Book excerpt: African American (AA) adolescents are currently at disproportionate risk for HIV infection, with AA youth ages 13 through 19 accounting for 56% of all new HIV cases, a rate of infection 8 times that of Caucasian youth. Prevention researchers have targeted this population with a sense of urgency, resulting in numerous studies that have investigated predictors of sexual risk behaviors among AA youth. The results of these studies have yielded findings in a number of domains including environmental, individual, and interpersonal factors. However, reported findings are often inconsistent and synthesis of findings in this area is lagging. The present study synthesized data from 79 studies examining 11 domains of variables in association with 3 outcome variables: Unprotected Sex, Condom Use, and Multiple Sex partners. Intentions and partner variables were most predictive of sexual risk behaviors in this population. Further research is needed to investigate the role of partner-related influences in predicting sexual risk behaviors.

Book excerpt: African American adolescents are faced with pressures from their own ethnic group as well as from the majority culture as they navigate through the stormy waters of identity development. Adolescence is a time of experimentation, and flirting with substance use is an option adolescents deal with as a part of this time. Based on literature from epidemiology, ethnic identity, and acculturation research, it is proposed that the level of involvement and interest in the majority culture as well as own ethnic culture are important predictors of substance use in this population. Three constructs compose the identification idea: identification with own racial group, identification with other racial groups, and separation attitudes. The conceptualizations are based on the work of John Berry. Structural Equation Modeling was used to test a model of relations between exogenous variables (racial discrimination, segregation, SES, social activity level and academic orientation), identification and separation attitudes, negative affect, and health risk cognitions as described by the prototype/willingness theory. Cross-sectional data from 723African American participants (mean age=12.3) were taken from the Family and Community Health Study (FACHS) to test the model. Results indicate that identification with own ethnic group and with other ethnic groups are important protective factors in relation to health risk cognitions, which in turn are related to health risk behavior. The relation between identification with own racial group and health risk cognitions is mediated by negative affect, whereas identification with other racial groups has a direct (not mediated) effect. Images of the prototypical substance user mediate the effect of identification in both cases. Both types of identification promote negative user images and less willingness and intent to engage in substance use; separation attitude is an important covariate. Academic orientation is an important part of the model, predicting all three identification variables. It is concluded that identification strategies of African American adolescents and the relation of these strategies to academic orientation are important considerations for the development of intervention, especially since most intervention efforts take place within the context of public schools.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Risk-taking behavior (RTB) among juveniles has grown steadily since the first juvenile justice system was established. This study examines the relationship between future expectations of racial minority adolescents and their RTB across seven years. The role of multiracial identity and the malleability of this identity in RTBs were further examined, as were differences across sexes. Data from Waves 1 through 3 of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (N = 1770; 796 males and 974 females) was utilized for this study. All participants indicated a minority race at Wave 1. Slightly more than 40% of the males and almost 60% of the females changed their race from Wave 1 to Wave 3. Latent growth curve modeling results not only suggest that although adolescents took fewer risk initially, adolescents who had significantly higher future expectations actually increased their RTB over time as compared to those with lower future expectations. While previous research has indicated that higher future expectations are associated with lower risk-taking behavior, the findings of this study suggest that higher future expectations is associated with an increase in risk-taking behavior over time. Shame and guilt and their ties to reflected appraisal and identity formation may be one way to understand this phenomenon. The higher one's future expectations, likely the more positive their reflected appraisals and lower the anticipated shame. The more secure on is in their identity, the less likely that anticipated shame or guilt might influence their actions, as these responses would be seen as exceptions rather than indicative of their identity. Examination across sexes found that the relationship between future expectations and RTB attenuated among females to the point of insignificance but remained significant for males over time. As for moderators, results suggest that the inverse relationship between future expectations and initial reports of RTB is weaker among multiracial adolescents who identify as one race. Further, racial identity malleability moderated the initial relationship between future expectations and RTB in males but not females. Among racial minority males, racial identity malleability reverses the positive effect of future expectations on RTB. Last, racial identity malleability moderated the relationship between future expectations and the trend in RTBs in females but not males. It appears that racial minority adolescent females do not only have a less stable racial identity but the more flexible their racial identity, the more RTB despite having high future expectations. Clinical implications and further research are discussed.

