Book excerpt: Volume limited missiles require a particularly exacting form of component integration. In the integral rocket ramjet (IRR) system the propellant, for the solid rocket booster, is cast directly into the same volume that is used for the ramjet combustor. This study is directed to a better understanding of the pressure losses in dump combustors. Attendant to this study was an effort to simplify methods of predicting compressible flow losses. Application of the incompressible pressure loss factors and equations to compressible problems can lead to serious errors at Mach numbers above 0.3. During this study an equation was derived to predict compressible pressure losses. This equation expresses the pressure loss as a function of the Mach number and a pressure loss factor which is independent of Mach number. Subsequently it was found that the compressible pressure loss factor, called N sub D the dissipation number, was numerically equal to the incompressible pressure loss factor, K sub t, for any given fluid system. The incompressible parameter is basically a function of geometry and Reynolds number and there exists a wealth of data relating to it. Two basic dump combustor designs were selected for testing because of their possible use in missile propulsion. The first was a coaxial circular inlet model, the second a dual side-mounted rectangular inlet model. The measured dissipation numbers were compared to the predicted incompressible parameters and found to be encouragingly similar. The results of this study show, on a preliminary basis, that it may be possible to use the existing incompressible data to predict compressible pressure losses.
Book Synopsis Investigation of Dump Combustors with Flame Holders by : Frank D. Stull
Download or read book Investigation of Dump Combustors with Flame Holders written by Frank D. Stull and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental investigation was conducted on the addition of flameholders to the inlet duct of a 5 inch D dump combustor in an attempt to reduce combustor length. Basic flameholder configurations, percentage blockage, leading edge bluntness, and trailing edge contours were varied to characterize the significant features of flameholders. A parametric study was then conducted around the two best flameholder configurations in which combustor length-to-diameter ratio (L/D), characteristic length, inlet temperature, and chamber pressure were varied. Combustion efficiency and combustor pressure losses were determined from each of these runs and compared to previous results for the basic dump combustor. Results are presented which show a marked difference in performance with small changes in trailing edge contour. Increases of up to 30 points in combustion efficiency were obtained when the best flameholder was added to the basic dump combustor with a L/D = 3.

Download or read book Dump Combustor Parametric Investigation written by Frank D. Stull and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 63 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A series of scale model coaxial dump combustors from 2 inch to 5 inch D were tested on a thrust stand with JP-4 fuel over a wide range of ramjet test conditions. Baseline conditions were selected to approximate 'pressure scaling criteria' in which chamber pressure times combustor diameter remains constant. JP-4 fuel was injected perpendicular to the airstream from eight plane tube injectors. Fuel/air ratio, chamber pressure and nozzle throat diameter were varied for each size chamber. Lean blow-out limit, combustion efficiency, combustor pressure drop, and combustion instability characteristics were obtained for each test point.
Book Synopsis Large Scale Low Pressure Dump Combustor Performance by : Roger R. Craig
Download or read book Large Scale Low Pressure Dump Combustor Performance written by Roger R. Craig and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 65 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental investigation has been conducted extending previous results of small scale dump combustors to larger combustors (8 to 12-in D) tested at lower pressures. A parametric study was then conducted around the 12-in baseline configuration, with and without flameholders, in which combustor length-to-diameter (L/D), Combustor Length-to-step height (L/h), characteristic length (L*), fuel injector type, inlet temperature and chamber pressure were varied. Lean blowout limit, combustion efficiency, and combustor pressure drop were obtained from these runs using JP-4 fuel and compared to previous small scale data. A limited number of additional tests were conducted with Shelldyne-H fuel. Results show that good combustion efficiencies can be achieved with relatively low blockage flameholders resulting in higher overall performance for the larger combustors. (Author).

This book was released on 2016-11-26 with total page 929 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) Technologies discusses this innovative power generation technology that combines modern coal gasification technology with both gas turbine and steam turbine power generation, an important emerging technology which has the potential to significantly improve the efficiencies and emissions of coal power plants. The advantages of this technology over conventional pulverized coal power plants include fuel flexibility, greater efficiencies, and very low pollutant emissions. The book reviews the current status and future developments of key technologies involved in IGCC plants and how they can be integrated to maximize efficiency and reduce the cost of electricity generation in a carbon-constrained world. The first part of this book introduces the principles of IGCC systems and the fuel types for use in IGCC systems. The second part covers syngas production within IGCC systems. The third part looks at syngas cleaning, the separation of CO2 and hydrogen enrichment, with final sections describing the gas turbine combined cycle and presenting several case studies of existing IGCC plants. Download or read book Combustion written by Irvin Glassman and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-12-02 with total page 775 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout its previous four editions, Combustion has made a very complex subject both enjoyable and understandable to its student readers and a pleasure for instructors to teach. With its clearly articulated physical and chemical processes of flame combustion and smooth, logical transitions to engineering applications, this new edition continues that tradition. Greatly expanded end-of-chapter problem sets and new areas of combustion engineering applications make it even easier for students to grasp the significance of combustion to a wide range of engineering practice, from transportation to energy generation to environmental impacts. Combustion engineering is the study of rapid energy and mass transfer usually through the common physical phenomena of flame oxidation. It covers the physics and chemistry of this process and the engineering applications—including power generation in internal combustion automobile engines and gas turbine engines. Renewed concerns about energy efficiency and fuel costs, along with continued concerns over toxic and particulate emissions, make this a crucial area of engineering. New chapter on new combustion concepts and technologies, including discussion on nanotechnology as related to combustion, as well as microgravity combustion, microcombustion, and catalytic combustion—all interrelated and discussed by considering scaling issues (e.g., length and time scales) New information on sensitivity analysis of reaction mechanisms and generation and application of reduced mechanisms Expanded coverage of turbulent reactive flows to better illustrate real-world applications Important new sections on stabilization of diffusion flames—for the first time, the concept of triple flames will be introduced and discussed in the context of diffusion flame stabilization
