Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few athletes can match the intensity that wrestlers bring to the mat. As a wrestling official, you're expected to bring that same intensity to your craft. That means knowing not only the rules but also the mechanics for applying them. Officiating Wrestling breaks down the mechanics of officiating the sport to ensure that you're in the right place at the right time to make the right call. Based on officiating mechanics devised and endorsed by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS), Officiating Wrestling is the definitive guide for new and experienced high school wrestling officials. Included are guidelines for what's expected of you as a wrestling official, officiating procedures and responsibilities, pre- and postmatch duties, and equipment and safety regulations. Several chapters are dedicated to mechanics, supported by more than 100 photos and illustrations showing positioning, mechanics, and signals. Real-life cases demonstrate correct rulings, point out common officiating errors and how to avoid them, and challenge you to make the right call in match situations. A glossary of key wrestling terms is also included. Officiating Wrestling is not a rules book--it's a practical resource for implementing correct mechanics as developed and approved by the NFHS. An added bonus is a special section explaining freestyle for both men and women, as well as Greco-Roman, and the differences between these styles and folkstyle wrestling.

Book excerpt: When you watch football games, do you feel as if you know as much—maybe more—than the actual refs? Here's your chance to prove it, with Wayne Stewart’s You’re the Ref. You’re the Ref, first published in 2011 and now newly revised, is divided into five exciting sections covering all three phases of the game—offense, defense, and special teams. From basic holding and pass interference calls to more complicated rules such as roughing the kicker, illegal touching and those governing fumbles, it examines just about every scenario that could unfold on a football field. Most of the situations in this book come from real games—many that diehard fans will be sure to remember—so don your zebra stripes, grab your whistle, and take your position in the offensive backfield. After all, you're the ref! Skyhorse Publishing, as well as our Sports Publishing imprint, are proud to publish a broad range of books for readers interested in sports—books about baseball, pro football, college football, pro and college basketball, hockey, or soccer, we have a book about your sport or your team. Whether you are a New York Yankees fan or hail from Red Sox nation; whether you are a die-hard Green Bay Packers or Dallas Cowboys fan; whether you root for the Kentucky Wildcats, Louisville Cardinals, UCLA Bruins, or Kansas Jayhawks; whether you route for the Boston Bruins, Toronto Maple Leafs, Montreal Canadiens, or Los Angeles Kings; we have a book for you. While not every title we publish becomes a New York Times bestseller or a national bestseller, we are committed to publishing books on subjects that are sometimes overlooked by other publishers and to authors whose work might not otherwise find a home.

The book covers every key component of the official’s role, including: Training and career development Fitness and physical preparation Visual processing Judgement and decision-making Communication and game management Psychological demands and skills Using technology Performance evaluation Researching and studying officials in sport Top-level officials or officiating managers contribute in the ‘Official’s Call’ sections, reflecting on their experiences in real in-game situations across a wide range of international sports, and on how a better understanding of science and technique can help improve professional practice. No other book has attempted to combine leading edge contemporary sport science with the realities of match officiating in this way, and therefore this book is vital reading for any advanced student of sport science, sport coaching or sport development, or any practising official or sports administrator looking to raise their professional standards.

Book excerpt: The rivalry between the U.S. and European teams was at an all-time high even before the first swing of the 2016 Ryder Cup. The Americans had lost an astounding six out of the last seven matches. With the U.S. team out for revenge and the Europeans determined to keep the Cup out of American hands, the showdown took place in Hazeltine, Minnesota—just days after the death of golf legend Arnold Palmer. It became one of the most raucous and heated face-offs in the Cup’s history. Award-winning author John Feinstein takes readers behind the scenes, providing an inside view of the dramatic stories as they unfolded, including the assembly of veteran Phil Mickelson’s superb team, the intense match between European superstar Rory McIlroy and American Patrick Reed that almost came to blows, and the return of Tiger Woods. Throughout, Feinstein vividly illustrates why the Ryder Cup has become golf’s most intense and emotional event.

Referees and sports officials usually spend more time in the field or in the arena than athletes themselves and are often just as instrumental to the outcome—and enjoyment—of a game. Pursuing a career in sports officiating requires a love of the sport, an eye for detail, and patience, among a host of other qualities. This exciting volume details the keys to ensuring fairness, safety, and sportsmanship on the field and the skills required to become a successful sports official.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Accuracy is not debatable." This book is a "call for commitment" by Officials to a proper performance while making consistent, accurate rulings. My motivation for this book comes from the fact that I have an absolute genuine concern about THE GAME, and I have for a long time. My concern comes from my belief that officiating basketball is not as difficult as so many among us make it out to be. "Much of what I was taught" during the first half of my career had no rules support, was vague, came with poor advice, and were even philosophical. Those clinicians and trainers who trained me were terrific individuals with a noble effort to teach me the "right way." However, there sure seemed to be many "right ways." Their training was also filled with too much about the "tricks of the trade" and not enough about "the trade." I was never instructed to trust the rules. Over the last four decades, we have become conditioned to accept less and less in the name of style, philosophy, and appearance. We must get all Officials committed to enforcing the rules, and they can't do that if they don't know them. This book is "long overdue" because it is my attempt to let the basketball "world" hear the words of Peter Webb, my mentor and the most knowledgeable person on the planet on the topic of basketball officiating. We know you'll enjoy and benefit from reading this "officiating textbook."
