Sometimes their perception of their own risks, even of survival to adulthood, is larger than the reality; in other cases, they underestimate the risks of particular actions or behaviors. It is possible, indeed likely, that some adolescents engage in risky behaviors because of a perception of invulnerabilityâ€"the current conventional wisdom of adults' views of adolescent behavior. Others, however, take risks because they feel vulnerable to a point approaching hopelessness. In either case, these perceptions can prompt adolescents to make poor decisions that can put them at risk and leave them vulnerable to physical or psychological harm that may have a negative impact on their long-term health and viability. A small planning group was formed to develop a workshop on reconceptualizing adolescent risk and vulnerability. With funding from Carnegie Corporation of New York, the Workshop on Adolescent Risk and Vulnerability: Setting Priorities took place on March 13, 2001, in Washington, DC. The workshop's goal was to put into perspective the total burden of vulnerability that adolescents face, taking advantage of the growing societal concern for adolescents, the need to set priorities for meeting adolescents' needs, and the opportunity to apply decision-making perspectives to this critical area. This report summarizes the workshop.

Book excerpt: Abstract: The present study investigated the effectiveness of adolescents' risky decision-making model in relation to their perceptions of four main prospective parental deterrents: finding-out (detection), punishment, severity of punishment, and expression of disappointment, and examined the dimensionality of a newly developed instrument of high-risk behavior. Participants were 360 high school adolescents in a large Midwestern public school. The results supported that three components of the model (i.e., finding out, punishment, and disappointment) were significant predictors of adolescent risky decision-making. The study also examined a newly developed measure of high-risk behavior (Risky Behavior Scale). Initial psychometric properties of the scale were established via an item analysis, Cronbach's alpha, and a principal components analysis. Three dimensions emerged from the analysis: problem behaviors, delinquency, and defiance to parental authority. Results related to the scale's dimensionality are discussed in terms of implications to future research and measurement of the construct.

Book excerpt: African American (AA) adolescents are currently at disproportionate risk for HIV infection, with AA youth ages 13 through 19 accounting for 56% of all new HIV cases, a rate of infection 8 times that of Caucasian youth. Prevention researchers have targeted this population with a sense of urgency, resulting in numerous studies that have investigated predictors of sexual risk behaviors among AA youth. The results of these studies have yielded findings in a number of domains including environmental, individual, and interpersonal factors. However, reported findings are often inconsistent and synthesis of findings in this area is lagging. The present study synthesized data from 79 studies examining 11 domains of variables in association with 3 outcome variables: Unprotected Sex, Condom Use, and Multiple Sex partners. Intentions and partner variables were most predictive of sexual risk behaviors in this population. Further research is needed to investigate the role of partner-related influences in predicting sexual risk behaviors.

Although many studies have examined these outcomes, few have examined the impact of maltreatment prospectively to determine what early responses might predict later functioning. The current study examined risk behaviors in a cohort of adolescents who were removed from their homes as a result of maltreatment approximately five years ago. Shortly after their removal, the youth and their caretakers were interviewed about the youth's emotional, social, and behavioral functioning. The current study re-interviewed those youth to determine their involvement in four domains of risk behavior: sexual, delinquent, substance use, and self-destructive behaviors. Information collected during the initial interview (Time 1) was used to explore whether specific vulnerability and protective factors predicted differential engagement in risk behaviors. The majority of the eligible subjects were located and interviewed (75%, n = 149). The interviewed group of subjects did not differ from the non-interviewed group in any systematic ways. Descriptive analyses suggested that this cohort of youth had engaged in a substantial number of risk behaviors which were related to experiencing a host of negative consequences. The four domains of risk behavior loaded on a single factor that accounted for 65% of the variance, supporting the concept of a unitary construct of risk behavior. Bivariate analyses suggested that risk behaviors were positively correlated (r range:.17-.66) with negative outcomes (e.g. pregnancies, arrests, residential treatment). The analyses also suggested that the Time 1 variables were related to current engagement in risk behaviors. For example, higher levels of externalizing behaviors and posttraumatic stress, and lower levels of parental support were related to increased involvement in risk behaviors in adolescence (r range:.16-.52). Hierarchical regression models demonstrated that a significant proportion of the variance in risk behaviors was accounted for by the overall models (R2 range:.10-.36), with the predictor variables significant over and above the control variables (R2 change range:.05-.25). These findings have implications for the "specificity" versus "generality" of risk behaviors debate. The limitations of the study, as well as the implications of these findings for intervention efforts, were discussed
