Book excerpt: Excerpt from Catalogue Raisonne of the Prehistoric Antiquities in the Indian Museum at Calcutta Most of the prehistoric antiquities of the Indian Museum, which are described in this catalogue, were collected by officers of the Geological Survey of India between 30 and 40 years ago; some specimens have since been added by members of the Archaeological Survey of India; and a few have been obtained through the generosity of private individuals. The compilation of this catalogue was undertaken at the wish of Sir John Marshall, Director-General of Archaeology in India, in whose charge the collections now rest, and pari passu with its preparation the implements themselves have been systematically arranged and labelled in the museum, after having lain for many years in disorder and neglect. The arrangement I have adopted is primarily chronological and secondarily geographical. Chronologically, I have divided the collections into the following four groups, which are now universally recognised as important stages or eras of culture in the early development of the human race. 1. - The Palaeolithic or Rude Stone Age. In the present state of prehistoric archaeological science in India it is impossible to subdivide the Pleistocene period into shorter stages, as has been accomplished with such success in Europe and, until detailed investigations are carried out in caves or in the river deposits of this country, it is unlikely that any further advance will be made. The industrial remains left by the racers which inhabited India in the earlier days of human history are strictly comparable with similar types found in most other countries of the world, but whether the periods to which they are supposed to belong really synchronise with the stages recognised in Europe, is a matter which cannot be decided at the juncture. Indian palaeoliths are massive rock fragments, in the vast majority of cases composed of quartzite, chipped into cleaving, smiting and perhaps digging implements, exactly resembling the early stone age implements found in Northern and Southern Africa, Central America, and in Europe. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores conceptions of Indian architecture and how the historical buildings of the subcontinent have been conceived and described. Investigating the design philosophies of architects and styles of analysis by architectural historians, the book explores how systems of design and ideas about aesthetics have governed both the construction of buildings in India and their subsequent interpretation. How did the political directives of the British colonial period shape the manner in which pioneer archaeologists wrote the histories of India's buildings? How might such accounts conflict with indigenous ones, or with historical aesthetics? How might paintings of buildings by British and Indian artists suggest different ways of understanding their subjects? In what ways must we revise our conceptions of space and time to understand the narrative art which adorns India's most ancient monuments? These are among the questions addressed by the contributors to the volume.

This book draws on a vast array of texts, inscriptions, archaeology, archival sources and art to delve into themes such as the history of regions and religions, archaeologists and the modern histories of ancient sites, the interface between political ideas and practice, violence and resistance, and the interactions between the Indian subcontinent and the wider world. It highlights recent approaches and challenges in reconstructing South Asia's early history, and in doing so, brings out the exciting complexities of ancient India. Authoritative and incisive, this revised Penguin edition-with two new chapters-is essential reading for students and scholars of ancient Indian history and for all those interested in India's past.

Book excerpt: Although the modern nation state of Bangladesh has long been known to possess rich archaeological sources--especially of the historical periods--there is a dearth of publications analyzing their scope and detailed pattern. The present volume, based on the researches of Bangladeshi and other scholars, as well as on the author's own fieldwork and a first-hand study of the material, offers a coherent and connected account of the available archaeological knowledge of that country. This book contains, among other things, a detailed aboriginal study of the prehistoric and early historic situation in Bangladesh, and points out the wealth and diversity of explored and excavated sites of the later periods.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book undertakes a comparative study of the history and development of legislative and administrative systems in operation today for the protection of archaeological monuments. With the exception of Scandinavia and the United Kingdom, no country adopted a positive policy towards the protection and conservation of its archaeological and historical heritage until the twentieth century. Moreover, it was not until the middle of that century, under the threat of wholesale devastation from extensive schemes for social and economic development, that the accelerating disappearance of the sites and monuments of Antiquity became the object of intensive study and legislation. Since then systems of cultural resource management have developed throughout the world. A range of countries (from Europe, America, Asia and Africa) representing a diversity of political and ideological systems - capitalist, socialist and ex-colonial - have been selected as being broadly representative of the variety of these systems. The case studies have been written by distinguished archaeologists and provide critical evaluations of the objectives and shortcomings of these systems.
