Building African Futures presents ten essays by young architects, urban planners and activists that offer innovative solutions to big challenges, including housing shortages, informality, legal roadblocks and misunderstandings between architects, policy-makers and local people. Their ideas are grounded yet transformative. They reflect the authors’ direct experiences across a range of African cities, but the issues they speak to resonate across the continent. This collection is a rich resource for urban activists, built environment professionals, local governments and a general audience with an interest in African urbanism. The manifestoes were presented in September 2022 during a symposium in Accra titled “Reimagining African Futures through Transformative Urbanism and Architecture”, organised by the African State Architecture (ASA) project, SOAS, University of London; the African Futures Institute (AFI) and the Institute for African Studies (IAS), University of Ghana. Book Synopsis Modern Architecture in Africa by : Antoni S. Folkers
Download or read book Modern Architecture in Africa written by Antoni S. Folkers and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-07-22 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers unique insights into modern African architecture, influenced by modern European architecture, and at the same time a natural successor to existing site-specific and traditional architecture. It brings together the worlds of traditional site-specific architecture with the Modernist Project in Africa, which to date have only been considered in isolation. The book covers the four architectural disciplines: urban planning, building technology, building physics, and conservation. It includes an introduction with a historical outline and an analysis and comparison of a number of projects in various countries in Africa. On the basis of examples drawn from practice, the author documents and describes the hybrid architectural forms that have emerged from the confrontation and fusion with (pre)modern Western architecture and urban planning, and in so doing he also narrates the history of African architecture.

The continent is a place battered by war and political upheaval but still standing tall with a struggling economy. Africa is many things to many people, to the people who fought for her independence; it’s a continent demanding its rightful voice in the world affairs, to the peanut farmer of Mali and business woman of Zimbabwe, its home. To them and others like them, the deep joy of knowing the history of their people sharing communal life and family values is balanced by bitter sorrows of hard times the continent has endured. African cultures are ancient, yet alive, and show great evidence of the adaptation to the world around them. Africa is a continent with a vast resource of fertile soils, diverse wildlife, and lots of natural resources. It houses some of humanity’s oldest forms of organized government and can trace its history back centuries. This book will take you on a trip to the various nations of Africa in order to familiarize yourself with their unique cultures as well as their history.

Book Synopsis So You Want to Dig a Well in Africa? by : Jeff Palmer
Download or read book So You Want to Dig a Well in Africa? written by Jeff Palmer and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2020-10-14 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Typical missions projects involve dozens of people in identical T-shirts getting on an airplane to go somewhere and help a needy community. But do those projects actually help people in the long run? Does this work create long-term systemic change in individuals and the community? And does the work lead to intentionally sharing Christ? In other words, is our mission work based on good missions strategy that brings about sustainable change and kingdom impact for communities, or is our approach focused only on creating a positive experience for everyone involved? So You Want to Dig a Well in Africa? highlights ten common myths people and organizations believe about missions. Exploring the ways in which American churches take on missions, author Jeff Palmer • highlights pitfalls of equating mission trips with ministry projects; • offers valuable techniques to avoid unintentional but harmful practices that stem from a poor community development model; • presents tools for designing, implementing, and evaluating strong, mercy-oriented mission strategies; and • discusses key elements for evaluating mission programs: participation, sustainability, and transformation. Offering a resource for those seeking to work for the good of people but also for the glory of God, this guide highlights faulty models used for mercy-oriented missions and give a framework for creating sustainable change in people and communities.
Book Synopsis Housing Market Dynamics in Africa by : El-hadj M. Bah
Download or read book Housing Market Dynamics in Africa written by El-hadj M. Bah and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-03-12 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book utilizes new data to thoroughly analyze the main factors currently shaping the African housing market. Some of these factors include the supply and demand for housing finance, land tenure security issues, construction cost conundrum, infrastructure provision, and low-cost housing alternatives. Through detailed analysis, the authors investigate the political economy surrounding the continent’s housing market and the constraints that behind-the-scenes policy makers need to address in their attempts to provide affordable housing for the majority in need. With Africa’s urban population growing rapidly, this study highlights how broad demographic shifts and rapid urbanization are placing enormous pressure on the limited infrastructure in many cities and stretching the economic and social fabric of municipalities to their breaking point. But beyond providing a snapshot of the present conditions of the African housing market, the book offers recommendations and actionable measures for policy makers and other stakeholders on how best to provide affordable housing and alleviate Africa’s housing deficit. This work will be of particular interest to practitioners, non-governmental organizations, private sector actors, students and researchers of economic policy, international development, and urban development.
Book Synopsis Empire of the Air by : Jenifer Van Vleck
Download or read book Empire of the Air written by Jenifer Van Vleck and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2013-11-01 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jenifer Van Vleck's fascinating history reveals the central role commercial aviation played in the United States' ascent to global preeminence in the twentieth century. As U.S. military and economic influence grew, the federal government partnered with the aviation industry to deliver American power across the globe and to sell the idea of the "American Century" to the public at home and abroad. The airplane promised to extend the frontiers of the United States "to infinity," as Pan American World Airways president Juan Trippe said. As it accelerated the global circulation of U.S. capital, consumer goods, technologies, weapons, popular culture, and expertise, few places remained distant from Wall Street and Washington. Aviation promised to secure a new type of empire--an empire of the air instead of the land, which emphasized access to markets rather than the conquest of territory and made the entire world America's sphere of influence. By the late 1960s, however, foreign airlines and governments were challenging America's control of global airways, and the domestic aviation industry hit turbulent times. Just as the history of commercial aviation helps to explain the ascendance of American power, its subsequent challenges reflect the limits and contradictions of the American Century.

Download or read book Mass Housing written by Miles Glendinning and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2021-03-25 with total page 689 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shortlisted for the Alice Davis Hitchcock Medallion 2021 (The Society of Architectural Historians of Great Britain) "It will become the standard work on the subject." Literary Review This major work provides the first comprehensive history of one of modernism's most defining and controversial architectural legacies: the 20th-century drive to provide 'homes for the people'. Vast programmes of mass housing – high-rise, low-rise, state-funded, and built in the modernist style – became a truly global phenomenon, leaving a legacy which has suffered waves of disillusionment in the West but which is now seeing a dramatic, 21st-century renaissance in the booming, crowded cities of East Asia. Providing a global approach to the history of Modernist mass-housing production, this authoritative study combines architectural history with the broader social, political, cultural aspects of mass housing – particularly the 'mass' politics of power and state-building throughout the 20th century. Exploring the relationship between built form, ideology, and political intervention, it shows how mass housing not only reflected the transnational ideals of the Modernist project, but also became a central legitimizing pillar of nation-states worldwide. In a compelling narrative which likens the spread of mass housing to a 'Hundred Years War' of successive campaigns and retreats, it traces the history around the globe from Europe via the USA, Soviet Union and a network of international outposts, to its ultimate, optimistic resurgence in China and the East – where it asks: Are we facing a new dawn for mass housing, or another 'great housing failure' in the making?
