Book Synopsis Crustal Structure Studies Utilizing Earthquake Sequences by :
Download or read book Crustal Structure Studies Utilizing Earthquake Sequences written by and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The original goal was to use the Dall City earthquake sequence of Feb-Mar '85 to investigate the crustal structure of north-central Alaska. The scope was later modified to include studies of some earthquakes just north of the Alaska Range, the Gold King earthquakes, and later still to include data gathered from chemical explosions detonated by USGS as part of their Trans- Alaska Crustal Transect (TACT) program. The work divided roughly into Dall City events, Gold King events, Yukon Flats Experiment, permanent network/explosion data, and Barter Island - Fairbanks refraction. The models used in this study were applied to most of Alaska, and thus large differences were expected. In general the models for the areas north of Fairbanks are reasonably similar which is consistent with the fact that relocations of events using these different models don't produce any clear preference; and south is expectedly much more complex, given young accreted terranes with an underthrusting Pacific plate.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The polarity of the P wave first motion in the main shock yields a single well determined nodal plane with strike N66 degrees E, dip 85 degrees to the southeast. The focal mechanism of the earthquakes related to the main shock bear a remarkable similarity to one another and to the main shock. In all but three cases there is a single steeply dipping nodal plane of P. For earthquakes in the Kodiak Island region this plane has the same orientation as that of the main shock. For earthquakes to the east of Prince William Sound the near vertical nodal plane P shows a systematic change in orientation corresponding to the change in trend of the tectonic features. For all of these shocks excellent S wave data permit the determination of the second nodal plane, indeterminant from the P wave data. It is found to have a dip of about 10 degrees to the northwest or north. By inference, the second nodal plane of the main shock has the same orientation. (Author).

Book Synopsis Fundamental and Applied Research in Seismology in Alaska by : Eduard Berg
Download or read book Fundamental and Applied Research in Seismology in Alaska written by Eduard Berg and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A catalogue of earthquakes using all available sources was compiled, including earthquakes up to summer 1965. Energy release of the Aleutian Chain, Alaska and the southeast was studied and mapped. About one half of the total energy was released along the coastal region of the Alaska mainland. There was also significant activity along a branch reaching into the Fairbanks area including three shocks with magnitudes in the 7 1/2 range since 1904. Fault plane solutions from the main and a series of aftershocks of the March 28, 1964 earthquake indicated that the predominant compressional force system was more or less directed perpendicular to the range. There was strong indication that the March 28, 1964 Alaskan earthquake and the major aftershocks of (U.S.C. and G.S.) magnitude> or = 5.5 (except for the first 24 hours) and located on the continental shelf were possibly triggered by low ocean tide loads. The observation was consistent with the force system derived from fault plane solutions and the land uplift and subsidence which occurred during the main shock. The pressure variation during an ocean tide cycle on the bottom of the shelf area was considered significant in carrying the last part of the stress-strain curves of the rock into the 'strain softening' region towards failure. During the 'Longshot' experiment, not only clear compressional P waves but also outstandingly clear PcP waves have been observed in the distance range 1800 to 2600 km. (Author).
