Book excerpt: We report two preliminary measurements of the time dependence of B{sub d}°- B{sub d}° mixing using novel techniques with a sample of 150,000 hadronic Z{sup O} decays collected by the SLD experiment at the SLC. B decay vertices are reconstructed inclusively with a topological technique and the B hadron flavor at production is determined by exploiting the large left-right forward-backward asymmetry of Z{sup O} → b {bar b} decays in combination with a jet charge technique. Two methods are used to tag the B flavor at decay. The first uses the charge of kaons attached to the B decay vertex and identified with the Cherenkov Ring Imaging Detector. The second measurement is based on the construction of a charge dipole of the topological vertices to separate the B{sub d}{sup O}/B{sub d}° decays by exploiting the B → D cascade charge structure. The measurement of the oscillation frequency yields [Delta]m{sub d} = 0.58 ± 0.07(stat)±0.08(syst) ps−1 and 0.56 ± 0.08(stat)±0.04(syst) ps−1 for the kaon and dipole tags respectively.

A simultaneous measurement of the ''right sign production fraction'' of kaons from B[sub d] decays has also been made. The initial state B hadron flavor was determined using the large forward-backward asymmetry provided by the polarized electron beam of the SLC in combination with a jet charge technique and information from the opposite hemisphere. From a sample of 400,000 Z[sup 0] events collected by the SLD experiment at SLC from 1996 to 1998, the kaon right sign production fraction has been measured to be 0.797[+-] 0.022 and the mass difference between the two B[sub d] eigenstates has been measured to be[Delta]m[sub d]= 0.503[+-] 0.028[+-] 0.020 ps[sup -1].

From their preliminary analysis the authors find a mass difference between the two B{sub d}° mass eigenstates of, [Delta]m{sub d} = 0.452 ± 0.074(stat) ± 0.049(syst) ps−1.

Experimental evidence of mixing of the neutral kaon was obtained in 1956, followed in 1987 by the evidence of Bd mixing. In 1974, A. Pais and S. B. Treiman firstly introduced the idea of charm mixing and CP violation. Even though many searches were conducted over time, it was clear that the small scale at which both amplitude and frequency of the oscillation took place made any possible observation challenging. In 2007, both the BABAR and Belle experiments announced the first evidence of mixing in the charm sector. The analyses concerned the study of a two body decay of the D0 meson. Few months later, BABAR presented the analysis of the decay D0 → K+?-?0 . This is the main topic of this thesis.
