Après épandage, le transfert de l'atrazine dans le sol est déterminé par des phénomènes de rétention (adsorption-désorption), et immobilisation sous forme de résidus, de dégradation, et par la dynamique des eaux. La dégradation de l'atrazine dans le sol donne principalement lieu à une hydroxylation ou à des désalkylations. Les résidus non extractibles formeront une source de contamination ultérieure. Le lessivage du composé mère entraînera les polluants vers les eaux profondes, provoquant une contamination éventuelle des nappes phréatiques.En milieu aqueux, l'atrazine subit principalement une hydrolyse ou, plus faiblement, des désalkylations. L'atrazine et ses dérivés peuvent se révéler dangereux pour la faune par leurs effets indirects sur la croissance des algues.L'atrazine est un polluant général et permanent des eaux, qu'elles soient superficielles ou profondes. On l'isole également régulièrement dans l'eau de distribution. Sa faible biodégradation dans la nappe phréatique en fait un polluant à long terme.L'atrazine pénètre au sein des plantes par un phénomène de simple diffusion, avant de subir trois formes de dégradation : hydroxylation racinaire puis désalkylation pour le maïs, aboutissant à la formation d'acide cyanurique puis de dioxyde de carbone, d'eau et d'ammoniac ; formation d'un glutathion-conjugué pour le sorgho, et désalkylations sur l'une puis l'autre chaîne pour les plantes sensibles, pour aboutir au DACT. Les résidus non métabolisés seront autant d'intrants dans la filière animale.
