibrium market analysis, neoclassical trade models, constant cost production, factor proportions production, and models of industrial organization. The text integrates concepts from international finance and the basic models of open economy macroeconomics. The presentation uses graphs with numerical examples making the theory easier for students, especially when combined with more general classroom presentation. The text does not assume previous courses in intermediate economics or calculus but develops the theory with simple tools. Numerous questions give students confidence to use the theoretical models and concepts.Over 250 boxed examples illustrate the theory, many with visually descriptive charts and plots. The text is concise in its presentation style. Students enjoy its clear straightforward style and instructors notice the difference on exams.

Book excerpt: International Economics: Global Markets and Competition integrates the microeconomics of international trade with open economy macroeconomics and finance. The theory is comprehensive but presented with intuitive diagrams. The book emphasizes the gains from international competition and the limits of trade policy.Economics began during the Industrial Revolution with a debate over import tariffs. To this day, domestic industries lobby for tariff protection against foreign competition, paying lawmakers for tariffs on imports. Only under special conditions do tariffs lead to economic gains. Domestic importers of materials and industrial products favor free trade, as do export industries since tariffs encourage other countries to retaliate with tariffs of their own.Trade theory includes market analysis and general equilibrium models of the economy. This text integrates the full range of trade theory with exchange rates, balance of payments, international finance, and open economy growth and macroeconomics. The presentation focuses on diagrams and avoids equations and algebra. The theory is presented with numerical examples. The text does not assume intermediate economics, instead developing the theory with thorough explanations. Questions in each section build confidence in applying the theory. Boxed examples illustrate the importance of the theory.Students like the concise and straightforward style. Instructors notice the difference on exams.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past two decades there has been a gradual but fundamental change in the nature of trade protection. Even as international negotiation has succeeded in reducing tariffs to low levels, national governments have resorted to a range of increasingly intricate policies to protect their domestic industries from foreign competition. Direct quantitative restrictions on international trade have become particularly widespread. Such nontariff barriers often have very different effects from tariffs and require careful analysis in their own right. This book presents a systematic overview of the modern theory of trade protection. The material in the book divides naturally into four sections. The first section covers trade restrictions in competitive markets, the second trade restrictions and imperfect competition, the third the political economy of trade protection, and the fourth the theory of policy reform. The presentation makes extensive use of diagrams, with the more difficult mathematics included in six appendixes.
