Book Synopsis Democracy in the European Union by : Erik Oddvar Eriksen
Download or read book Democracy in the European Union written by Erik Oddvar Eriksen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-09-11 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The European Union is widely held to suffer from a democratic deficit, and this raises a wider question: can democracy at all be applied to decision-making bodies beyond the nation state? Today, the EU is a highly complex entity undergoing profound changes. This book asks how the type of cooperation that the EU is based on can be explained; what are the integrative forces in the EU and how can integration at a supra-national level come about? The key thinkers represented in this volume stress that in order to understand integration beyond the nation state, we need new explanatory categories associated with deliberation because a supranational entity as the EU posesses far weaker and less well-developed means of coercion - bargaining resources - than do states. The most appropriate term to denote this is the notion of 'deliberative supranationalism'. This pioneering work, headed by major writers such as Habermas, Schlesinger and Bellamy, brings a new perspective to this key issue in contemporary politics and political theory.

Book Synopsis Broadcasting in the Modernist Era by : Matthew Feldman
Download or read book Broadcasting in the Modernist Era written by Matthew Feldman and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2014-05-22 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The era of literary modernism coincided with a dramatic expansion of broadcast media throughout Europe, which challenged avant-garde writers with new modes of writing and provided them with a global audience for their work. Historicizing these developments and drawing on new sources for research – including the BBC archives and other important collections - Broadcasting in the Modernist Era explores the ways in which canonical writers engaged with the new media of radio and television. Considering the interlinked areas of broadcasting 'culture' and politics' in this period, the book engages the radio writing and broadcasts of such writers as Virginia Woolf, W. B. Yeats, Ezra Pound, T. S. Eliot, James Joyce, George Orwell, E. M. Forster, J. B. Priestley, Dorothy L. Sayers, David Jones and Jean-Paul Sartre. With chapters by leading international scholars, the volume's empirical-based approach aims to open up new avenues for understandings of radiogenic writing in the mass-media age.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 21st century is already seeing fundamental changes in broadcasting. No longer are audiences limited to watching or listening to television and radio at the times and places dictated by the broadcasters, or on radio or TV 'sets'. Broadcasting in the 21st Century demonstrates how 'traditional' television and radio is being both challenged and supported by technological developments, including convergence and social media. Drawing on interviews with industry personnel and featuring case studies and research from many countries, including that from the UK, USA, China, India and South Africa, Richard Rudin explains not only the significance of these changes but also how many of the functions and pleasures of broadcasting that were established in the 20th century are being enhanced by new media. Opening with a substantial account of how broadcasting developed in the 20th century, the author goes on to explore how new media forms are changing audiences' pleasures, expectations and demands. Rudin's illuminating study highlights the changing relationship between audiences and broadcast output to examine a range of subjects including: - The impact of citizens' journalism - Political coverage - International TV formats and news output - The continuing appeal of radio as a distinct medium - Debates over bias, truth and trust in broadcasting and broadcasters In addition, Broadcasting in the 21st Century addresses a range of broadcast forms and genres including the coverage of general elections, Reality TV and pirate radio.

Book excerpt: Turning adversity on its head he embarked upon a career in broadcasting that began in South Africa with the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC), before returning to Cardiff in September 1987 to anchor BBC Wales’ portfolio of prime time sports programs. By the mid-1990s Alan had gone freelance and, following the end of apartheid, was reunited with the SABC to cover South Africa’s return to world sport with the 1994 cricket tour to England and the 1995 Rugby World Cup. He also began what would become a long association with Singapore-based ESPN Star Sports (ESS) by commentating on the 1996 Indian cricket tour of England. By 1997 Alan had joined the ESS commentary team in India for the One Day International series between India and Sri Lanka where he was part of the commentary team, with Ravi Shastri, Sunil Gavaskar, Navjot Singh Sidhu, Harsha Bhogle and Geoffrey Boycott, otherwise known as A Few Good Men. In February 2000 he re-located to Singapore to work for ESS and for almost 16 years enjoyed broadcasting cricket, golf, rugby, tennis and a host of other sports across the Indian sub-continent. A return home to Wales in 2015 has reignited Alan’s love for rugby but as you’ll read in Easier Said Than Done, his love of sport means the shape or size of the ball is not an issue.