Book excerpt: Research has shown that during this time of development, adolescents may encounter obstacles in navigating sexuality, identity, academics, and friendships that can exacerbate risk-taking behavior (WHO, 2018; WHO, 2011). Adolescents tend to participate in higher levels of risky behaviors (id est, unprotected sex, substance use, and violence) compared to individuals over the age of 21 (Duell and others, 2018; Reniers and others, 2016). School and parental connectedness are significant protective factors for health, school success, and overall well-being (Hay and others, 2016). Adolescents who feel a greater connection to their home and school communities are less likely to face damaging health outcomes (id est, sexually transmitted infections [STI], drug abuse, death) connected to substance use, sexual risk, violence, and mental health (CDC, 2019a). Therefor aim of the current study was to examine whether school and parental connectedness in a preadolescent population delays onset of risk behaviors (e.g., initiation of sexual intercourse, initiation of drug, alcohol and tobacco use). The research was conducted using previously collected data from 1115 African American pre-adolescents (age 9-12 at study entry) and their primary caregivers, who were followed longitudinally for three years as part of the Parents Matter! project. The study was conducted using structural equational modeling (SEM) and path analysis to answer the research following questions: (1) Is there an association between school connectedness and risk-taking behavior (id est, risky sexual behavior and alcohol and drug use) among African American youth?, (2) Is there an association between parental connectedness and risk-taking behavior (id est, risky sexual behavior and alcohol and drug use) among African American youth?, (3)Does school connectedness moderate the relationship between parental connectedness and risk-taking behaviors for African American preadolescents?, (4) Does gender moderate the relationship between parental connectedness and risk-taking behaviors for African American preadolescents?, and (5) Does SES moderate the relationship between parental connectedness and risk-taking behaviors for African American preadolescents? Each research question was examined from two perspectives: the perspective of the parent and the perspective of the preadolescent. Results from analyses indicated a significant association between school connectedness and risk-taking behaviors for both the preadolescent and parent models, although the correlation was in opposite directions (id est, negative correlation for preadolescents, positive correlations for parents) (Research Question 1). The results also revealed a significant correlation between parental connectedness and risk-taking behavior (Research Question 2). Gender moderated a significant correlation between parental connectedness and risk-taking behavior according to parent reports, however the preadolescent model only indicated a significant correlation for females as it pertains to parental connectedness and risk-taking behavior in African American preadolescents (Research Question 4). SES moderated a significant relationship between parental connectedness and child sexual behavior in all three SES categories in the parent model and in the low SES category in the preadolescent model. The preadolescent model also a revealed significant correlation between parental connectedness and substance use in the Low and Moderate SES categories (Research Question5). Results for both parent and preadolescent models yielded no significant correlation when school connectedness moderated the relationship between parental connectedness and risk-taking behavior (Research Question 3). The results of this study offer significant additions to the field of psychology, particularly within the treatment and study of risk-taking behavior reduction in African American preadolescents. Limitations regarding sampling, measures, and data analyses were taken into consideration when analyzing the results and implications of the study. Implications associated with theory, future research, and clinical practice were taken into consideration.

Sometimes their perception of their own risks, even of survival to adulthood, is larger than the reality; in other cases, they underestimate the risks of particular actions or behaviors. It is possible, indeed likely, that some adolescents engage in risky behaviors because of a perception of invulnerabilityâ€"the current conventional wisdom of adults' views of adolescent behavior. Others, however, take risks because they feel vulnerable to a point approaching hopelessness. In either case, these perceptions can prompt adolescents to make poor decisions that can put them at risk and leave them vulnerable to physical or psychological harm that may have a negative impact on their long-term health and viability. A small planning group was formed to develop a workshop on reconceptualizing adolescent risk and vulnerability. With funding from Carnegie Corporation of New York, the Workshop on Adolescent Risk and Vulnerability: Setting Priorities took place on March 13, 2001, in Washington, DC. The workshop's goal was to put into perspective the total burden of vulnerability that adolescents face, taking advantage of the growing societal concern for adolescents, the need to set priorities for meeting adolescents' needs, and the opportunity to apply decision-making perspectives to this critical area. This report summarizes the workshop.
