Book excerpt: The Early Life History (ELH) of marine fishes in Fishing Area 31, which includes the western central North Atlantic, Caribbean Sea, and the Gulf of Mexico, has remained incomplete over the years. This certainly wasn't because of any lack of interest, but rather a lack of a comprehensive merging of studies that would provide a broad understandi

This area is bounded by 35° north latitude on the north, 50° west longitude on the east, the Equator on the south, and the continental margins on the west. It is basically the area defined by FAO as the Western central Atlantic Fishing Area 31 which includes the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea. The region is tropical and subtropical with important fishing areas and a high diversity of species. The area is also characterized by a large number of coral reefs"--Introduction, paragraph 1

Download or read book Marine Fishes of South-East Asia written by Gerry Allen and published by Tuttle Publishing. This book was released on 1999-06-10 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This beautifully illustrated marine fish guide encompasses the singularly diverse and rich oceans from southeast Asia to Australia Marine Fishes of Southeast Asia contains nearly 2,000 hand-painted illustrations featuring 1,635 individual species. The paintings were completed over a 3-year period and are primarily based on photographs or color transparencies of either live fishes taken underwater or freshly caught specimens. In many cases preserved specimens at the Western Australian Museum have been consulted to ensure accuracy of detail and proportions. The end result is a colorful and highly comprehensive guide to the sea fishes of northern Australia and the adjacent Southeast Asian region.

Book Synopsis Sensory Processing in Aquatic Environments by : Shaun P. Collin
Download or read book Sensory Processing in Aquatic Environments written by Shaun P. Collin and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2003-02-06 with total page 471 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research on aquatic sensory processing -- the way animals see, hear, smell, taste, feel, and electrically and magnetically sense their environment -- has advanced a great deal over the last fifteen years. This book discusses the most recent and important themes that have emerged from research in the areas of neurobiology and sensory physiology. The layout of the book is arranged by function or task, rather than by a description of each sensory modality in turn. Part I, "Navigation and Communication," chiefly examines long-range sensory tasks, while "Finding Food and Other Localized Sources" (Part II) scales down to concentrate on more close-range processing. Part III, "Coevolution of Signal and Sense," describes the strong linkages between the physical parameters of the aquatic realm and the sensory receptors. Organisms living in light-limited environments have received a lot of recent attention, so Part IV gives special focus to visual adaptations in the deep sea. The final Part V, "Central Coordination and Evolution of Sensory Inputs," describes aspects of how signals are processed and filtered in the central nervous system. This book will be essential reading for all undergraduate and graduate students interested in aquatic biological sciences as well as for any researcher in sensory systems.

Book Synopsis A guide to the eggs and larvae of 100 common Western Mediterranean Sea bony fish species by : Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations
Download or read book A guide to the eggs and larvae of 100 common Western Mediterranean Sea bony fish species written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2018-11-16 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This guide presents the egg and larval descriptions of 100 species of fishes belonging to 55 families, which are most likely to be present in plankton samples collected in the continental shelf and oceanic waters of the Western Mediterranean Sea. The guide is structured in two parts. The first introductory part describes the different applications of ichthyoplankton studies in fisheries research, the main sampling strategies, methods and gears, the early life history of fishes and how to identify them. A brief historical account of ichthyoplankton identification studies in the Mediterranean Sea is also provided. The second part of the guide contains the identification sheets of the species. Each species sheet includes the following information: illustration of the adult fish and information on its habitat and spawning season; description of the main features useful towards identifying the egg, yolk sac and larval stage of each fish species; illustrations and (when available) photos of the different life stages.

Book excerpt: This identification guide includes 552 species of mesopelagic fishes (i.e. those fishes residing primarily between 200-1000 m depth during daytime) that are known to occur in the central and south east Atlantic Ocean. Fully illustrated dichotomous keys to all taxa are provided. Species are treated in detail, with accounts including the scientific name, FAO common name in English (where available), other useful characters, size, a distribution map, and one or more illustrations. To facilitate even further the identification of the taxa, captions and arrows are added to help users quickly locate their key morphological features. The guide is intended for both specialists, and nonspecialists who have a working knowledge of ichthyology.
Book Synopsis Guide to the Identification of Genera of the Fish Order Ophidiiformes with a Tentative Classification of the Order by : Daniel M. Cohen
Download or read book Guide to the Identification of Genera of the Fish Order Ophidiiformes with a Tentative Classification of the Order written by Daniel M. Cohen and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Objectives of the paper are to provide dichotomous keys for the identification of ophidiiform genera. For each genus a brief account is presented including synonymy, a short diagnosis, a list of species, distribution, references, when possible comments on relationships, and for most an outline drawing. The genera are organized into an hierarchical classification which divides them into two suborders, Ophidioidei, which contains oviparous fishes with a high anterior nostril, and Bythitoidei which contains viviparous fishes with a low anterior nostril. Ophidioidei is divided into two families. Carapidae, with a vexillifer larval stage, has two subfamilies: Pyramodontinae with two genera and Carapinae with four. Ophidiidae has four subfamilies: Brotulinae, with a single genus; Brotulotaeniinae (new family) with a single genus; Ophidiinae, the cusk eels, with eight genera in two tribes; and Neobythitinae, with 38 genera (Epetriodus and Spottobrotula are new genera based on new species from the Indian Ocean) in two tribes. Bythitoidei contains two families, one of which, Aphyonidae has five genera characterized by many neotenic features. Bythitidae is divided into the free-tailed Brosmophycinae with 13 genera in two tribes and Bythitinae with 15 genera.
