Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until recently, the complexity of the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) system has hindered its commercial success. Stringent regulations of diesel emissions has lead to advancements in this technology, therefore mainstreaming the use of DPFs in light- and heavy-duty diesel filtration applications. This book covers the latest and most important research in DPF systems, focusing mainly on the advancements of the years 2002-2006. Editor Timothy V. Johnson selected the top 29 SAE papers covering the most significant research in this technology.

Download or read book Characterizing Ash and Substrate Properties in Sintered Metal Fiber Diesel Particulate Filters Using an Advanced Diagnostic Approach written by Paul John Folino and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In order to comply with strict air emissions regulations, applicable diesel engines are required to have an installed after-treatment device. A diesel particulate filter (DPF) is one of these aftertreatment devices, and it is used to capture hazardous particulate matter (PM) from the engine exhaust stream. Over the lifetime of the DPF, incombustible materials like ash are deposited within the DPF. The presence of ash inhibits the exhaust flow and thus causes flow restriction throughout the filter. This increase in the flow restriction due to ash accumulation has an adverse effect on engine performance, primarily a reduction in fuel economy. While the global effects of ash on engine performance are well researched and understood, the fundamental mechanisms of ash phenomenology in the DPF require further understanding. Current experimental data mainly addresses how ash porosity and permeability influence pressure drop across the filter, but an investigation of these properties reveals how other key sub parameters, such as ash particle size and distribution and filter oxidation level, significantly contribute to an increase in pressure drop as well. The focus of this work is to understand the behavior of ash particles in a sintered metal fiber (SMF) filter substrate and recognize the resultant effect on DPF pressure drop using an advanced diagnostic approach. Much of the work relies on the use of sophisticated imaging and software tools to quantify properties such as particle size, particle distribution, filter porosity, and permeability among others. Additionally, this research introduces and demonstrates the capabilities of these cutting-edge tools and how they can best be utilized to provide filter performance data to qualify existing and future experimental data for SMF or cordierite filters. An analysis of the data reveals a statistically significant dependence between pressure drop and the aforementioned sub-parameters.

Book Synopsis The Advanced Petroleum-Based Fuels Program Evaluation of EC-Diesel and Diesel Particulate Filters in Southern California Vehicle Fleets by :
Download or read book The Advanced Petroleum-Based Fuels Program Evaluation of EC-Diesel and Diesel Particulate Filters in Southern California Vehicle Fleets written by and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The EC-Diesel and particulate filter combination greatly reduced the particulate matter, hydrocarbon, and carbon monoxide emissions of all vehicles tested in the program to date. Particulate matter reductions greater than 98% were achieved. For several vehicles tested, the PM and HC emissions were less than background levels. Based on preliminary statistical analysis, there is 95%+ confidence that EC-D and particulate filters reduced emissions from three different types of vehicles. A fuel consumption penalty was not detectable using the current test procedures and chassis dynamometer laboratory. Test vehicles equipped with the CRT and DPX particulate filters and fueled with EC-Diesel fuel have operated reliably during the program start-up period.

Book Synopsis Chemical Analysis of Diesel Particulate Matter and an Evaluation of Artifact Formation by : FS-C Lee
Download or read book Chemical Analysis of Diesel Particulate Matter and an Evaluation of Artifact Formation written by FS-C Lee and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Methods for the sampling and analysis of diesel particulates have been evaluated. A number of different solvents were utilized for the extraction of diesel particulates. Benzo(a)pyrene (BaP) standards spiked on glass-fiber or quartz-fiber filters were found to be oxidized during the sampling of ambient air or exhaust gases. Such degradation was largely reduced by using filters with more inert surfaces, such as Teflon membranes. The results suggest that sample degradation due to gas-BaP reactions requires the presence of a reactive or catalytic medium, such as the glass-fiber filter surface. Such reactions can be minimized with the proper choice of a more inert filter surface such as Teflon. Oxidation of BaP was also observed in diesel extracts during analytical procedures or prolonged storage for several weeks in the dark. The implication of the sampling and analytical artifact problem is a question not only of analytical recovery but also of whether significant biologically active conversion products are produced. Analytical methods to study the extraction efficiency for BaP from diesel particulates are presented. High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS), and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) are being investigated for the identification and analysis of these species and preliminary results indicate the presence of a number of oxygenated polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) compounds, which potentially could be produced by oxidation during sampling and analysis.
