Su objetivo es incorporar temáticas básicas y actuales que sirvan al alumnado de la residencia en el posgrado, así como a cualquier persona interesada en el ámbito que, de manera sencilla, pueda adquirir conocimiento en torno a la educación especial desde la perspectiva psicológica de la discapacidad, teniendo en cuenta los fundamentos teóricos, jurídicos, metodológicos y de evaluación relacionados con las personas que se encuentran en condiciones desaventajadas biológica, social y culturalmente. La obra se compone de seis capítulos, los cuales se articulan de manera histórica, partiendo de las bases teóricas que dieron origen a la educación especial desde un enfoque de la Psicología del desarrollo, hasta las nociones actuales de la temática, donde se retoman el modelo social de los principios universales de los derechos humanos, posicionando a las personas en condiciones de discapacidad como sujetos de derechos y garantías. Se parte, en el primer capítulo, de los aspectos teórico-metodológicos de la Psicología del desarrollo desde el enfoque analítico-conductual, colocando a los individuos con requerimientos especiales como personas con retardo en el desarrollo, dando pauta al análisis de su evaluación e intervención. En el capítulo dos se destaca la importancia de la figura de los padres, madres y demás miembros de la familia como cuidadores principales de los menores de seis años de edad que presentan desventaja en el desarrollo, resaltando el papel determinante en la intervención temprana de estos niños y niñas para el incremento de su calidad de vida. Por otro lado, el capítulo tres ejemplifica las aportaciones de la perspectiva psicológica en la discapacidad mediante la exposición del estudio del trastorno por déficit de atención e hiperactividad (TDAH), caracterizado por el trabajo multidisciplinario y de intervención psicoeducativa y enfatizando el papel de la Psicología en la evaluación, diagnóstico y tratamiento de este tipo de discapacidad. En el capítulo cuatro se aborda el tema de la sexualidad en las personas con discapacidad (PcD) desde una perspectiva actual de la discapacidad, con un enfoque en derechos sexuales y reproductivos, y desde una visión positiva de la sexualidad. Se describen diversos estudios recientes en el campo y se plantea una serie de recomendaciones para diseñar e impartir programas orientados a la promoción de la educación sexual en este colectivo. El tema de la inclusión educativa en el contexto nacional se aborda en el capítulo cinco. La autora describe el concepto de la inclusión educativa y su relevancia para reducir las brechas de desigualdad social, y presenta un análisis histórico de las reformas educativas que se han hecho en el país para garantizar el acceso educativo de toda la población mexicana. En el capítulo seis la autora desarrolla un abordaje histórico de los modelos bajo los cuales se ha entendido la discapacidad y el trato que las personas con esta condición han recibido en los contextos sociales a través del tiempo. Describe el marco legal y jurídico que ofrece soporte a la perspectiva actual de la discapacidad con enfoque en los derechos humanos y describe las pautas de actuación del profesional de la Psicología ante una nueva visión social que reconoce cabalmente los derechos de estas personas. El abordaje de las temáticas que conforman el libro permitirá al lector 1) tener un entendimiento teórico y metodológico del desarrollo psicológico, 2) la importancia de hacer intervención temprana para identificar y reducir el riesgo de que se produzcan daños en pequeños con desventajas de índole biológica, social y cultural; 3) adquirir dominio en habilidades de evaluación e intervención en personas con TDAH, y 4) tener una perspectiva actual del abordaje de la sexualidad en PcD, la educación inclusiva y los derechos humanos que deben garantizarse en esta población.

Positive behavior support (PBS) is defined as an approach for dealing with problem behavior that focuses on the remediation of deficient contexts (such as environmental conditions and/or behavioral repertoires) that by functional assessment are documented to be the source of the problem. The research published on PBS between 1985 and 1996 (n=107 articles) was reviewed with respect to four categories of variables: demographics, assessment practices, intervention strategies, and outcomes. Results indicated that: (1) PBS is widely applicable to people with serious problem behavior; (2) the field is growing rapidly overall, but especially in the use of assessment and in interventions that focus on correcting environmental deficiencies; (3) using stringent criteria of success, PBS is effective in reducing problem behavior in one-half to two-thirds of cases; (4) success rates nearly double when intervention is based on a prior functional assessment; and (5) consumer needs that emphasize comprehensive lifestyle support, long-term change, practicality and relevance, and direct support for consumers themselves are inadequately addressed by the research base.
